Shine! For your light has come, And the glory of the LORD is risen upon you. Isaiah 60:1 _________________________________________ Text: Ecclesiastes 3:1-8; Matthew 2:1-12 Dear Friends: This is a New Year! Come and join us in worship this Sunday as we reflect on the challenges and blessings of the year just past, and offer prayers of hope and thanksgiving for the year to come. We are guided by God's Light, invited to come and gather joyously around the table of Jesus Christ. Come and worship! Come and worship! Worship Christ, the newborn King! See you Sunday - Dorothy ".this will be a New Year. It may mark the end of relationships of many years' accumulation. It may mean the first encounter with stark tragedy or radical illness or the first quaffing of the cup of bitterness. .It may mean an encounter with God on the lonely road or the hearing of one's name called by Him, high above the noise and din of the surrounding traffic. And when the call is answered, the life becomes invaded by smiling energies never before released, felt or experienced. In whatever sense this year is a New Year for you, may the moment find you eager and unafraid, ready to take it by the hand with joy and gratitude." Thanks, Shirley Winters A Glimpse Into Our Past During 2009, our "Glimpses Into Our Past" items will be from the bound copies of our church bulletins (dating back to 1914) and from Mrs. Knipp's and Dr. Zimmerman's histories of CPC. They will be in the form of questions and answers. Learn about our church's history: have we changed much? not at all? Question: In what year was the following quote written? It was part of a message from one of our pastors: "We have begun a New Year. All over the Western World, the old year has ended and the New Year has begun. This church also begins a new year. Already distinguished by many years of truly remarkable progress and service, it now enters upon yet another year of its history. It is probable that few churches enjoy a more favored location and with it, greater opportunities for growth and usefulness than this one does. Certainly at no time has there been greater need for the Christian truth in the life of both the individual and society." Answer: The "New Year" was 1938, and the minister was Rev. John Bright, out third pastor; but doesn't it sound timely? January 6??, 2009 WAYS TO PRAY: Integrating Spirituality in Church Committee Meetings During the perfunctory church meeting, book-end prayer traditionally separates the spiritual aspects of the meeting from the business at hand - the work of the church based on parliamentary rules, ordered by a litany of reports with recommendations and decisions voted by majority rule. However, if we redefine the activity of the people of God serving on church committees as worshipful work, then prayer will no longer be relegated to a before and after activity. Instead, it will saturate the agenda and thread its way throughout the meeting, contends author Charles Olsen in his book, Transforming Church Boards into Communities of Spiritual Leaders. Olsen offers ways many church committees are doing meetings differently and discovering ways to allow prayer to permeate the work of the committee. Here are several ways: Frame the Agenda with Prayer Use opening and closing prayers that relate to the agenda of the meeting. The invocation might focus on the image of God and create an openness to and awareness of the Spirit's presence and leading. The closing prayer might be a thankful offertory for the work of the board, lifted to God. Glean for Prayer Just as the harvest seed is gleaned from chaff and straw, we, too might separate out items for prayer during committee meetings. During the meeting, certain members may be assigned to note items in need of thanks giving; opportunities for intercession in the church or wider world; prayers of petition; and, praise of the work of the Spirit of God in our lives. Offer Prayers of Confession Sometimes worship can include scripture and confession that cover not only errors and sins but also weariness, frustration, confusion, elation, discipline. For example, Jesus' prayer for his friends and disciples (John 17) contains a cluster of specific petitions, one of which may be appropriate for your committee's current situation. Acknowledge Subliminal Prayer Prayer may be ceaseless and subliminal, even when we engage in active work or deliberation. Old desert saints wanted to pray without ceasing, so they attached Jesus' prayer ("Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy upon me, a sinner") to the rising and falling of their breath. After a while, the prayer carries the breath without one's thinking about it! Meetings Are Worship Resistance to infusing the work of a committee with prayer tends to come from the conviction that "there is a place for everything and everything should be in its place"; that worship belongs to Sunday and sanctuary and prayer belongs to worship. The only meeting rule should be "meetings are worship." All else will flow to and from that fountain. Then we can drink from its