Catonsville Presbyterian Church is sending volunteers in two shifts. Some are working all day, others are going for the afternoon session only. If you'd like to be part of this incredible adventure --- we'd love for you to join us! For details on the full day event, contact Barbara Rice at church on Sunday. For those wishing to attend the afternoon session, we'll be leaving from the church at noon and returning by 4 pm. There'll be all kinds of interesting tasks: planting trees, assembling first aid kits or basic volunteer kits, perhaps doing some sorting at Habitat's ReStore. But all of these will include an overview of Habitat and its mission of helping people have a home. RSVP's are needed early -- by October 5th. If you would like to attend, please reply email, call the church office, or let Dorothy Boulton know on Sunday. This is an interfaith workday so it will be an opportunity to work side by side with many Jewish, Muslim, and Christian brothers and sisters -- we'll be working together to give glory to God! Hope you can be a partner! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <003f01ca4383$bfaf8b90$3f0ea2b0$@org> Who Really Cares What Calvin Said? (October 4, 11, 18, 25) 9:00 a.m. in the library. New Picture (13).bmp John Calvin (1509-1564) Perhaps the better question is: Why should anyone care what Calvin said? Answer: Because most of what we associate with and think about him is wrong. Myth No. 1: John Calvin was a real sourpuss. Myth No. 2: Calvin was a tyrant. Myth No. 3: Calvin and Calvinism are identical. Myth No. 4: Calvin was a religious fanatic. As we celebrate the 500th anniversary of his birth, it's time to set the record straight. That's why Stacy Johnson wrote, John Calvin: Reformer for the 21st Century (our text for this series; $12.00). It's time to look at the person, the man - his life and work - and really listen to what Calvin believed. Johnson wants us to see Calvin's amazing trust in the faithfulness of God and how this faith shaped the way he looked at the world and spent his days in service to Christ. It's why he became a reformer. This Sunday we'll look at Calvin's extraordinary vision of God. You might be surprised what you hear. Here is a sample: "There is not one blade of grass, there is no color in this world that is not intended to make us rejoice," Calvin said. And, therefore, we are "not only to be spectators in this beautiful theatre but to enjoy the vast bounty and variety of good things which displayed to us in it." In fact, "there is no spot in the universe wherein you cannot discern at least some sparks of God's glory." Ken __________________________ Rev. Kenneth E. Child care is always provided. October 4, 22, 18, 25: Who Really Cares What Calvin Said? John Calvin is well known by Presbyterians, but he is not necessarily well understood. Historical caricatures of his harsh and somber reputation have threatened to overshadow his remarkable gifts to the church. As we celebrate the 500th anniversary of Calvin's birth in 2009, we Presbyterians have an opportunity to reintroduce ourselves to Calvin's legacy - his monumental contributions to theology, church government, education, language, music, and politics as well as the more troubling aspects. This study will help us know Calvin better by offering a deeper engagement with the man and legacy. At the heart of his life and work was the ongoing reform of the church. Our text by contemporary theologian, William Stacy Johnson (John Calvin: Reformer for the 21st Century; $12.00), will help us see how Calvin's words continue to challenge our work today. The study will be led by Ken Kovacs on October 4, 11, & 18. On October 25 we will feature the new documentary, John Calvin: His Life and Legacy. The Thursday Morning Bible Study Resumed on October 1. Join us at 10:30 a.m. in the library for a new, in-depth study of scripture. This year's journey, led by Ken Kovacs, will take us through the Gospel According to Matthew. We finish up at noon and child care can be arranged (please let us know in advance). Whether you're a novice or a veteran Bible-wrestler, join us for a lively discussion as we together seek to discern God's Word for our lives. Mission Mission Trip Opportunity: The Presbytery of Baltimore is sponsoring an eight-day experience from January 25 to February 1, 2010, to our partners in Chimaltenango, Guatemala. The theme this year is "Weaving Faith Between Presbyterian Communities." During the eight-day excursion, participants will engage in activities with Mayan Presbyterians, share faith stories, participate in village Bible studies, and learn about local culture. The trip cost is $1,400 and covers flights, transfers, meals, hotel, village visits, and touring. Only 21 participants can