Bob Shumaker, Finance Committee Backpacks for Success 2009 The Board of Deacons is kicking off our Backpacks for Success campaign in partnership with the Catonsville Emergency Food Ministries (CEFM). I know that children are loathe to hear about this in July, but it is getting close to that time again to start looking for bargains on backpacks and school supplies. For poor families, however, there are often no "back to school" shopping safaris, as the cost for most basic school supplies is beyond their reach. To fill the void, the deacons will be collecting new school supplies for Catonsville's most needy children. CEFM has promised ninety families that it will fill their children's backpacks with new school supplies. To help CEFM honor that commitment, we, as a congregation, are committed to filling ten backpacks. We have agreed to sponsor one high school, four middle school, and five primary school children. July 7, 2009 Can Social Media Help Reform the Presbyterian Church? ? by Bruce Reyes-Chow, Moderator 218th General Assembly, Presbyterian Church of U.S.A. Over the past few years I have become more and more convinced that if the church hopes to reach out to folks in meaningful and effective ways, we MUST embrace the power of social media . Shocker I know. However, with more folks using the internet to find all of the things they need in life - doctors, schools, support groups, social gatherings - shouldn't we, as the church, be there too? Of course, word of mouth and personal invitations will always have a place, but the ways in which the internet allows folks to do more research about all of life's needs, including a place of spiritual growth, must not be ignored. At Mission Bay Community Church in San Francisco, CA ? where I serve as pastor ?most visitors already know far more about us than we know about them. They read our staff and members blogs, our Yelp Reviews, our website so they tend to know far more than they could learn in an initial face-to-face visit. In fact, unless they contact us beforehand, they have ALL the power in the relationship because they have a disproportionate amount of information. How awesome and anxiety reducing is that? Visitors arrive and immediately recognize people, and the worship setting. They tend to feel far more at home than if it were their first time visiting. More importantly, an effective social media presence allows us to let folks know who we are - culturally, theologically, and stylistically - and gives folks the chance to see if we are consistent in our message and if our beliefs play out in our actions. Nothing worse than getting tricked into visiting a church by a smooth online presence and then finding out the old bait-n-switch has been played on you. And since it is safe to assume folks do not choose a church for negative reasons, all the hopes and expectations turn out to be true. So how do you test this? * Ask visitors how they found your church and what compelled them to visit. * Find out where services in your community are advertised and add your church. * Ask church members as well as outsiders for feedback about your church website and methods of communication. * Consider shifting communication resources. Instead of investing in a telephone book listing, set up a blog; upgrade your website; log on to Face Book, tweet on Twitter, upload your mission video on YouTube; podcast your worship service; or form a bible study group on Skype or Gotomeeting.com. Whatever we do, we cannot simply ignore the power that social media gives to the future health and growth of the church. For poor families, however, there are often no ?back to school? shopping safaris, as the cost for most basic school supplies is beyond their reach. To fill the void, the deacons will be collecting new school supplies for Catonsville?s most needy children. CEFM has promised ninety families that it will fill their children?s backpacks with new school supplies. To help CEFM honor that commitment, we, as a congregation, are committed to filling ten backpacks. We have agreed to sponsor one high school, four middle school, and five primary school children. July 27, 2009 by Terry Schoener MOON WALKING THROUGH LIFE Recently, the big story has not been on healthcare legislation, nuclear proliferation or the Supreme Court nomination ? but, on the death of Michael Jackson. I view his life as a sad story of a man who never got to be a boy; a Peter Pan who at best was inappropriate with children; who was a singer, songwriter, dancer. (I remember when he first did the ?moonwalk,? that illusion of walking forward but actually moving backwards. I tried to learn how to do that thinking that if I could cross the chancel like that on Sunday morning church growth would be assured!) With his death the entertainment industry and his followers have gone to great lengths to venerate Jackson as a ?Pop Saint?. It?s puzzling why others who don?t make billions of dollars but contribute more substantially to the human enterprise ? such as, teachers, volunteers, organ donors, parents, pastors and so many others ? aren?t venerated more. Even so, last week commemorated a more important ?moon walk:? Apollo 11 rose from the Earth 40 years ago. I remember staying up very late that night, then waking my kids to see the grainy pictures of the moon landing and hear the words: ?One small step for man; one giant leap for mankind.? And what a leap that moonwalk was! As humankind, we had persuaded ourselves of our importance by assuming we dwelt at the center of the universe; it all circled around us. But in our lifetime, with Armstrong and Aldrin walking on another celestial body, it has become clear that we live on a medium sized planet circling an average star, in one of the billions of galaxies that lace the cosmos. If we have any glory or honor it is not intrinsic but imputed, not ours because we declare ourselves worthy of glory and honor but because SOMEONE decided to bring us into being and to love us. Psalm 8 asks: ?What are human beings that you are mindful of them?? In the following verse the psalmist answers himself, ?. . . you have made them a little lower than God, and crowned them with glory and honor.? And still we moonwalk, spacewalk, send interplanetary probes, split subatomic particles and unravel the human genome enticed by our wonder at the astonishing creation of God. Yet it is how we ?earth walk? and squint to see that ? .city that has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of the Lord is its light,? that is our calling. Barbara Rice for the Mission Committee Backpacks for Success 2009 The Board of Deacons is kicking off our Backpacks for Success campaign in partnership with the Catonsville Emergency Food Ministries (CEFM). I know that children are loathe to hear about this right now, but it is getting close to that time again to start looking for bargains on backpacks and school supplies. For poor families, however, there are often no "back to school" shopping safaris, as the cost for most basic school supplies is beyond their reach. To fill the void, the deacons will be collecting new school supplies for Catonsville's most needy children. CEFM has promised ninety families that it will fill their children's backpacks with new school supplies. To help CEFM honor that commitment, we, as a congregation, are committed to filling ten backpacks. We have agreed to sponsor one high school, four middle school, and five primary school children. For those who do not wish to shop for their donation, a financial donation will be greatly welcomed. Please make checks payable to CPC, and specify "Backpacks for Success" on the envelope memo line. A Glimpse Into Our Past Question: Starting in August 1926, the front page of our church bulletin listed "one minister abroad" (Rev. William Clark), and two "foreign ministers" (Dr. H. Dabney Kerr, M.D., and Dr. Arthur R. Knipp, Ph.D.). All three men were working in one country. What country? Answer: China: Rev. Clark was in Changsha, Dr. Kerr was in Peking, and Dr. Knipp was in Canton. Community News Presbytery Sponsors Marital Education Workshop: Volunteers are needed to participate in a pilot workshop for a new program for strengthening marriages and committed relationships. This will be offered on Saturday, September 12, from 9a.m. to 4 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Cockeysville. CPC has been asked to invite a couple from our congregation to participate.
