PEACE SEEKER 2009 AWARD
Bill Galvin?s ministry on behalf of Presbyterian Conscientious Objectors is
a testament to this cause of those who have come to believe that Christian
faith prohibits their participation in war.
?Our culture wants to define conscientious objection as rare . . . [but] we
need to see conscientious objection as the norm ---and support for
atrocities and illegal wars as the extreme. Everyone draws the line
somewhere,? Galvin said in a recent interview.
In recognition of his work, Galvin will receive the Presbyterian Peace
Fellowship 2009 Peace Seeker Award at the 219th General Assembly in
Minneapolis next summer. An active member of the Presbytery and elder at
Hope Presbyterian Church, Galvin has worked to defend and extend the right
to conscientious objection to war for nearly 40 years. He serves as
coordinator for the Center on Conscience and War in Washington DC,
overseeing a national program of counselors, the GI Rights Hotline and other
efforts to support men and women in the armed services who come to believe
that war is contrary to their faith and values.
SEEKING PEACE & JUSTICE
?There is no peace without justice. Wherever there is brokenness, violence,
and injustice the people of God are called to peacemaking.? (W-7.4003)
Across the Presbytery there are moments in everyday lives that bear
extraordinary witness to principles of peace and justice within our
Christian faith.
In June, while visiting El Salvador, a delegation from Brown Memorial Park
Presbyterian Church was confronted with the
death of mission colleague Marcelo
Rivera and its alleged connection to a controversial mining operation. The
delegations? pastor, Rev. Andrew Foster Connors tried to console them from
across the miles; while, here at home, find an explanation for such a brutal
and senseless murder. In a pursuit for truth and justice, Rev. Foster
Connors learned that Rivera had fervently protested deals to allow foreign
countries to extract natural resources from South American mines ? and, in
the wake of his actions, his death held broader implications.
Rev. Foster Connors
?I was not previously aware that the relationships between extractive
industries and governments can result in human rights violations, torture
and death,? said Rev. Foster Connors.? The pastor?s awareness led to
involvement with Publish
What You Pay
(PWYP), a campaign endorsed by the 218th General Assembly (2008) to force
extraction companies to disclose large payments to foreign governments. The
strategy encourages that funds benefit all of the people of the countries
involved.
Rev. Foster Connors took his cause to U.S. Sen. Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD),
who with Sen. Richard Lugar (R-IN) introduced the Energy
Security Through Transparency Act on Sept. 23rd. The
legislation would require all companies listed on U.S. exchanges to disclose
their payments to foreign governments for the extraction of oil, gas and
minerals on a country-by-country basis.
?One of the challenges for the PC(USA), that is so involved in political
issues, is that when something like this happens, you understand that the
flesh and blood advocacy work we do connect with our faith,? Rev. Foster
Connors said.

Dear Friends:
The December Messenger will be going out in the mail this week. We're sorry
for the delay this month.
In the meantime, please find attached the color version of the Messenger -
with photos in full color instead of black and white found in the printed
format. There are some great images of the Steeple replacement project that
took place mid-November.
Thanks,

Advent Candlelighting: Robert, Lois, Benjamin, & Joseph Haman
New Picture (36).bmp
O Wisdom, coming forth from the mouth of the Most High,
Pervading and permeating all creation,
You order all htings with strength and gentleness:
Come now and teach us the way of salvaiotn.
Come, Lord Jesus.
O Antiphons for Advent (8th Century)
Scripture: Malachi 3: 1-4 & Luke 3: 1-6
Sermon: Transformation Required
These texts are the assigned lectionary readings for the second Sunday of
Advent. In Malachi we hear about a messenger who will arrive before the
coming of the Lord. It's a demanding text. In Luke we learn of another
messenger, John the Baptist, who prepared Israel for the coming of the Lord,
the Lord Jesus. Both of these texts refer to the future coming of God and
because Advent means, literally, coming, they offer us some indication of
what's required before the Lord appears.
See you in worship!

December 13 and 20: Images of the Nativity. We are continuing the story of
Jesus' birth through the power of images that we began on the First Sunday
of Advent, November 29. The joy, the wonder, the beauty, the glory of the
nativity has been a welcomed subject for artists since the time of the early
church. We are looking at paintings as a way to visually enter into the
birth narratives. On December 13, Advent III, we'll look at modern and
contemporary renderings, often provocative and abstract. Then, on December
20, Advent IV, we will explore nativity art from across different cultures.

Partners Needed for
Advent Spiritual Practice
Our denominational magazine, Presbyterians Today, offers a unique Advent
opportunity - journaling each day in Advent following a short reflection and
prayer. Fortunately, no skills as a writer or artist are needed: it's simply
an invitation to enter the reflection through writing, drawing, painting,
collage, photography, computer-accessed images ... whatever! I'll provide
the booklet, all you need is a blank book or an empty binder. I'll have
materials available for 10 people. Come see me - let's spend time this
Advent on a journaling adventure. -Dorothy Boulton
A Glimpse Into Our Past
Question: Under the heading "Christmas opportunities," a 1924 church
bulletin said, "Serving from morning until night because she was too proud
to acknowledge that her husband had deserted, Mrs. Bender is now ill from
overwork. The doctor says she must have six months' rest and proper
nourishment before she entirely recovers. ? dollars will pay one month's
rent. Will you help?" How many dollars were needed?
Answer: Ten!