go, and slots fill up quickly. A $700 deposit is due by November 1. Application Forms are available on the Mission bulletin board outside the kitchen. October 5, 2009 FOCUS ON HUNGER by Judy Binkley, Hunger Action Enabler While volunteering at the Light Street Soup Kitchen, I noticed that the people who came through the buffet line seemed to express so much gratitude for the meal; although, standing on the other side of the table ladling chicken casserole and green beans, I felt like I wasn?t doing much to warrant their deep appreciation. I only hoped that, somehow, I was making a difference. Everyday, one billion people go hungry on our planet. On October 16th, the Presbytery of Baltimore will join hundreds of hunger advocacy groups in observance of World Food Day (www.worldfooddayusa.org ) ? a global effort to increase awareness and focus on a year-round action plan to alleviate hunger. First held in 1981, World Food Day marks the founding of the United Nations Food & Agriculture Organization in 1945. Within our Church, World Food Day is sponsored by the Presbyterian Hunger Program and Presbyterian Women. On the Sunday nearest to World Food Day (or before Thanksgiving) congregations are encouraged to renew their commitment to ending hunger and poverty in God?s world. Free worship resources can be ordered or downloaded from the Bread for the World website (www.bread.org ). Materials include a scripture and sermon study on Mark 10:35-45, a new sacred song, and special prayers for the day and bulletin inserts. As the Presbytery?s new Hunger Action Enabler, I am called to educate, motivate, and facilitate hunger action within the Presbytery. Most are familiar with the parable: ?Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.? After a recent sermon on hunger at First of Bel Air Presbyterian Church, one congregant asked earnestly, ?So, how do we get them the fishing poles?? While providing food may alleviate the immediate need of those who are hungry we must also work together to develop a plan to eliminate the causes of hunger. I look forward to exchanging information with you on ways we can assist hungry people in our communities. I thank my predecessor, Ted Heun, who was unable to continue this calling due to health reasons, for laying the groundwork for this mission. Please join me and others worldwide in this valiant effort to make a difference in the fight against hunger. In Christ, Judy Inside this Issue Take Note/Act Now ? Clergy Retreat ? The topic will be "Torture and Christians." Dr. Hunsinger, an ordained Presbyterian minister, is the Hazel Thompson McCord Professor of Systematic Theology at Princeton Theological Seminary. He is the founder of the National Religious Campaign Against Torture, and he recently edited and contributed to Torture is a Moral Issue: Christians, Jews, Muslims, and People of Conscience Speak Out. Dr. Hunsinger's interest in the intersection of theology, politics, and ethics arises in part from his internationally recognized study of the great Swiss theologian Karl Barth. He has published widely on Barth, including three significant books. He is also an active ecumenist and has written The Eucharist and Ecumenism. http://www.stmarys.edu/ei/ei_index.htm The Ecumenical Institute of Theology St. Mary's Seminary & University 5400 Roland Avenue Baltimore, MD 21210-1994 I'm planning to attend Dr. Hunsinger's (he's one of my favorite contemporary theologians) lecture at the EI next Thursday evening. John Calvin (1509-1564) Scripture: 1 Peter 4: 7-11 Sermon: Seeing the Face(s) of God Peter says that when the end of time comes we can say we?ve been happy if we lived our lives in a certain way. Happiness is expanding our love and widening our hospitality and deepening our generosity, strengthening our service and sharing our gifts, all for the glory of God. When we live this way, living all to the glory of God, we get a glimpse of the very face of God. God acts this way toward us all the time in Christ; when we live this way we get a glimpse of the face of God in the people we love and welcome and generously serve. This what Peter calls us toward. This is also his vision for the life of the church. See you in worship! October 11, 18, 25: Who Really Cares What Calvin Said? John Calvin is well known by Presbyterians, but he is not necessarily well understood. As we celebrate the 500th anniversary of Calvin?s birth in 2009, we Presbyterians have an opportunity to reintroduce ourselves to Calvin?s legacy ? his monumental contributions to theology, church government, education, language, music, and politics as well as the more troubling aspects. At the heart of his life and work was the ongoing reform of the church. Our text by contemporary theologian, William Stacy Johnson (John Calvin: Reformer for the 21st Century; $12.00), will help us see how Calvin?s words continue to challenge our work today. The study will be led by Ken Kovacs. On October 25, we will feature the new documentary, John Calvin: His Life and Legacy. The Thursday Morning Bible Study Resumed on October 1. Join us at 10:30 a.m. in the library for an in-depth study of scripture. This year?s journey, led by Ken Kovacs, will take us through the Gospel According to Matthew. We finish up at noon and child care can be arranged (please let us know in advance). Whether you?re a novice or a veteran Bible-wrestler, join us for a lively discussion as we together seek to discern God?s Word for our lives. Stewardship Growing in God?s Grace? October 12, 2009 Energy Conservation: Why Energy Use is Shaping Our World & How We Must Respond The 21st century is going to be defined by energy: how we use it, conserve it and how it is polluting our air and water. Virtually every aspect of our lives is shaped by the use of energy. Without abundant, cheap energy our modern way of life would not exist; from the cars we drive, the businesses we run, to the food we eat. Did you know that heating and lighting of homes and commercial buildings consumes one-third of the entire energy output of this country? In fact, between 75 and 90 percent of the energy we consume is wasted by inefficient design, poor insulation, and the failure to adequately use energy saving technologies and methods. Almost all of the energy we use and enjoy every day comes directly from burning fossil fuels: oil, natural gas, and coal. As a result, each day, the average American household produces 150 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) which is more than any industrial country on the planet ? more than twice the European average, and five times the global average, mainly due to the distances we drive and the bigger houses we live in. Have you ever wondered what this all means? Is there a connection between your energy use, social justice, the food on your plate, disappearing plants and animals, ecosystem disruption, human population growth and global climate change? Is our rate of energy use sustainable? Should you change your habits? Is there a spiritual side to these issues that we need to explore? What can the church community do? If these are such big issues, why have politicians and the business community virtually ignored them until recently? These questions and more will be explored and discussed at our energy workshop on Saturday November 7, 2009 at the Catonsville Presbyterian Church. By participating in this event, you will become more aware of some of the challenges we face and how best to respond as an individual and as a church community. Please come and join us for an informative presentation and lively discussion. Charlie Conklin, Care of Creation Task Group Blessing of the Animals: ?Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth, across the dome of sky.? Genesis 1:20 The sky was a sparkling blue and the wind swept through the trees as several people and their pets gathered on the front lawn of Springfield Presbyterian Church in Sykesville to celebrate the gift of creatures God has given us. Rev. H. Richard Neff presided over the afternoon service and Mrs. Linda Caviglia played a brisk tune on the flute as six animals were brought forward to be blessed. There was a two-year-old black cat named Max; two Shih Tzu brothers celebrating an early-October birthday; a brown and black Chihuahua named Pepe; and a couple of Dachshunds named Sparky and Scooter. They were all very cute and were a joy to have at the service. After the scripture reading and a prayer of blessings, each animal got to enjoy treats. Thank you to all the people who brought their pets to be blessed. Reported by Olivia Oates, 12, of Springfield Presbyterian Church Inside this Issue Take Note/Act Now ? Rolls & Registers Workshop ? Message-ID: <000c01ca4c48$b8dbcf90$2a936eb0$@org> Hello Friends! I hope each of you is doing well. I am writing to let you know that my family and friends are walking in the Baltimore Walk to Defeat ALS - most of you know I was diagnosed with the disease a little over a year ago. The Walk is on Saturday, October 17th at Druid Hill Park. We are interested in forming a team again this year - "Team Ted." If you wish to join us in the walk, we are going to make some fun t-shirts for our team (probably orange baseball themed ones) so let me know if you'd also like to purchase a t-shirt. I want to try to keep that cost at around $10. You do not need a shirt to walk, or to even make a donation to join us. Just coming out and joining Team Ted in the walk would mean so much to me and my family. All of you have offered your