fullness! French Confession (1559), written by John Calvin (1509-1564). Lectionary Texts: Genesis 1: 1-5 & Mark 1: 4-11 Sermon: The Waters of New Creation We often associate baptism as initiation into the membership of the church. But how could that have been true for Jesus, who wasn't baptized into a church (it didn't exist at that time)? Baptism for him is more about identification, instead of initiation. It has to do with identity - his identity as the son of God. So let's shine this insight on our self-understanding of being baptized. What do we discover about ourselves through our baptism? After the sermon, we will we affirm our baptismal vows, reclaim the meaning of baptism for our lives, and process to the font to remember again who and whose we are. See you in worship this Sunday! January 13??, 2009 Presbyterians in Annapolis ?To think of doing away (with civil government) is outrageous barbarity. Its function among men is no less than that of bread, water, sun and air; indeed, its place of honor is far more excellent.? ~John Calvin, Institutes of the Christian Religion To have a voice at the table of state government gives us an important entrance into seeking social justice for all. On Monday, February 9th, members of the Presbytery of Baltimore will once again have an opportunity to practice this very important aspect of our faith during the Third Annual Presbyterians in Annapolis Day. On that day, Presbyterians young and old will assemble at 4pm at the Naval Academy Stadium Parking and travel by shuttle bus to Lawyer?s Mall near the Maryland State House, where legislators convene this week for the Maryland General Assembly?s 426th session. Then we?ll tour the legislative chambers, office buildings and public galleries via an underground tunnel system. Later, the group will gather for a ?baked potato? dinner in the Montgomery Delegation Room and listen to advocacy presentations from the Rev. Bill Hathaway of First Presbyterian Church of Annapolis and Leslie Wood of PC(USA)?s Washington Office. Those who wish to visit elected officials at that time may arrange to do so with the assistance of Julie Erickson, the Presbytery?s Director of Public Policy. Under Julie?s direction, the Presbytery retains a strong advocate presence in Annapolis ? both through the active interest and support of our members and our collaboration with other faith-based advocates who work to bring about justice. About twelve years ago, an advocate-minded group of Presbyterian determined that as a people of faith, we are held accountable for how we treat those less fortunate than ourselves. The group helped to establish an office of public policy as an outreach of the Presbytery?s Peace and Justice Committee; and, since then, the Presbytery worked through that office to bring about equality and justice to all of God?s children in Maryland. As such, the Legislative Task Force of the Peace and Justice committee has targeted the following advocacy items for focus during the 2009 Maryland General Assembly: ? Repeal of the Death Penalty; ? Care of Creation issues, including the Global Warming Solutions Act and maintenance of RGGI Funding for weatherization of rental homes; ? Homeless/housing and maintenance of funding; ? Health Care for All (Plan for 2008). To register for Presbyterians in Annapolis Day, call Julie Erickson at 410.370.8245 or email her at jerickson at baltimorepresbytery.org. Once it is fixed (hopefully tomorrow, Saturday), we will send out the Life in Community Enewsletter. The Adult Education offering at 9:00 a.m. in the library will continue our exploration of why we worship the way we do as Christians and as Presbyterians. After worship, in the library, I'll be providing an overview of some of the overtures that will be considered by Baltimore Presbytery when it meets this Thursday at the church (January 22, at 1:00 p.m.). _______________________ Worship Preview Second Sunday in Ordinary Time/ January 18, 2009 Reception of New Members Lectionary Readings:? 1 Samuel 3: 1-15 & John 1: 43-51 Sermon:? Summoned to a Larger Life ?Follow me.?? ?You will see great things than these.?? Both of these statements from John's gospel, if you think about, are invitations to step into a new world.? Jesus? is holding out for them an alternate way of living, inviting them to let go of one way of being in order to embrace a new way.? And they?re willing to go where he leads because of they trust him to take them there.? They?re free to risk, to step out because they?ve received a glimpse of who stands before them and summons them to a larger life.? Jesus? call to us, although demanding, is not given just to make our lives difficult.? I think it?s extended to every one of20us because Jesus knows us, like he knew Nathanael; he knows that we were created for a larger life.? We really want to be summoned. January 20??, 2009 Common Ground: Presbytery Welcomes Middle East Interfaith Listening Team ?We are willing to extend a hand, if you are willing to unclench your fist.? ~President Barack H. Obama, Inaugural Speech 2009 Rev. Dr. Maqsood Kamil