May 4, 2009 REDISCOVERING THE JOY OF GIVING NEW CONSECRATION SUNDAY STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM Most churches in this Presbytery operate their stewardship programs like civic charities, sporadically requesting financial support to increase the general budget or fund a particular cause. But, spiritual giving and the methods used to encourage congregations to invest in church ministries are far different from the slick, persuasive tactics used in community fundraising. According to Herb Miller, celebrated author of The New Consecration Sunday Stewardship Program, there is a direct correlation between how Christian stewardship is defined and taught and a congregation's giving response. The church as the household of Christ is peopled by those who are called to know God through their stewardship walk with Jesus. As such, Miller said, the Church desires to contribute to God's work by helping individuals discern "What is God calling me to do?" rather than question "What does the church need from me in order to pay its bills." Miller contends that the goal of The New Consecration Sunday Stewardship Program is the faithful management of all God gives so that God can use our gifts to transform us spiritually and to extend Christ's transforming love to others. The program is based on a biblical and spiritual theology of the need of the giver to give for the individual's own spiritual benefit rather that on the need of the church to receive. It teaches percentage giving as the path to growing cheerful givers - often resulting in a 10 to 15 percent increase in church pledges and a greater understanding about the faith connection between money and living in response to God's love. Two churches in the Presbytery have already experienced significant increases in spiritual giving using The New Consecration Sunday Stewardship Program. At Harundale Presbyterian Church's Pastor, Tracey Davenport, said the congregation has "rediscovered the joy of giving" and increased its pledges by 11 percent. Members of Havre de Grace Presbyterian Church are equally enthusiastic about the program and pledging for its first stewardship drive in years. We invite your church to experience a revival in spiritual giving, too! As Christians, we believe prayer is something we should do, and Paul even admonishes us to pray constantly (1 Thessalonians 5:17). However, questions about prayer often arise. How do I cultivate a prayer life? Is there right or wrong way to pray? Why are there so many different forms of prayer? Are some more appropriate on particular occasions? Why do certain types of prayer resonate with particular individuals while seeming impenetrable to others? Have I found the best match of prayer activities for my own personality? Is there a wrong or a right way to walk the labyrinth? Come join us for a three-hour experiential prayer workshop. After an overview discussion about the nature of prayer, we?ll spend time exploring various prayer stations or fifteen minute workshops. You can choose to walk the church?s labyrinth, try lectio divina, experience contemplative prayer, start a prayer journal, try your hand at an arts and crafts station, learn forms of prayers for different personality types, pray with images, or pray the grounds. After the various workshops, we?ll gather to experience worship in the style of Taiz?. For those who can stay past 12:15, a light lunch will be provided. Child care will be available. Why do you think this is?" - question posed to church historian Roberta C. Bondi, Christian Century, March 1996. This coming Sunday, we'll dive deep into the realm of prayer. What are our obstacles for prayer? Is prayer something that intimidates us? How do we get around our "oughts" and "shoulds?" Do the images of God that we carry around with us help or hinder our prayer? We join with the early disciples as we ask of Jesus, "Lord, teach us to pray." May 11, 2009 Disaster Response: Is Your Congregation Ready? The immediate H1N1 (swine) flu crisis has subsided, and, fortunately it has been mild. This outbreak prompted organizations, including houses of worship, to take precautionary measures to minimize the risk for spreading the flu. The Presbytery of Baltimore?s Disaster Response and Readiness Committee recommended ways churches can reduce risk of spreading influenza during communion, ?passing the peace? and fellowship. (For details, click flu) This advice is helpful, but does not address the larger issue of preparedness planning that is necessary for congregations to weather any crisis. Since 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, congregations and clergy, are more aware of their caring role during a disaster (man-made or natural) and the need to be prepared. Many of us, who went to the Gulf Coast, witnessed that congregations form the backbone for long-term operations and recovery. The primary role of a faith community in a crisis or disaster is to offer comfort and hope. People turn to churches and clergy for clarity and direction in times of crisis. Our