emotional support and I am so appreciative of that, as is my entire family. I'm just contacting you to see if you can offer any financial support to the ALS Association, and/or would like to join me in the walk, as they are the only nonprofit devoted solely to finding a cure and to empowering families with loved ones diagnosed with the disease. We share it with you, with thanks to Ann, and in anticipation of our Pledge Commitment Sunday, October 18. The Joy of Giving By Ann Green Talking about stewardship is not entirely in character for me. Now it is true that I have become pretty fearless at asking people to donate food for the men at the Cold Weather Shelter. So much so that as soon as I walk into a room and say hello, I am likely to hear "Do you still need casseroles?" Aside from this I am a behind the scenes person by choice. In fact in the Facebook quiz, "Which Raven player are you?" despite my Walter Mitty aspirations, I was Ed Reed, the workhorse, the person who shows up every week and just does his job. So why do I intentionally step out of my comfort zone to actually talk about stewardship? If there were a top 10 list of sensitive topics for Presbyterians, it surely ranks way up there at the top. We all know that our community of faith depends on monetary contributions to do its work. Still actually asking for money seems intrusive. Yet, I volunteered. What was I thinking? For one thing I was thinking of a deacon call I made last week to ask what a family in crisis needed. During the conversation I was told, "I don't know what we would do without the church." My instinctive reply was, "I don't know what any of us would do without the church. We are happy to help." Long after I had arranged for some meals to help out I was still thinking about that simple yet profound statement: "I don't know what we would do without the church." Having come to Catonsville Presbyterian from a church in conflict, Peter and I had faced the question of what to do without a church. Coming here to this church, this congregation, and these pastors gave us space and helped us find peace and new purpose in our lives. Both of us are very grateful for that. Growing up in faithful families, we were aware of the idea of stewardship. My Southern Baptist parents actually tithed on a school principal's salary. Peter's mother sent a check every year of her life to her home church in Baton Rouge and had someone write it for her when her arthritis made writing impossible. Still stewardship was a learning process for the two of us and we had good years and lean years. Gradually as a family we progressed from random giving to making a regular pledge. Why do we give? Why do we pledge when no one knows what the next day will bring? Peter and I pledge and give as we are able because we love God and want to work for his kingdom on earth through the work of this wonderful congregation. We give to maintain the bricks and mortar of this sacred space, to allow our family and others the opportunity to grow in faith together, to support the missions of the PC(USA) and local needs, to be part of the community of faith that we find essential. We give to help support the work of our two splendid young pastors, to acknowledge the many gifts of our support staff which underpin the work here, to celebrate the outstanding music gracing our services. Bottom line: we give because it gives us joy to do so. "Where your treasure is, there your heart is also" has been true for us. Whatever the future brings to Catonsville Presbyterian, we want to be part of it. "Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever give each of you has received." 1 Peter 4:10 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... John died yesterday afternoon, October 14, at Howard County Medical Center, with his wife, Pat, by his side. He was 83. John joined the Catonsville Presbyterian Church community in 1958 and quickly became a respected leader in the congregation. He was first ordained an Elder in 1960, and was then installed for additional terms as Elder in 1968, 1972, 1976, 1980, 1989, 1996, and 2002. From 1998-1999, John chaired the last Pastoral Nominating Committee. John was also very active in Baltimore Presbytery and served as Moderator in 1983-1984. There will be a Memorial Service of Witness to the Resurrection at the church, probably within the next two weeks. The family is still working on plans. Please keep Pat and their children, Tim, Pat, and Kristen, and their extended family in your prayers. Rest eternal grant unto him, O Lord. And let light perpetual shine upon him. Amen. Rev. Ken Kovacs is leading the study. On October 25, we will feature the new documentary, John Calvin: His Life and Legacy. Thursday Morning Bible Study: Join us at 