23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time/ September 6, 2009
Worship is still at 9:30 a.m. ? back in the sanctuary.
New Picture (33).bmp
?He who sings prays twice.?
Attributed to Augustine of Hippo (354-430)
Scripture: Psalm 147 & Colossians 3: 12-17
Paul urged the church in Colossae to worship ?with gratitude in your hearts
sing [ing] psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God.?
This Sunday, at the close of summer, we will turn to the psalms of the
Hebrew people for our praise and at the center of the service, in lieu of
the sermon, we will proclaim the gospel through the singing of hymns. So,
come with your favorite hymns in mind and in good voice.
See you in worship this Sunday,
Ken Kovacs

September 13: KickOff Sunday ? No adult education class
September 20: Are We There Yet?
Why do we offer adult education classes? Why should adults attend ?church
school? too? It might be clich?, but the Christian life really is a journey,
it?s an adventure. Christians are people on the way, led by the Spirit,
becoming the people God calls us to be. No one has arrived. We all need
lifelong learning and help so that we don?t lose our way. We also learn from
one another, sharing tales of what we?re seeing and experiencing along the
way. This is a good place to begin our journey for the 2009-2010 season. Led
by Ken Kovacs.
September 27: How to Talk about Our Faith
The PCUSA designates this week as Evangelism Sunday. If there?s a word that
stirs fear and trepidation into the souls of Presbyterians, it?s the word
?evangelism.? Presbyterians, generally speaking, know what they believe and
why. But many of us are reluctant to talk about our faith, especially with
strangers. Why is this? What can we do to change this? Didn?t Jesus say, ?Go
and tell?? Tell what? We?ll talk about our experiences and our fears and
explore ways to overcome some of our anxieties. Led by Ken Kovacs.

The Thursday Morning Bible Study will return on October 1. We?ll gather at
10:30 a.m. in the library. Led by Ken Kovacs, we?ll explore in-depth the
book of Matthew. Stay tuned.
The 2009 Per Capita is $30.41 for each member. To date, we have received
$3,509.00. Per Capita is an assessment paid to the Presbyterian Church (USA)
based on church membership. The CPC assessment is $14,931.31. Per Capita is
for administrative expenses of the Presbytery of Baltimore, the Synod of the
Mid-Atlantic, and the General Assembly.

involved in worship at CPC!

Opportunities Abound in World Mission!
We are so excited to be able to offer you several opportunities during
October to experience the empowerment of World Mission within your
congregations. As you know, the Presbytery of Baltimore has three formal
mission partnerships with presbyteries in Cuba, Guatemala and on the Pine
Ridge Native American Reservation. Presbyterians involved in these missions
come together to serve Christ through a mutual commitment to forge long-term
relationships that give powerful testimony to the world about the good work
done in Christ?s name.
Michael Parker
On Tuesday evening, October 6th the Rev. Michael Parker will be the guest
of the Mission Committee of the Presbytery of Baltimore. Mike spent 10
years in Rwanda and has returned to the United states as the Coordinator of
International Evangelism for PC(USA) World Mission in Louisville. We are
very privileged to host Mike as he travels through Maryland. In that light,
the Mission Committee has decided to extend an invitation to anyone who
wishes to join us for Mike?s presentation. We will offer a simple soup &
salad dinner at 7pm when Mike will begin his discussion. Please let me know
if you plan to attend.
Head-and-shoulders shot of Tricia Lloyd-Sidle.
The Rev. Tricia Lloyd-Sidle, Mission Co-Worker for Cuba and The Caribbean,
will be the guest of the Presbytery of Baltimore for the week of October 9th
-16th. While we have Tricia quite booked for the evenings she is with us,
the daytime still remains open. Do you have a Senior Group, Youth Group or
others who meet during the day? Let me know if you would like Tricia to
speak with your group of 2 to 200!
Finally, Mission Celebration 2009 of the World Mission Division of PC(USA)
takes place in Cincinnati from October 22nd -24th. So far eight people from
the Presbytery of Baltimore will be attending!! The Mission Committee is
offering financial assistance for those who wish to attend. Workshops and
classes on interpreting world mission in your congregations are offered ?
please visit www.pcusa.org/worldmission to view the event or call me for
more information.
Profound personal transformation can take place in the interaction between
Christians throughout the world. Events such as these can act as a catalyst
for your members to live out their Christian faith in new and meaningful
ways. Join us.
Grace and peace.

