June 1, 2009 Mission Celebration 2009 Experience the embodiment of your generosity and commitment to the mission of the Presbytery of Baltimore as we gather at the 835th Stated Meeting to celebrate Mission Celebration 2009. The celebration ? scheduled for Thursday, June 18th at Central Presbyterian Church in Towson ? will feature displays from dozens of local organizations that have partnered with Presbytery congregations to provide community services to aid those who are hungry; homeless; in crisis; and, lacking education or opportunity. Representatives from each organization will be available to provide specific information about their programs. In addition, the Global Mission Team will offer presentations by our Cuban, Guatemalan and Dakota Indian partnerships. Come and celebrate; learn and be touched by the stories of these committed folks in their endeavor to bridge cultural gaps and build relationships throughout the world. Sure to be both enlightening and fun ? festivities for Mission Celebration 2009 kick-off at 3pm during registration in the church parking lot. Members are invited to gather in fellowship and enjoy scrumptious snacks provided by the Doughy Dog while listening to the soul-stirring melodies of a live band, Winds of Hope, Winds of Healing. The Doughy Dog was the recipient of the 2008 Dream Gift from the Presbytery. This mobile eatery prepares coffee, doughnuts and hotdogs for hungry churchgoers in their parking lots on Sunday mornings. It is operated by men and women who were once homeless, but are now receiving vocational training, housing and counseling from Arundel House of Hope. The soft-rock music band, Winds of Hope, Winds of Healing, appears as result of its own mission agenda. The band was formed to address the hidden problem of mental health issues stemming from Hurricane Katrina on the Gulf Coast. Their music is amazing and their mission is inspirational. Last year?s Mission Celebration was a joy! You?ll be inspired again this year as we gather for Mission Celebration 2009. Rublev's "Old Testament Trinity" "For, in the name of God, the Father and Lord of the universe, and of our Savior Jesus Christ, and of the Holy Spirit, they then receive the washing with water." Scripture: Isaiah 6:1-8 & Romans 8:12-17 Meditation: Family Resemblance You might have seen a copy of this icon (above) in the library or the France Room lately. I've been using is a lot in adult education classes leading up to Easter. Rublev's "Old Testament Trinity" depicts the welcome Abraham and Sarah offered to the divine beings who showed up at their tent flap. The three beings around a table also symbolize our the Christian view of God as Beings in Relation - a Trinity. Note that there's room in the icon for the observer - for you and for me. There's space at the table, to join in holy conversation, to be part of the "family" of God. Knowing we're members of the household of God thus changes the way we see ourselves, the way we treat one another, and the way we live in God's world. See you in worship! Mission "Buy a Brick" in Support of Habitat for Humanity: As a member of "United Churches," we are helping to sponsor the rehabilitation of a house through Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity. The cost of this sponsorship is $100,000. Each member church donates $5,000 (our donation comes from mission funds), but each church does additional fundraising to meet the goal. The way each of us can help meet the goal is to "buy a brick." The "Buy a Brick" display will be in fellowship hall most Sundays following worship. If you would like to support Habitat with your hands, there are many opportunities to work on-site. There are a limited number of "open spots" on many Saturdays. There is also a special need for volunteers who can work on-site on weekdays. A Habitat workday is 8:15-3:45 (with breaks for snack and lunch!). You can see the work calendar by registering online at chesapeakehfh.org/volunteer and using the "join codes" UC09 and CPC09 (last two digits of each are numeric). If you sign up and receive confirmation or waitlist status, please forward to barbararice at mailstation.com. You may also email or call me at 410-281-2189 (or catch me on a Sunday after worship!) for any questions or help. Thanks so much for your support and involvement. With the exception of Mr. Kimura, the artists featured are women, including Denee Barr, Rachel Coleman, Kim Parr, Rebecca Weber, Margaret Scott, Roxie Munro, Doreen Starling, Lora Robertson, Kathy Taylor, and Virginia Bates. The artists range in age from the 30s to the 80s, so the individual and collective experience is rich and varied. The show will run through August 1. A Glimpse Into Our Past Question: The June 10, 1928, church bulletin listed "a meeting of Sunday School teachers and officers" as one of the meetings for the