Khurram Dastgir Khan As our nation today welcomes into office President Barack H. Obama, let us pray that the promise of hope, cooperation, peace and goodwill heralded by this new administration is applied not only to the resolution of our own devastating domestic problems ? but, also to the strife that exists in lands beyond our borders. Taking up this challenge within our church, the Presbytery of Baltimore will host a Middle East Interfaith Listening Team to promote understanding among Abrahamic faiths (Jewish, Christian, Muslim) in an effort to help resolve religious violence and terrorism. The Interfaith Listening Team of Rev. Dr. Maqsood Kamil, executive secretary of the Presbyterian Church of Pakistan, and Mr. Khurram Dastgir Khan, elected member of Pakistan?s National Parliament from the Muslim League Party will visit congregations in our presbytery from Feb. 13th ? 17th during a national tour sponsored by PC(USA). The Interfaith Listening Team provides an opportunity to arm ourselves with the skills to promote such nonviolent direct action. The men will talk about their experiences, difficulties and the solutions that enable them to understand and work together in spite of their religious beliefs: one rooted in the Christian faith and the other in the teachings of Islam. Neither man is a professionally trained peacemaker but both extol the principles of peace through their own faithful commitments. Arranged through the denominational offices of the PC(USA), the International Peacemakers Program has existed since 1988. International Peacemakers are leaders who are engaged in peacemaking in their own areas of the world. They are invited to visit with Presbyterians in the United States to help us understand the peace and justice concerns of others around the world. Ultimately, it is hoped that this shared experience will translate into a better understanding of the peace and justice issues in our own communities. We are in need of at least two ringers to make the ensemble complete. No previous bell-ringing experience is needed!...although it is helpful to know how to read music. Rehearsals are on Thurdsays, 6:30 - 7:30 pm, and worship performances occur about every 4 to 6 weeks. The Handbell Choir is a fun group of individuals, and it's a great way to be more involved in worship on a regular basis. Please contact Greg Knauf at gwknauf at verizon.net or tell a current ringer or choir member if you are interested. We would like to begin rehearsals by Thursday, February 19. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Chesterton (1874-1936), What's Wrong with the World (1910) Scripture: Jonah 3:1-5 & Mark 1: 14-20 Sermon: Beyond Business as Usual We have perhaps been misled for too long by images in illustrated Bibles or those old church school flannel-graphs that depict the bucolic life of fisherman like Andrew, Simon, James, and John, lazily spending the day on the water, waiting for a good catch. We have to remove these images. We also have to set aside the notion that when Jesus calls them to become "fishers of men," he's isn't granting them instant evangelist status, or calling them to "catch" souls or save souls, or trying to give them a better job to do because they were peasants and really didn't have a future. The "hooking of fish" is a metaphor with deep roots in the Old Testament, with a specific meaning. Jesus has something very particular in mind when he invites us to go fishing with him. Since then we have been without power, internet access, and heat.? We're hoping that power will be restored today, but we're not sure.? In the meantime, the Church House is closed with no one is staffing the office (although Bob Ashton is around).? Once we have power restored, we will let you know.? Dell Electric will be installing a temporary power supply, probably tomorrow. But we're not exactly sure at this point, given the present weather conditions. And, even if the power does comes back tomorrow, we probably won't have internet service. Verizon seems to think that FIOS has already been installed (which it hasn't), so they disconnected our DSL service! Here are some things you need to know: The Thursday morning Bible study will be canceled tomorrow. We will resume on February 5 and finish up the study on February 19th. All meetings scheduled in the Church House tomorrow will need to be rescheduled next week. The Suburban Pastoral Counseling Center at the Beechwood location will be closed for the rest of the week. We are seriously considering moving the Annual Congregation Meeting, scheduled for this Sunday, to the following week, February 8th. We simply won't have enough time this week to assemble the docket and reports for the meeting, as well as put the bulletin together for worship. A decision will be made in the next day or so. We know that there's a concert scheduled for the sanctuary on February 8th, which would require us to meet in the fellowship hall after worship. The Souper Bowl Luncheon will be still take place after worship on February 1. If there's a pastoral need/crisis, please call