congregations promote healing through worship, prayer, and caring activities that embrace and engage all people the young, the old and others living on the edge of mainstream society. Most congregations have an established and trusted role in their communities, and can bring meaning and perspective to those whose lives are impacted by disaster. The church is ? and, should be ? the ?non-anxious presence in a time of turmoil and confusion. Congregation across the Presbytery responded last fall to a survey from the Disaster Response and Readiness Committee; and, your responses were telling. Very few congregations had engaged in any form of crisis planning. Now, in the wake of the H1N1 Influenza crisis is an excellent time for congregations to take a serious look at how they will respond in a crisis or disaster. If you need assistance, contact the Presbytery?s Disaster Response and readiness Committee or consult one of many internet resources. Think Ahead, Celebrate Life and Make A Plan! "Prayer is none other than an expanding heart in the presence of God." John Calvin As Christians, we believe prayer is something we should all do, and Paul even admonishes us to pray constantly (1 Thessalonians 5:17). However, questions about prayer often arise: How do I cultivate a prayer life? Is there right or wrong way to pray? Why are there so many different forms of prayer? Are some more appropriate on particular occasions? Why do certain types of prayer resonate with particular individuals while seeming impenetrable to others? Have I found the best match of prayer activities for my own personality? Is there a wrong or a right way to walk the labyrinth? Join us for a three-hour experiential prayer workshop. After an overview discussion about the nature of prayer, participate in fifteen-minute rotational workshops. The offerings include: Personality types & prayer (Ken Kovacs) Praying with art (Nina Lagervall) Praying through music (Rai Cary) Praying your experiences (Hollie Einolf) The ancient practice of lectio divina (Vickie Lord) Prayer journaling & dream work (Ken Kovacs) Using the labyrinth (Dorothy Boulton) Praying the grounds (Rai Cary) Centering prayer & breath prayer (Dorothy Boulton) Prayer through arts & crafts (Cindy Bolognese) Resources for Multiple Prayer Practices (Kathy Glennan) Time for silent prayer in the sanctuary. We?ll close with worship in the sanctuary with an abbreviated Taiz? service of contemplative prayer and song. For those who can stay past 12:15, a light lunch will be served. Eugene Ackerman Dead: Pastor Encouraged Small-Town Church Involvement in Local Mission Partnerships -- Special Edition May 13-, 2009 Rev. Gene Ackerman (circa. 1970s) Rev. Eugene R. Ackerman Dead: Pastor Encouraged Small-Town Church Involvement in Local Mission Partnerships Rev. Eugene R. Ackerman, who encouraged small-town congregations to embrace community-based mission work through ecumenical partnerships, died Saturday of congestive heart failure at Carroll Lutheran Village Diven House in Westminster. He was 97 years old. >From 1967 to 1977, Rev. Ackerman served as pastor of Emmitsburg Presbyterian Church in Frederick County and Taneytown Presbyterian Church in Carroll County. Each Sunday, he drove 20-miles back and forth across county lines to preside over services for both congregations which, at most, totaled 153 members. Longtime traditional worshippers - church members expected Rev. Ackerman to be no less conventional, according to a letter the pastor wrote to the Presbytery in the mid 1970s. However, he explained, "while I believe the pastoral and preaching functions are foundational for any successful ministry, my hope was to somehow involve our churches in mission beyond their benevolent giving to the Presbytery and the General Assembly." However, "the problem was (and still is) limited resources: physical, financial and human," he added. In an effort to use what resources were available - as well as, tie into the ecumenical spirit of the time - Rev. Ackerman encouraged the churches' involvement with community ministries sponsored by the Taneytown area Ministerium (of which he served as president) and the council of churches in Emmitsburg. Through these ecumenical alliances, members participated in and financially supported interdenominational weekday church school, vacation bible school, youth centers, senior activities, community projects and other enterprises that "opened the door to individual Christian growth." Thus, wrote Rev. Ackerman, "what we could not do alone was accomplished through larger sharing. [And], in the meantime the normal ministry of cultivation and nurture has been strengthened and the pastoral /congregation relationship continues warm and intimate." In 1978, Rev. Ackerman became pastor of Franklinville Presbyterian Church and served its congregation for ten years before retiring due to failing health. He also served as an interim minister at Havre de Grace Presbyterian Church. Prior to being called to service in the Presbytery, he was ordained as a Methodist minister and