10:30 a.m. in the library for an in-depth study of scripture. This year?s journey began on October 1 and is taking us through the Gospel According to Matthew. We finish up at noon and child care can be arranged (please let us know in advance). We share it with you, with thanks to Laurie. Peter Green asked me to speak on where I thought God was at work at CPC. The first thing that came to mind was a burning bush. I like the obvious. Since I hadn't noticed any fires around, I needed some time to think on this. Where is God at work here? Despite the absence of the obvious, the pat answer came as everywhere. We do a lot of good things here. But my mind stopped on this and wondered is that God at work or people at work? How can you see the difference? What is the difference? After a while, I got it. My most favorite thing to do as an elder was to serve communion, especially by intinction. The privilege of offering the cup of salvation to each person who came forward, to say that this cup was for them, moved me each and every time. To see each person approaching - some smiling, some crying, some stoic, some nervous, and even some indifferent. Here right in front of me was the face of God - in each and every person. So going back to my ponderable - how can you see the difference between God at work or people at work, I realized you can't. We're intertwined. We cannot untangle ourselves from the identity of being God's children. We can pretend we don't know or we even invent our own identities but we cannot change the fact that God is busy claiming us. God comes from another side and makes us his. We might deny whose we are, but we cannot stop God from claiming us. Ok so why am I up here telling you all of this? Well it's because it's stewardship season. I don't know a way to tactfully encourage everyone here to fill out a pledge card (tact is not my strong suit) However, I do want to lift up that pledging is responsive. Pledging is an action you can take to claim your identity as one of God's own. It's kind of like putting on a name tag and saying, Hello, I'm Laurie and I'm a child of God. It's meeting God on the way. Supporting the work of Catonsville Presbyterian with a pledge is in a way, honoring the claim God has placed on all the people around you. It's affirming that God's face is here. Pledging might feel mundane or even awkward, but it is something real to do. It makes a statement not only to the church but to ourselves that we understand in some way the claim made on us. And perhaps through such an action, you might discover a joy that you told God you do know whose you are. "Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever give each of you has received." 1 Peter 4:10 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... JACK SHARP Message-ID: <004c01ca51b5$6456a1d0$2d03e570$@org> ?? October 20, 2009 GEDCO HONORS REV. JACK SHARP The Presbytery of Baltimore has been blessed to have the Rev. John ?Jack? Sharp in our midst for more than thirty years. This man has an amazing store-house of energy and a passion for justice. He is someone who took neither ?no? for an answer nor said ?no? to someone else. Not only did Jack serve Govans Presbyterian Church and Springfield Presbyterian Church with distinction and great love for their people, but he also led the Presbytery as its moderator from 1986 to 1987 and served as president of the Central Maryland Ecumenical Council. Jack has built more solid bridges with the Jewish community than virtually any other minister in Baltimore. And, oh yes, when it comes to community fundraising he can extract money from folks as tight-fisted as a rock ? apparently, with little effort. Jack is an idealist far more than a pragmatist. All of these qualities have made him a man with whom one might not always agree but can still remain a friend and colleague. On November 12th, the Govans Ecumenical Development Corporation (GEDCO) will honor jack in recognition of his character, but even more for his vision and passion for transforming the city in which he lives. As the founding President of GEDCO, he has seen an amazing array of advances beginning with Epiphany House and continuing with the Green House Residencies at Stadium Place. Who in this Presbytery would have the vision, the perseverance and the unwavering resolve to have stood in the desolate lot that once housed Memorial Stadium and envision Stadium Place, a mixed income retirement community? It is rare for a minister to have his or her ministry honored in the way that GEDCO will recognize Jack on November 12th. The honorary chairs for this tribute are Martin O?Malley, Barbara Mikulski, and Ben Cardin. Others include Art Abramson, Shale Stiller, Sheila Dixon, as well as dozens of other leaders in