If not, please plan to bring your giving up to date September 20. Our financial gifts and pledges are tangible signs of our faith and our commitment to God's work in this church.
One way to avoid falling behind with your pledged or unpledged giving is to sign up for Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) through Hubbard Press, which is affiliated with the PC(USA). At no charge to you, the amount of your monthly giving will automatically transfer from your account to the church's account, on the 20th of each month. Forms (with instructions) are in the rack at the back of the sanctuary. Thank you, Peter Green, Chair, Stewardship Committee

Those interested in ringing in the handbell choir are also encouraged to contact Greg or a current member for more information. Handbells rehearse Thursday evenings from 6:30-7:30 in the sanctuary.
Consider attending a rehearsal to see what we do. It's a great way to be involved in worship at CPC!

Rev. Bower?s painting at Harundale
Rev. Robert S. Bower, Pastor Emeritus of Harundale Presbyterian Church, Dead
The Rev. Robert S. Bower, Pastor Emeritus of Harundale Presbyterian Church
in Glen Burnie, was hospitalized for a stroke and died Friday at Glen Burnie
Rehabilitation Center. He marked his 89th birthday the day before his
death.
Rev. Bower was a member of the Presbytery of Baltimore for 56 years, most of
which he spent shepherding Harundale?s congregation. He guided the
congregation through substantial growth, financial struggle and tragic
building fires to its evolution as a strong community church ? which
numbered nearly a thousand members at the height of his tenure.
Active in the denomination and the community, Rev. Bower was a member of the
Presbytery?s Nominating and Human Relations committees; served on the boards
of directors for the Anne Arundel Community College and YMCA; and, was
influential in both interdenominational worship efforts and many youth
ministry programs. He retired in 1985, after 32 years of service in the
pulpit ? all at Harundale.
Rev. Bower was born and raised in Nile, Ohio. During WWII, he interrupted
his education to enlist in the US Army Air Force and served as a first
lieutenant combat pilot with the 9th Air Force. He flew B-25 planes and
other fast attack bombers on 37 missions over France and Germany during the
European Theater Operation.
After the war, Rev. Bower moved to Pennsylvania and continued his education
at Westminster College. He was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1949
and, subsequently, received a Bachelor of Divinity Degree from Princeton
Theological Seminary. Later, while serving as an associate pastor, Rev.
Bower met and married the former Marilyn Marie Michael. The Bowers recently
celebrated 56 years of marriage. In the last hours of his life, Rev. Bowers
was moved from a local hospital to Glen Burnie Nursing Center so that he
could be with his wife, who receives convalescent care at the center.
In addition to his wife, Rev. Bower?s survivors include three sons, Robert
Bower of Shawnee, PA; Jonathan Bower of Gen Burnie MD; David Bower of
Chesapeake, VA; a sister, Elizabeth Linsley of Miami, FL; 11 grandchildren
and a host of family and friends. A memorial service will be scheduled
later. Condolences may be sent to the family home at 408 Phelps Avenue,
Glen Burnie, MD 21060

?For Christ is a person to be trusted, not a principal to be tested.
The Church is a movement, not a meeting house.
The faith is an experience, not an exposition.
Christians are explorers, not mapmakers.?
George MacLeod (1895-1991),
Founder of the Iona Community, Iona, Scotland
Scripture: Proverbs 3: 13-18 & Luke 2: 41-52
Sermon: Explorers, Not Mapmakers
This Sunday?s sermon will build upon Dorothy Boulton?s marvelous sermon from
last week and will be closely tied to the adult education hour topic. It
might be clich?, but the Christian life really is a journey, an adventure.
There is never a point of arrival (at least in this life). Not only are we
people of the Way, we are also people walking with the Way, on the way to
the life Christ dreams for us, individually and together. The Christian
life is to be dynamic, always on the move, filled with curiosity and
questions, continuously searching for wisdom, for deeper insight and
meaning, never satisfied with the surface or with things as they are or with
known territory. We are not mapmakers, but explorers.
See you in worship,
Ken Kovacs