served churches around Baltimore. Rev. Ackerman studied religion at Western Maryland College and Westminster Seminary, while working as a clerk at Proctor and Gamble and a youth counselor. He also studied at Princeton Theological Seminary. Twice married, Rev. Ackerman is survived by his second wife of 57 years, Janice Beisel (nee) Ackerman of Westminster. He also is survived by: three sons, Diehl Ackerman of Morehead, KY. Tom Newkirk of Hudson, FL. and David Newkirk of Breckenridge, CO.; two daughters, Jeanne Mueller of Westminster, MD and Carole Custer of Halethorpe, MD; 10 grandchildren and a host of family and friends. Graveside services for Rev. Ackerman will be held 1pm Friday, May 15th at Franklinville United Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Bradshaw. Memorial services will be held 1:30pm Tuesday May 19th at Krug Chapel Auditorium at Carroll Lutheran Village in Westminster. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Carroll Lutheran Village Endowment Fund, 300 St. Luke Circle, Westminster, MD 21158. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Barbara Rice for the Mission Committee The Safe Motherhood Kit program provides sterile birthing supplies to mothers in the Congo, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Haiti, where there is little or no access to prenatal care. The kit contains plastic sheeting, sterile gloves, scalpel, an umbilical tie, and gauze pads, as well as a bar of soap, a washcloth, a baby hat, baby gown/tunic, and a blanket. For a cost of $25, the kit is packaged and shipped by IMA World Health to these countries. Education is also provided about the importance of clean and sterile birthing procedures and training on the proper use of the kit. Thank you to all of you who have supported this health program. Due to popular demand, the kit will again be offered for sale on Sunday, May 17, through the Mission Committee. This is a year-round project, but is especially popular on or near Mother's Day. Your gift will help a mother and her baby get a healthy start, even though they live in an area where infant and mother mortality rates are among the highest in the world. I gave the sort of answer most of us might give: I emphasized the church's unique life-transforming mission and its special responsibility to treasure and transmit precious traditions across generations. It was a good answer?but today I am afraid I'd have to add that of all nonprofits, congregations as a group are the most cautious and least willing to accept risk in order to fulfill their mission. In a majority of churches, the first response to a new mission idea is often, "If you're willing to take charge, just go ahead!" Then, after a pause: "Unless, of course, you need money. In that case you'd have to ask a committee to allocate some of its budget. If you need a budget increase, then the finance committee needs to pass on it, and on their recommendation the board might or might not say OK. Or sometimes things go to the board first, and then finance. If your idea would require new staff, you have to go to the personnel committee?but, honestly, you might as well forget it. The senior minister has wanted an associate for years. The music director has been asking for a youth choir director since VE Day. There's no way any other staff will be approved until those two get what they want, or die." We who lead congregations have a lot to learn from people who lead other kinds of organizations ? especially, from the leaders of nonprofits. Some may say that congregations are different, and a pastor is not the same as an executive director. That is true, but not for the reasons you might think. Churches and synagogues are organized as an expression of religious faith?but that is also true of many charities, whether they are explicitly "faith-based" or not. Nonprofits are far more willing to risk the treasure in their keeping?which was, in most cases, very little to begin with?in an all-out effort to fulfill their mission. Congregations naturally structure themselves to avoid risk; and, most, by contrast, act as though the Great Commandment simply said, "Exist." >From the best leaders of nonprofits, we can learn the advantages of a clear decision-making structure that holds leaders accountable. One part of our accountability is for sheltering our common treasure against theft and waste. The other part of our accountability?the part we aren't so good at?is for the results that can come only when we weigh the stewardship of prudence against the stewardship of risk. Now, all of us are blind by nature in this respect. Accordingly, it cannot penetrate into our minds unless the Spirit, as the inner teacher, through his illumination makes entry for it.? John Calvin (1509-1564), Institutes of the Christian Religion, III.ii.34 _____________________ In the lead up to Pentecost (May 31), I've set aside three Sundays to explore the person and work of the Holy Spirit. Last week we looked at the role of the Holy Spirit as Advocate and Friend. This week we'll explore the Spirit role