coming week. At what unusual time was the meeting scheduled to start? Answer: 9 p.m.! Evidently the late starting time was due to the Midweek Prayer Meeting that was held on Wednesday at 8 p.m. Very likely at least some of the teachers would be going to both meetings. (Note: The prayer Meeting sounds intriguing. It was to be a discussion of the subject "through enchanted ground and across the dark river" from Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress." June 8, 2009 So, what do you do if you are the leader of a congregation that is acting out of its anxiety, rather than acting in service to its mission? Anxiety is contagious; let one or two people unleash their anxiety and it won?t be long before it has a ripple effect on the congregation. The effects of anxiety on human thinking and behavior are both observable and predictable. Anxiety represses human functioning by decreasing our capacity to learn, replacing our curiosity with a demand for certainty and stiffening our positions over and against one another. Here are ten simple steps to help reduce anxiety in your congregation. 1. Listen. Active listening (in which one offers feedback for both the content and the emotion that?s expressed) provides a reflective container for the healthy person to restore equilibrium. 2. Remind people of the conger-gation?s mission and vision. Anxiety can cause people to make decisions out of short term focus. Invite members to focus on the bigger picture by re-valuating ?who are we and what is God calling us to do or become.? 3. Set clear, attainable goals and then encourage members as they set about accomplishing those goals. Anxious people need to be reminded of their capacity for problem solving. 4. Talk about what hasn?t changed and isn?t likely to change. When the world seems to be falling apart it is easy to be convinced that congre-gational life as we have known it is disappearing. 5. Invite people to tell stories about a time when they felt that the conger-gation embodied everything it was supposed to be. It?s a way to remind people of who they are when they are acting out of their best selves. 6. Weave the core values of the church into your everyday conver-sation. Referencing core values helps people remain grounded. 7. Invite people to talk about challenges by describing the current situation and the ideal outcome to the situation in language that promotes growth and discovery. 8. Find a biblical metaphor that exemplifies the courage and honor that you want your congregation to exhibit in a challenging moment; and, use it in a variety of contexts to illustrate how the congregation might find deeper meaning and purpose in their circumstance. 9. Invite your leaders into prayer. When you invite your leadership group to pray (before, during, or after decision making) the act of prayer itself creates sacred space for anxiety to dissipate. 10. Take active steps to manage your own anxiety and to remain non-anxious in your own leadership. Remind yourself of who you are, what you stand for and what your limits are. Seek support outside of your congregation, if necessary. Adapted from ?10 Things You Can Do Right Now to Reduce Anxiety in Your Congregation,? by Susan Beaumont. Alban Institute. Message-ID: <00c601c9eacf$b4178560$1c469020$@org> Celebration Brunch June 14 Worship begins at 9:30 a.m. in Fellowship Hall 07.jpg Groundbreaking Ceremony after worship, June 7, 2008. This Sunday we will give thanks to God as we bring our Growing in God's Grace Capital Campaign to a close at the end of June and commemorate the completion (for the most part) of the renovations that began last May/June. This is a major milestone in the church's history and there's cause to celebrate! During worship we will acknowledge everyone who had a role to play on the capital campaign planning team back in 2006, along with members of the Building Projects Committee who guided us through the renovation process. And we will recognize - YOU - the members and friends of the church who helped us realize our goals. After the closing hymn we'll gather on the new porch and ramp for a photo to mark the day, join in the benediction, and then share in a special brunch on the front lawn to celebrate, toast, and give thanks for our progress in making our church a more accessible, welcoming, and hospitable place. Members, Paul & Rebecca Dongarra, will be preparing the brunch, joined by a team of members of the congregation who will help host the event. Child care will be provided throughout the brunch. "Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree." Martin Luther (1483-1546) "All growth is a leap in the dark, a spontaneous, unpremeditated act without benefit of experience." Henry Miller (1891-1980) Scripture: Psalm 20 & Mark 4:26-34 Sermon: Growing in God's Grace Tiny seeds -faithfully sown -yield enormous growth. This