Adult Education
Growing in God?s Grace: Join us on Sunday mornings, 9:00?10:00 a.m. in the
library. Child care is always provided.
September 27: How to Talk about Our Faith. The PCUSA designates this week as
Evangelism Sunday. If there?s a word that stirs fear and trepidation into
the souls of Presbyterians, it?s the word ?evangelism.? Presbyterians,
generally speaking, know what they believe and why. But many of us are
reluctant to talk about our faith, especially with strangers. Why is this?
What can we do to change this? Didn?t Jesus say, ?Go and tell?? Tell what?
We?ll talk about our experiences and our fears and explore ways to overcome
some of our anxieties. Led by Ken Kovacs.
An optional lunch at a nearby restaurant is also planned. All adults,
including visitors and friends, are invited to join us. (Also suitable for
senior highs.)
If a ride is needed, let us know at signup. The group will leave from
the church large parking lot at 9:30. Contact Bill Quigley (410-465 8077 or
wwquig at aol.com) with any questions or comments, or
to sign up.

Today is Stewardship Catch-up Sunday: As you transition to fall and review
your personal financial matters, please consider your pledged or unpledged
giving to CPC for 2009 among them. CPC depends on regular giving to meet its
commitments and its budget. If you are up to date with your pledged or
unpledged giving, thank you. If not, please plan to bring your giving up to
date. Our financial gifts and pledges are tangible signs of our faith and
our commitment to God?s work in this church.
One way to avoid falling behind with your pledged or unpledged
giving is to sign up for Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) through Hubbard
Press, which is affiliated with the PC(USA). At no charge to you, the
amount of your monthly giving will automatically transfer from your account
to the church?s account, on the 20th of each month. Simply complete the form
found in the rack at the back of the sanctuary, attach a voided check, and
return it to the church office marked to the attention of the Stewardship
Committee. Thank

The Legalities of
CHURCH WEBSITES
Church websites are a great tool for promoting the mission and the
ministries of a church, and for sharing information with members. But few
webmasters are aware of legal and tax issues ? some of which can result in
unexpected liability ? associated with the use of church websites. One of
the greatest concerns is copyright infringement, which is more readily
discovered when images, text, music and links are used without permission on
a website. Here are some key issues:
Images: Staff pictures taken with a digital camera may not pose a problem;
but using someone else?s photo or artwork on your website without permission
is a potential case for copyright infringement. Notice of copyright is not
always necessary; and the absence of a copyright notice doesn?t mean the
image is within public domain. An image need only be an original and in a
tangible form to be protected by copyright. When in doubt, contact the
person who took or created the image and obtain permission to use it ?
perhaps, for a small fee.
Text: The Fair Use Doctrine & Copyright Law authorizes the use of copyright
materials depending on the nature and amount of material copied. However,
there is no question that copying an entire article, poem, news photo design
or significant excerpt from a book will be beyond the protection of the
doctrine.
Music: The fact that your church has purchased music does not necessarily
make it legal for you to post it to your website. You may have downloaded a
digital music file for a few dollars, but before you post it be sure to read
the terms and conditions of the sale. In most cases the fine print will
strictly prevent posting the music to a website.
Links: Links bear a relationship to the information superhighway comparable
to the relationship that roadway signs have to the roads. Church websites
should not contain links to other websites without first obtaining
permission from the provider of the other site. And, never create links
that do not clearly reveal the source of the linked information.
While not required for any work created on or after March 1, 1989, it is
good practice to insert a copyright notice on any material that members of a
church create including text, photos or art. Such a notice may also protect
copyrighted material that you obtain from a third party and that you have
inserted with permission on your website.
This article was adapted from a feature story by Richard Hammar, a church
law and tax attorney, that was published in the August 2009 edition of
Church Finance Today.

Two new studies to begin in early October.
Thursday Morning Bible Study resumes October 1. Join us at 10:30 a.m. in the
library for a new, in-depth study of scripture. This year's journey, led by
Ken Kovacs, will take us through the Gospel According to Matthew. We finish
up at noon and child care can be arrangement (please let us know in
advance). Whether you've a novice or a veteran Bible-wrestler, join us for
a lively discussion as we together seek to discern God's Word for our lives.
(Child care is available; please call the church office by September 29.)