as Teacher. Here are some of the questions we'll be asking throughout the series: Who is the Holy Spirit? What was the Spirit sent to do? What is the relationship between the Holy Spirit and Christ? What is the role of the Spirit in our individual lives? In the church? If Pentecost was so significant (and it was), why is it so often overlooked by the church? What is the Spirit trying to fire up in you? Where is the power of the Holy Spirit at work in your life? Sermon Series: Come, Creator Spirit: II. Teacher (May 24) ? Mission A BIG THANK YOU to the congregation for sharing resources to change lives. Mid-May we sent $2,735.90 to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) for the monies collected during Lent and designated for One Great Hour of Sharing. Your gifts support ministries of disaster response, refugee assistance and resettlement, and community development that help people find safe refuge, start new lives and work together to strengthen their families and communities. So where will the money go? The Presbyterian Hunger Program will receive 36 percent while the Self-Development of People and Presbyterian Disaster Assistance will each receive 32 percent. You can find out more about these programs by visiting the PCUSA website: http://www.pcusa.org/oghs. Thank you to the congregation for your wonderful support of the Safe Motherhood Kit program, which is sponsored by IMA World Health, in New Windsor, MD. During our recent three-week awareness campaign, funds were donated to purchase/prepare and ship 43 kits. These kits contain sterile birthing materials and basic care items for a newborn. IMA will send these kits to mothers in the Congo, Rwanda, or Haiti where the maternal death rate is extremely high. You have made a difference in the lives of these mothers and their newborns! If you missed this opportunity, these kits will be offered again at the Strawberry Festival at the mission table. Glenda Johnson ? for the Mission Committee ?Buy a Brick? in Support of Habitat for Humanity: As a member of ?United Churches,? we are helping to sponsor the rehabilitation of a house through Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity. The cost of this sponsorship is $100,000. Each member church donates $5,000 (our donation comes from mission funds), but each church does additional fundraising to meet the goal. The way each of us can help meet the goal is to ?buy a brick.? The ?Buy a Brick? display will be in fellowship hall most Sundays following worship. If you would like to support Habitat with your hands, there are many opportunities to work on-site. There are a limited number of ?open spots? on many Saturdays. There is also a special need for volunteers who can work on-site on weekdays. A Habitat workday is 8:15-3:45 (with breaks for snack and lunch!). You can see the work calendar by registering online at chesapeakehfh.org/volunteer and using the ?join codes? UC09 and CPC09 (last two digits of each are numeric). If you sign up and receive confirmation or waitlist status, please forward to barbararice at mailstation.com. You may also email or call me at 410-281-2189 (or catch me on a Sunday after worship!) for any questions or help. Thanks so much for your support and involvement. May 26, 2009 Joshua, Living Into God?s Design Joshua Bible Study In the new bible study guide, Joshua: Living Into God?s Design? a publication of the Network of Presbyterian Women in Leadership ?Rev. Jane B. Johnson recounts a frigid Sunday afternoon when she, her husband and three small sons were stranded after their car broke down on a desolate road in Iowa. Faced with impossible odds in sub-zero degree weather, the family turned in desperation to prayer. Moments passed before a large, bearded man driving a sedan, seemingly, appeared out of nowhere along the road and stopped just long enough to fix the family?s car before continuing on his way. Whether an angel or divine intervention ? many of us have had moments of hopelessness and helplessness in which God intervened in miraculous ways. The Book of Joshua is particularly filled with stories of answered prayer as well as other lessons that may serve as a guide along life?s journey, writes Rev. Johnson in the ?Joshua? study guide. ?The stories in Joshua help us wrestle with issues relevant to our lives today such as judgment and grace, success and prosperity, transmitting our Christian beliefs and values to our children, church discipline, immigration, deception and the troubling problem of the Holy War.? Rev. Johnson shares personal experiences like the story of the stranger who fixed the family car as a way to encourage others to link their life stories with God?s story from the Old Testament to the New Testament. In doing so, she writes, ?God?s word comes alive to us in new and fresh ways . . . [and as a result], we are strengthened and encouraged, our relationship with God and others is deepened and we grow spiritually.? Joshua TOC Rev. Jane B. Johnson serves as the Presbytery?s Associate for Leadership Development, Education and Youth.