the way Jesus describes kingdom living in Mark 4. This is what Jesus had in mind when he said, "Come, follow me." As a congregation, we have received, I believe, a glimpse of what the kingdom is like. We know the truth of this text. On Sunday we will give thanks to God as we bring our Growing in God's Grace Capital Campaign to a close at the end of June and commemorate the completion (for the most part) of the renovations that began last May/June. Come join us! 1. Camp Creation MiniVBS will meet on Wednesday and Thursday, June 24 and 25, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Dinner is included. We welcome church families & friends to this event for entering (fall 2009) K through 5th graders. Care for preschool children is available for participating families. 2. Discovery Canyon is our annual co-sponsored VBS for ages 3 and up at Hope Presbyterian Church, July 27-31, from 9:00 a.m. to Noon. We have lots of eager volunteers, but are still seeking part-time or full-time craft leaders. Both VBS programs feature Bible stories, music, crafts, activities and more. They're a fun way to learn and play and grow together. Registration forms are available in today's announcements, from the church office, or on the CE table in the education wing hallway. Get to Know our Youngest Presbyterians: Volunteers are needed in the cribbery and 3-5 year old room during church service. We're looking for the parents who use this service and for any interested church members who want to donate even a few Sundays per year to care for these wonderful young babies and children. To volunteer for the July 2009 through June 2010 schedule, please contact Melissa Lambdin at melissa_lambdin at yahoo.com or at 410-747-5653. Thank you! Thanks so much for your support and involvement. Barbara Rice for the Mission Committee Stewardship Give Before You Go: As last weekend's Strawberry Festival signals, summer with its schedule changes is here at Catonsville Presbyterian (services at 9:30, no Christian Education, reduced committee meetings), and many families often adjust their Sunday schedules to balance travel, vacation, and summer camp. This note serves as a gentle reminder to - give before you go. Please remember CPC while you are away this summer. Catonsville Presbyterian Church continues to do God's work locally and in the world; it makes a difference in people's lives all year long, and your regular giving (pledged or unpledged) all year long supports that work. Regular church expenses (salaries and utilities, for examples) also continue regardless of the season. The Holy Spirit gave the disciples the vision and energy to form the church; while serving the church, we feel that energy and are encouraged. As you move to your summer schedule, I hope this summer brings you a sense of peace and renewal, and I thank you in advance for your prayerful consideration as you remember to give before you go. One way to avoid falling behind with your pledged or unpledged giving, whether over the summer or in general, is to sign up for Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) through Hubbard Press, a PC(USA) affiliate. At no charge to you, the amount of your monthly giving will automatically transfer on the 20th of the month from your account to the church's account. Simply complete the form printed in this section, attach a voided check, and return it to the church office marked to the attention of the Stewardship Committee. Then you will have taken care of giving before you go for this summer and into the future! Peter Green, Chair, Stewardship Committee The 2009 Per Capita is $30.41 for each member. To date, we have received $3,434.00. Per Capita is an assessment paid to the Presbyterian Church (USA) based on church membership. Per Capita is for administrative expenses of the Presbytery of Baltimore, the Synod of the Mid-Atlantic, and the General Assembly. The centerpiece of three illustrated poems represents a nearly spontaneous collaboration by writer Kay Weeks of Ellicott City and internationally acclaimed Brooklyn, New York, artist, Hiroshi Kimura. Sunday Parking Please keep in mind that the small lot that faces Frederick Road is restricted to parking for the handicapped on Sundays. Please drive slowly through the lot and on the driveway along Beechwood Avenue. Thank you for your consideration. June 15, 2009 Interfaith Service of Witness & Prayer for Health Care People of faith across the nation ? including members of our Presbytery and larger association of Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) ? have joined We Believe Together, a coalition to promote faithful reform in our health care system. Touted as the largest faith mobilization EVER for health care reform, proponents of this coalition for affordable healthcare invite you to participate in an Interfaith Service of Witness