Who Really Cares What Calvin Said? (Sundays, October 4, 11, 18, 25) John
Calvin is well known by Presbyterians, but he is not necessarily well
understood. Historical caricatures of his harsh and somber reputation have
threatened to overshadow his remarkable gifts to the church. As we celebrate
the 500th anniversary of Calvin's birth in 2009, we Presbyterians have an
opportunity to reintroduce ourselves to Calvin's legacy - his monumental
contributions to theology, church government, education, language, music,
and politics as well as the more troubling aspects. This study will help us
know Calvin better by offering a deeper engagement with the man and legacy.
At the heart of his life and work was the ongoing reform of the church. Our
text by contemporary theologian, William Stacy Johnson (John Calvin:
Reformer for the 21st Century; $12.00), will help us see how Calvin's words
continue to challenge our lives today. The study will be led by Ken Kovacs
on October 4, 11, & 18. On October 25 we will feature the new documentary,
John Calvin: His Life and Legacy.
Vickie Lord will be selling the Johnson text after worship this Sunday.

"The church is the only society in the world which exists
for the sake of those who are not its members."
Archbishop William Temple (1881-1944)
"The church is the church only when it exists for others.
The church must share in the secular problems of ordinary human life,
not dominating, but helping and serving."
Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945)
Scripture: Luke 14: 15-24
Sermon: The Word on the Street
Like last Sunday, the sermon this week will be closely tied to the adult
education class offered at 9 a.m. (details below). The broad theme for the
morning is "evangelism," a word that can cause panic among Presbyterians.
In the Luke text we find the parable of the banquet. Jesus says, pay
attention to the guest list. Look who is invited to participate in the good
news of God's Kingdom. The host extends the invitation to those in the
highways and byways, wherever people live. The host says fetch all the
people on the street without discrimination. There's plenty of room at the
table. But someone has to offer the invitation.
See you in worship! And why not invite a friend to join you this Sunday?

Adult Education
Growing in God's Grace: Join us on Sunday mornings, 9:00-10:00 a.m. in the
library. Child care is always provided.
September 27: How to Talk about Our Faith. The PCUSA designates this week as
Evangelism Sunday. If there's a word that stirs fear and trepidation into
the souls of Presbyterians, it's the word "evangelism." Presbyterians,
generally speaking, know what they believe and why. But many of us are
reluctant to talk about our faith, especially with strangers. Why is this?
What can we do to change this? Didn't Jesus say, "Go and tell"? Tell what?
We'll talk about our experiences and our fears and explore ways to overcome
some of our anxieties. Led by Ken
Kovacs.
October 4, 22, 18, 25: Who Really Cares What Calvin Said? John Calvin is
well known by Presbyterians, but he is not necessarily well understood.
Historical caricatures of his harsh and somber reputation have threatened to

11, & 18. On October 25 we will feature the new documentary, John Calvin:

Help Feed the Homeless at the Southwest Cold Weather Shelter: Sign up now
to make casseroles and desserts, help shop for perishables at Sam's Club on
Thursday afternoon, or help deliver on Friday afternoons. Catonsville
Presbyterian provides dinner and pick up breakfast each first and third
Friday from October to May. Use our recipes or your own. Each casserole
should feed 10-12 men and be ready to cook. Our first dates are October 2
and 16. If you are not able to prepare food, donations of cash help us buy
the perishables. Write CWS on the memo line of your check or indicate on
your envelope. If you have questions, call or email Ann Green (new:
AnnHGreen at aol.com) or Susan Hutton.
What is Gallimaufry?

established to offer opportunities for members of our congregation to become
better acquainted through a variety of social activities. There is no
membership and there are no dues. Please feel very welcome to participate in
any or all of these activities whenever you can. The group would enjoy your
company and welcome the opportunity to become better acquainted.
We invite you to the following events:
1) Cookout and Crab Feast: All members of the Catonsville Presbyterian
Church and their guests are cordially invited to attend this annual event
sponsored by Gallimaufry.
Date: Saturday, September 26, 2009
Time: 3 p.m.
Place: Dot Kielman's house - 9 Osborne Ave., Catonsville
(2 blocks east of the church)
Cost: $4 - plus cost of crabs. Guests are requested to bring
a salad or dessert to share.
Sign up in fellowship hall or call Sidney Turner, 410-788-8427 (email
vankoten at verizon.net).
2) Gallimaufry Trip to the Maryland Historical Society on Saturday, October

recognized (AAA GEM rating) Baltimore point of interest that has amassed
more than 200,000 pieces in its museum and nearly 7 million items in its
library through collecting since 1844. Enjoy the fascinating long-term and
temporary exhibits, including displays showing the importance of the
Chesapeake to Maryland for more than 350 years. Reminisce about, or learn
of, the experiences of Marylanders who served in World War II, which started
70 years ago, through a guided tour of the temporary special exhibit,
Maryland Veterans of World War II.
Cost: Seniors (60+) and high school students, $2.00; Non-senior