the state of Maryland. Jack and GEDCO have touched so many different folks. I hope you can set aside this time to join with others in our Presbyterian community as well as the Baltimore community at large to honor both the work of our brother and the work he has done on behalf of the larger community of Baltimore It happens at Loyola University?s McGuire Hall at 6:30pm on November 12th. For more information you can go to www.gedco.org/tribute. And thanks, Jack, for allowing God to use you in so many different ways. Blessings, Peter Nord Inside this Issue Take Note/Act Now ? A memorial service will be held 11am Saturday, Oct. 24th at the church. For years, Mr. Schwartz served as a lecturer and Director of undergraduate Information Systems program at UMBC. Mr. Schwartz is survived by his wife, Pat; three children and three grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Catonsville Presbyterian Church Building Fund. Jesus called them finding life, losing life, and finding life again, with the paradoxical promise that finders will be losers while those who lose their lives for his sake will end up finding them again. You do not have to die in order to discover the truth of this teaching. You only need to lose track of who you are, or who you thought you were supposed to be, so that you end up lying flat on the dirt floor basement of your heart. Do this, Jesus says, and you will live." Barbara Brown Taylor, Leaving Church Text: Psalm 34, Mark 10:46-52 In worship we'll be sharing together the story of Blind Bartimaeus, a remarkable tale of vision and discipleship. It gives us an opportunity to reflect on our own response to Jesus' question, "What do you want me to do for you?" What would we answer? It is a particularly compelling question in this time of stewardship and visioning for our congregation. Let's share good news as we gather on Sunday morning, calling out in confidence, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" Do we dare to leap up and follow Jesus on the way? See you in worship! I've enjoyed working with them thus far and have colleagues who have been very pleased with Illume's services. Illume has set up a Travel Resource Center for this tour: www.travelillume.com/trc/kkv. Here you will find a detailed itinerary and price list - everything you need to know about the tour. Application deadline is November 30. The Jordan-Egypt Pilgrimage Tour is not a CPC-sponsored event but something I am organizing on my own and inviting folks to experience. (It will be considered vacation time.) With Session's support, I am extending an invitation first to the CPC community and will then be opening it up to friends beyond the church. Interested? Pray about it. Have any questions? October 26, 2009 Given these difficult economic times, I share good news with you today. The Presbytery of Baltimore?s Self-Development of People (SDOP) committee has approximately $30,000 in grant money to award to low-income community groups who have shown a commitment to empowering economically poor, oppressed and disadvantaged people. While church mission dollars support many worthy organizations doing fabulous work, SDOP funds are geared more toward self-reliance, long-term solutions and the empowerment of people. Last year, a $10,000 grant from the Presbytery?s SDOP committee provided seed money to help youth at Knox Presbyterian Church start a thriving banner printing business. Another SDOP grant enabled a group of recovering addicts and their families to attend a series of weekend spiritual retreats away from the urban blight that spawned their addictions. The criteria for qualifying for a SDOP grant is quite simple: the program, business or service seeking funding must be owned and controlled by the group who will benefit directly from it. Further details and an application may be obtained at http://www.baltimorepresbytery.org/programs/SDOP_local.php. The SDOP application deadline is 3pm on Tuesday, December 1st, 2009. SDOP is a ministry of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A) and primarily funded through annual offerings from ?One Great Hour of Sharing? during the Lenten season. The Presbytery of Baltimore is pleased to have a variety of individuals dedicated to social change to serve on its local SDOP committee. For further information about SDOP, please contact Deborah Milcarek, Associate for Mission, Peace & Justice, at 410.433.2012 or email dmilcarek at baltimorepresbytery.org. If you're interested in attending, please respond to the links listed below. Tuesday, October 27, 2009 Care of Creation Workshop Nov. 7, 2009 On Saturday, November 7 at Catonsville Presbyterian Church, the Presbytery's Creation Care Group is holding an energy conservation workshop entitled, "Why Energy