Tri-Presbytery Grant Helps Pastors, Churches Prepare for Transformation
The Board of Pensions recently awarded a $15,000 matching grant to the
Presbytery of Baltimore and two other presbyteries within the Synod of the
Mid-Atlantic who have formed a joint venture to assist pastors of
congregations struggling to seek a greater connection with the community
around them.
The program will provide leadership training and long-term support for
nearly two dozen clergy from Baltimore, New Castle and National Capitol
presbyteries. Each of the presbyteries put up $5,000 to acquire matching
funds from the Board of Pension
to finance the program. An additional $5,000 was awarded to the group
through a second grant from the Speer Trust,
administered by the New Castle Presbytery. The total cost of the two year
program is estimated at $35,000.
According to Rev. Bill Millen, the Presbytery?s Associate Executive
Presbyter, far too many congregations are uncertain about how to live out
their faith in a post modern world. Furthermore, many pastors struggle with
shifts in culture occurring today and how those changes impact the life of a
faith community. The program seeks to strengthen congregations by preparing
clergy and church leaders to become missional, relational and prophetic.
The program offers clergy support through three distinct phases of training:
Phase I provides teaching, coaching and practical exercises to assess both a
pastor?s and/or church?s readiness for transformation; Phase II assists
clergy in recruiting skilled team leaders to guide congregations who are
ready for transformation; and, Phase III will focus on leadership training
and implementing a plan for church transformation. In total, clergy will
receive 130 hours in training and personal development; and, leaders will
receive 48 hours of training.
The program, slated to begin in March and run for two years, employs
Heartwood
LLC (with Ann Philbrick), a national consulting firm that helps cultivate
congregational transformation through leadership development, strategic
planning and training. And, with the program?s guidance, pastors will begin
to understand some of the shifts in culture occurring today and how that
impacts the life of a faith community ? reaching out to others and working
toward the dream of God on earth, Rev. Millen said.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Elaine Schulze, beloved wife of Bob Schulze, mother of Jennifer and Natalie. Elaine had been a very active church member, participating with great love and joy in the soup kitchen ministry in years past. A Service of Witness to the Resurrection is tentatively scheduled for 1:00 pm in the Catonsville Presbyterian Church sanctuary for Saturday, December 19th.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Bob and his family during this time.

contemporary period. We?ll look at artists ? such as, G?r?me, Bouguereau,
Blake, Edward Burne Jones, Arthur Hughes, Henry Tanner, Gaugin, Chagal,
Warhol -- who approach the Christmas message through the lens of
contemporary history and culture. These non-traditional, even provocative

Where We Go From Here: New Church Development
Like a milestone along a winding road, the Presbytery of Baltimore?s New
Church Development program gives us pause to reflect on how far we?ve come
and where the path is yet to lead on our journey to invite others into
communion with God.
Through the years, New Church Development (NCD) has marked steady success
with
St. Andrew?s Presbyterian Church in Mt. Airy. The budding
congregation of over 118 members plans to break ground next year and build
the first Presbyterian church in the nation?s north east in nearly 20 years.
The Presbytery also retains property for a future congregation in New
Market.
However, the path has shifted for other NCDs like Next Generation, which
focused on connecting with the growing number of young adults who are not
part of a church; and, New Imani Community Church in Owings Mills. On
December 1st, the Rev. Ron Johnson, requested that his relationship be
dissolved, effective December 15th. New Imani?s leadership will spend the
next three months discerning whether it will become the Presbytery?s first
fellowship with the leadership of its Commissioned Lay Pastors, Elders Anita
Johnson and Donna Lea or if they will decide to dissolve as a community of
faith.
As Presbyterians we must develop new churches in response to changing
demographics and the increasing number of people who no longer claim a
church home. This month the New Church Development Committee met for the
first time with its consultant
Paul Nixon. Paul has begun dozens of new
churches and the committee will learn from him how others have been able to
give birth to new congregations. One option is to challenge existing
congregations, in partnership with Presbytery, to seed new congregations.
This is how Brown Memorial
Woodbrook was born. The committee anticipates convocation of presbyters to
take place on October 28th, 2010 to explore what God has in mind for us.
Mr. Nixon will also work with New Imani?s and several Spanish-speaking
ministers and congregations to see how we can nurture these young
congregations.
Most of us are saddened by the challenges that both Next Generation and New
Imani have faced. But these experiences have only strengthened our resolve
to continue to plant churches and learn how to nurture them in better ways.
And we look forward to your insight. In the meantime, please keep the good
people of New Imani and Ron Johnson and his family in your prayers.
Blessings,
Peter Nord

Subject: [Members-and-Friends] Images of the Nativity: Nativity in Modern
and Contemporary Art -- Take Two!
Message-ID: <005b01ca7e75$97643280$c62c9780$@org>
Images of the Nativity, 9:00 a.m. in the library.
Last Sunday morning we had several technical glitches that prevented us from
presenting this PowerPoint. (Although we had a really good discussion,
nevertheless.) So, we?re going to try it again! If you couldn?t attend
last week, here?s another opportunity to join in this study.
Advent IV (December 20): The Nativity in Modern and Contemporary Art
New Picture (4).png
Francis Henry Critchley Hinder (1906-1992)
This week Nina Lagervall will guide us in a fasinating tour of two dozen
images from Neo-classicism (mid-18th century/ late-19th century) through to
the contemporary period. We?ll look at artists ? such as, G?r?me,
Bouguereau, Blake, Edward Burne Jones, Arthur Hughes, Henry Tanner, Gaugin,
Chagal, Warhol -- who approach the Christmas message through the lens of
contemporary history and culture. These non-traditional, even provocative
images will allow us to go deeper into the meaning of Christ?s birth.