and Prayer for Health Care for All on Wednesday, June 24th at the National Religious Leaders on Freedom Plaza (Pennsylvania Ave at 13th Street) in Washington, DC. The coalition will call upon Congress to adopt health care legislation that embraces values of compassion, common good and shared responsibility. As it prepares to gather advocates for the rally, the coalition has put forth the following Statement of Interfaith Principles for Health Care for All: We believe together in a health care future that is grounded in the sacred bonds of our common humanity, defined by compassion, especially for those who are most vulnerable, and reflective of faithful stewardship of our abundant health care resources. As people of faith, inspired by shared values from our sacred texts, we envision a society where each person is afforded health, wholeness, and human dignity. We will measure legislative proposals by their capacity to move us toward a health care future that is: ? Inclusive, offering a guarantee of health care for every person regardless of individual circumstances. ? Accessible, eliminating all barriers to the care which contributes to our health and wholeness as individuals and as a society. ? Affordable, ensuring that we use our abundant health care resources effectively, efficiently, and equitably. ? Accountable, calling for shared individual and institutional responsibility in a system of timely, quality and safe care that treats body, mind and spirit. On Wednesday, health care advocates will gather at 4pm at the plaza for a health fair and, later, listen to speeches from Rev. Dr. James A Forbes, Pastor Emeritus, The Riverside Church; Rabbi David Saperstein, Religious Action Center, Reform Judaism; and, Dr. Sayyid Syeed, Islamic Society of North America. Art Show Opens Today A Line in Time opens with a reception in the Let There be Art gallery in the library from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This show highlights line as language, line as art, and line as timeline. The centerpiece of three illustrated poems represents a nearly spontaneous collaboration by writer Kay Weeks of Ellicott City and internationally acclaimed Brooklyn, New York, artist, Hiroshi Kimura. The show runs through August 1. Sunday Parking Please keep in mind that the small lot that faces Frederick Road is restricted to parking for the handicapped on Sundays. Please drive slowly through the lot and on the driveway along Beechwood Avenue. Thank you for your consideration. Eagle Scout Project Have you noticed the newly landscaped areas? The Boy Scouts, led by Travis Ryan and his mentor, Tim Molony, completed his impressive Eagle project adjacent to the church house. Nearly $1500 in plants and materials were donated by nurseries and landscape companies, and the scouts provided the labor. Also, the Brownie troop planted the flower bed next to the new stairway leading to the side door. They supplied the plants and labor as well. The results of both efforts are beautiful and improve the grounds of our church. Be sure to have a look at each, and to give a big "Thank you!" to anyone you know that was involved in the projects. A Glimpse Into Our Past Question: The June 22, 1924, church bulletin had these directions for the Men's Bible Class: "On Monday afternoon at 1:30 P.M. automobiles will meet the men of this church at the north side of Hanover Street Bridge." Why were they to meet there? Answer: The announcement continues, "to take all who can go for an afternoon and evening of real fun. The committee is providing food for all. The outing will be held at Joyce's on the Severn. June 23, 2009 Marital Education Workshop to Benefit Presbytery Members Many of us can recall the end of a marriage or committed relationship; although, some may not have felt the tremor of it failing until the split occurred. Even so -broken marital bonds not only fracture the spirits of those at the epicenter of a domestic conflict but greatly impact family and friends who surround them. In support of healthy relationships, the Pastoral Counseling Services of Maryland (PCSM) has collaborated with the Presbytery of Baltimore through a mission partnership grant to offer a free marital education workshop to eight couples selected from churches within the Presbytery. The workshop, "For Better or For Worse," a prelude to a broader marital education program, will be held 9am to 4pm on Saturday, September 12th. According to Karen S. Conner, a licensed clinical therapist for PCSM, poor communication and feelings of alienation are frequent complaints for couples at the verge of separation or divorce. Considering three out of five marriages in the U.S. end in divorce, she said, "we sorely need a program that ensures that marital vows, once made, endure to the enrichment of the individual as well as the couple that made them." The "For Better or For Worse" workshop offers couples tools to strengthen their relationships by focusing on how individuality affects a marriage. Couples will also explore communication styles, problem solving, relationship expectations and "baggage" from past relationships. PCSM requests pastors' support in identifying couples who would benefit from this free, one day educational workshop. Participants must be selected by August 1st. Their evaluation of workshop will be used to finalize the program that will be offered several tines a year throughout the Presbytery and wider community. PCSM currently offers general counseling services at Harundale, Northminster and First of Bel Air Presbyterian churches. For details about "For Better or For Worse" workshop or PCSM, call Karen S. In it, we witness two people -- a nameless woman and Jairus, a leader in the synagogue -- who come to Jesus in desperation and fear, both trusting in Jesus' power to heal and to save. The text raises a lot of questions for us: What does it mean for Jesus to say, "Your faith has made you well?" Does our healing rely on our own faith? What do we make of these words of Jesus, "Do not fear, only believe." Is that a comfort, or a challenge? Both the nameless woman and Jairus took a risk - a risk of faith. We know that we, too, come to Jesus asking for healing, each of us hoping to participate in miracles of our own. Trusting in the mercy and faithfulness of God, let us encounter the love and the power of Christ together. Stewardship Give Before You Go: Summer, with its schedule changes, is here at Catonsville Presbyterian (services at 9:30, no Christian Education, reduced committee meetings), and many families often adjust their Sunday schedules to balance travel, vacation, and summer camp. June 29, 2009 Sexual Misconduct Training Reinforces Healthy Boundaries in Church Relationships In recent years, the problem of sexual misconduct by clergy and other religious leaders has repeatedly surfaced in the media and the courts. Sexual abuse in a ministerial relationship occurs when a religious leader uses a congregant (parishioner/student/disciple) to meet his or her personal needs and crosses sexual and emotional boundaries. Trust is betrayed; boundaries are violated; body and soul are broken. Victims of such abuse often feel abandoned by God; and, the harm caused can last a lifetime. National experts advise that no religious group is immune to this problem; and, unfortunately, religious institutions across the scope have not always responded to support victims and hold perpetrators accountable. In response to this issue, the Presbytery of Baltimore recently approved measures to reinforce its Sexual Misconduct Policy by providing training for clergy and other church leaders. In May, two dozens participants gathered for a presentation on Healthy Boundaries. The workshop provided guidance to reduce incidences of clergy abuse and enhance appropriate relationships between religious leaders and their congregants. Text Box: Maintaining Healthy Boundaries * Find healthful ways to meet your needs other than by the people you serve. * Faced with question-able circumstances, ask: ?Would I be comfortable if all my acquaintances knew I was doing this??* Establish a system of accountability. Arrange to meet regularly with a spiritual director, teacher or colleague with whom you can speak honestly. * Understand that boundaries are not always easy to discern and that there are often no clear guide-lines when confronted with an issue. Reflecting on the training, Rev. Jack Carlson, an ordained minister and pastoral counselor, said ?It is important for pastors to be reminded of the weighty responsibilities that are ours, not just in maintaining appropriate sexual boundaries, but also in considering boundaries related to friendship in the parish, self-care, and financial matters.? Another participant, Rev. Tom Morgan, pastor of Presbyterian congregations at Barton and Lonaconing, said he was intrigued to learn how a ?lack of pastoral self-care? can lead one to make unhealthy decisions in ministry. Although the Healthy Boundaries workshop is mandated for ordained clergy, certified Christian educators and commissioned lay pastors; the Sexual Misconduct Response Team strongly encourages elders to attend the training, as well. ?It has been an invaluable experience to participate in the Healthy Boundaries workshop, ?said Elder Edie Cleaves, a SMRT member. She added that elders trained to recognize signs of misconduct ?can better manage their leadership within the congregation and foster healthy congregational life.? The next workshop will be held 9am-4pm, Oct. 22nd (place, TBA). To register, email SMRT Chair, Jan Trammell-Savin at anmhara at comcast.net or send a $65 check payable to the Presbytery along with a request to attend the training.