me at home (410-448-1071) or Dorothy Boulton at home (410-884-2964). January 26?, 2009 Brother John Taiz? of France ?Making Room for Wholeness? Baltimore?s first Pilgrimage of Trust The Ecumenical Community of Greater Baltimore welcomes Brother John of the Taiz? Community of France as he prepares to lead the first Pilgrimage of Trust in Baltimore City. The pilgrimage event ? entitled Making Room for Wholeness, held February 27th-28th ? invites participants to share meals and pray together during a weekend of reflection. Hosted by St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Govans, the pilgrimage event is expected to draw scores of worshippers from more than ten church communities representing six Christian denominations in the Baltimore Metropolitan area ? as well as, those attending St. Mary?s Seminary and Ecumenical Institute of Theology. The event marks the beginning of a spiritual pilgrimage of coming together in prayer and seeking for the purpose of coming to know and understand who we are when we stand together before the Source of Compassion. Taiz? was founded in 1940 as a community of peace for refugees from WWII. The community seeks to bring about reconciliation and to help others grow in the trust of God. Today, the Taiz? community has more than 100 brothers from various Christian denominations, living in France, Brazil, Senegal and South Korea. As part of their mission, the brothers of Taiz? accompany young people from around the world in a spirit of peace, reconciliation and openness to others. They aim to bring youth together to empower, enliven and enrich their spirit for change. Since the 1970s, the community has organized meetings on every continent as part its ?Pilgrimage of Trust on Earth;? and, each year, 100,000 young people from around the world spend a week at Taiz?. Brother John will speak to us Friday and Saturday from Brother Alois? ?Letter from Kenya? which was distributed at a Taiz? meeting in Brussels attended by 40,000 Europeans during the Christmas and New Year?s Eve holidays. The letter, now translated into thirty languages, will be the basis of our reflection throughout the weekend. All are welcome to this interdenominational, omni-generational and multicultural gathering for the purpose of breaking down barriers through prayer and common sharing. Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945), Life Together (1954) Text: Acts 2: 41-47 Sermon: Finding Christ in Community "Gather the folks, break the bread, tell the stories." It's at the heart of what we do. It's so simple, really; yet so radical and life-changing. We know this was how the earliest Christians worshipped and what they did when they gathered. One of the most concise descriptions of what happened when believers met is found here in Acts 2, at Pentecost. We'll focus on one word in this text, one of the most beautiful and profound words in the Greek New Testament, that pulls these verses together and the believers together - and, potentially, all of us with them. How should we pray? What is the power of prayer? Are our concerns God's concerns? This one-session Bible study examines Christian prayer from a biblical perspective and from a historical Christian perspective. Led by Kathy Glennan. February 15: What Happens When We Pray? Do you ever wonder about the usefulness of prayer? What actually happens when we pray? What difference will prayer make? This study looks at different views Christians have about prayer, particularly whether prayer just changes the one who prays or whether God is actually affected and might be moved on the basis of our prayer requests. This year's keynote speaker is Diana Butler Bass, Ph.D., - a major figure in Protestant theology and a leader in transforming congregations through witness and practice. Workshops focus on ways churches can discern, heal, worship, seek justice, reclaim hospitality, and more. There is a bookstore, art gallery, lunch, and children's program. Please stop by the Welcome Table in fellowship hall to see the brochure. This event is low cost and family-friendly. A large contingent from CPC always attends. Come join us! Interfaith Listening Event At least six International Listening Team (ILT) events will be brought to the Baltimore from Friday, February 13, through Monday, February 16. The team has a Pakistani Muslim MP, Hon. Khurram Khan, and the Executive Secretary of the Presbyterian Church in Pakistan, Rev. Dr. Maqsood Hamil. Events start on Friday night with evening prayers at 5:30 at the Islamic Society of Baltimore on Johnnycake Road. We will all meet in the parking lot by the walkway to the mosque and be escorted to prayer. This is a great opportunity for women to experience Islamic prayer. Women should dress conservatively for this event and need not cover their hair. Pick up a flier in fellowship hall for a listing of all the scheduled events. Reservations are necessary for all events; please contact Joan Berry at pastorjoan at verizon.net or call 410-207-5300 and leave a message indicating which event and who will be attending by name.