Subject: [Members-and-Friends] Baltimore Walk to Defeat ALS
Message-ID: <003801ca3dfa$402538e0$c06faaa0$@org>
Hello Friends!
I hope each of you is doing well. I am writing to let you know that my
family and friends are walking in the Baltimore Walk to Defeat ALS - most of
you know I was diagnosed with the disease a little over a year ago. The
Walk is on Saturday, October 17th at Druid Hill Park.
We are interested in forming a team again this year - "Team Ted." If you
wish to join us in the walk, we are going to make some fun t-shirts for our
team (probably orange baseball themed ones) so let me know if you'd also
like to purchase a t-shirt. I want to try to keep that cost at around $10.
You do not need a shirt to walk, or to even make a donation to join us.
Just coming out and joining Team Ted in the walk would mean so much to me
and my family.
All of you have offered your emotional support and I am so appreciative of
that, as is my entire family. I'm just contacting you to see if you can
offer any financial support to the ALS Association, and/or would like to
join me in the walk, as they are the only nonprofit devoted solely to
finding a cure and to empowering families with loved ones diagnosed with the
disease. The Association has done so much for my family this past year -
they are an incredible resource for us so raising money for the organization
once a year is one way we can give back. I understand that many of you may
not be able to give a financial donation - I appreciate the many ways each
of you is helping us.
If you can make a donation, please go to our Team page -
http://fightals.alsinfo.org/goto/Ted.Heun
You can make a donation there or if you feel more comfortable, you can mail
a check to my daughter, made out to the 'ALS Association'
My address:
Emily Heun Pate
2401 Hammonds Ferry Road
Baltimore, MD 21227
Please feel free to pass this message along to anyone you think may be
interested in joining us. Thanks in advance for all your support.
Always,
Ted Heun

Spirituality
What is your image of God?
How does it impact your prayer spiritual formation?
What are the right methods of prayer for you?
As a little kid, I secretly worried that I would be ?sent back.? Adopted at
six-days-old into an immensely loving home, I nevertheless somehow got it
into my head that any misstep would land me in an orphanage ? of the
Dickensian sort. (If Mother and Daddy had known about this, they?d have
been appalled!)
So maybe it?s not surprising that the God-image I carried around for years
was as a Keeper-of-Scores ? a divine Eagle Eye. This sad state was not
helped each communion Sunday, when the minister intoned ?We are not worthy
to gather the crumbs at thy table. . . .? I can still remember my inner
outrage: ?I?m just a kid! What could I have done that?s so bad!!? These days
? I?m grateful to say ? my relationship with the One who ?knit me in my
mother?s womb,? is life-giving, lively and full of trust. But I will never
forget the years when it was not.
Many of us carry around unhappy God-images that ? as the song says ? are so
high, low and wide that you can?t get over, under or around them. Images of
God fill our psyche so effectively that we hardly know they are of our own
manufacture. We yearn for an intimate relationship with a loving God but
experience only distance, absence or judgment untempered by grace. As
pastors, we meet folks who think this way all the time, both in and out of
the church; as human beings, we meet up with these unhealed parts of
ourselves, often unexpectedly, in the darndest places.
The Clergy Care Committee invites you to join with colleagues to explore
?What Is Your Image of God?? The Rev. Scott Blythe of Perry Hall will lead
us on an overnight retreat as we deepen our relationship with God and gain
insights to better help our parishioners do the same. The retreat will be
held 2pm Wednesday Oct. 7th to 2pm Thursday Oct. 8th at the Bishop Claggett
Center in Buckeysville. The retreat fee is $78. To register, email

Message-ID: <00d201ca41ee$f1e09690$d5a1c3b0$@org>
The Thursday Morning Bible Study resumes tomorrow, October 1, at 10:30 a.m.,
in the library. We'll embark on a journey through the Gospel According
to Matthew. Study guides will be available for purchase tomorrow morning.
Kathy Kekich, a staff member of the Child Care Center, will be providing
child care. However, Kathy is out sick this week and we're not sure she
will be coming in tomorrow. As soon as we hear from Nancy Wagner, director
of the Center, I will send out an update tomorrow morning.
Thanks,
Ken