Use is Shaping Our World and How We Must Respond". The focus is scientific, economic, and scriptural. Its purpose is to bring together church leaders and members to answer our calling of addressing the urgent challenges and abundant opportunities of Caring for God's Creation by: A. Learning about the need and opportunities for immediate actions to conserve energy and reduce costs B. Listening and Learning about the theological basis for our calling and its impact on all church mission C. Providing resources and knowledge from what churches are doing in the Presbytery and nationally D. Providing a discussion on how to engage your church membership including a mentoring/nurturing process to support sustainability E. Listen for God's calling There will be three presentations, followed by Q and A and small group discussions. The first presenter is Dan Evans, a Vice-President at Legg Mason. For years Dan has researched energy production, use, environmental impact, and investment opportunities. He will offer some of the advanced thinking regarding our energy needs, habits and mostly significantly, consequences. The second presenter is Dr. Ted Durr. He has been a pastor to several congregations in our presbytery, received the Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins, and, like Dan, has spent years researching the biblical, theological, and cultural ramifications of our attitude toward energy and its use with tools and materials. He has prepared a 9 page guide relating scriptures and beliefs as they affect our approach to God's creation. The third presentation will focus on energy conservation measures churches can employ to reduce energy needs - and costs and consequences. Representatives from Terralogos, an energy conservation green architectural firm will provide actions they have implemented with local churches and ones we can take with our own churches. Resources will be available to provide additional energy conservation measures for churches. One area that will be considered is the bulk purchase of renewable energy for churches within the Presbytery of Baltimore. We hope you can join us. To help in planning, please register by emailing me at ceconklin12 at verizon.net by Nov 5. We've enclosed workshop information and ask that you forward this email to people who you think might be interested. Thanks for your help! The asset-mapping exercise that will be conducted at those meetings will be interesting, informative, and exciting, and will allow each of us to be an integral part of developing the vision for Catonsville Presbyterian Church in the years to come. It is vital that these meetings represent a cross-section of our membership in order to provide valid feedback to the Vision Task Force for the visioning process, so we are encouraging everyone to participate! We have planned three Holy Conversations meetings, each in a different time slot so that all members should have an opportunity to attend one of the meetings: * Sunday, November 1, 3 - 5 p.m. (child care and refreshments provided) * Sunday, November 8*, 6 - 8 p.m. (child care and light dinner provided) * Sunday November 15, 9 - 10:15 a.m. (Adult Education hour) *November 8th will also have a special youth session for middle & high school youth. Sign-up sheets are provided in Fellowship Hall after worship, in order to help us plan for food and child care. If you miss a chance to sign up, be sure to come anyway; we need everyone's point of view to be represented! Thanks for your assistance in this important effort for the future of our church. Volunteers are needed to help increase our church?s visibility in the neighborhood. On Saturday, November 14, 2009, at 9:30 a.m. we will meet in fellowship hall for a brief 30-minute orientation and go out into the neighborhoods around CPC and place door hangers inviting our neighbors to visit us and be a part of our faith community. Our goal is to share information about CPC, not to evangelize or convert. We will also help the Vision Task Force by observing the neighborhoods we visit and sharing our impressions upon return after the walk. If you want to volunteer, please see Cindy Bolognese during fellowship hour or call or email her at 410-247-4434 ( cbolognese at k9trailblazers.org). Here you will find a detailed itinerary and price list ? everything you need to know about the tour. Application deadline is November 30. The Jordan-Egypt Pilgrimage Tour is not a CPC-sponsored event but something I am organizing on my own and inviting folks to experience. (It will be considered vacation time.) With Session?s support, I am extending an invitation first to the CPC community and will then be opening it up to friends beyond the church. Interested? Pray about it. Have any questions?
