August 3, 2009 THE BIG TENT EXPERIENCE CHANNELING TRENDS in the 21st CENTURY This past June I was privileged to attend The Big Tent Event in Atlanta, GA. Ten different organizations of the PC(USA) presented a variety of fascinating workshops ranging from peacemaking to elder training to stewardship. The Big Tent Event numbers among the best conferences I have ever attended. One of the most outstanding workshops that I attended was Leaders for a Changing Church taught by Rodger Nishioka, a professor at Columbia Theological Seminary. Nishioka detailed eight trends for ministry in the 21st Century: 1. From tribal education to immigrant education: as 60% of us were not raised as Presbyterians, the "tribe" needs to think about what it is like to be an "immigrant". 2. From mission "out there" to mission "right here": we are called to radically think globally and act locally. We must affect the community that is right outside our doors. 3. From reasoned spirituality to mystery-filled spirituality: we are yearning for mystery, awe and wonder. 4. From official leadership to gifted leadership: the trend is away from "a name followed by lots of letters and credentials" to gifted ministers and leaders, as witnessed by the proliferation of Commissioned Lay Pastors. 5. From long-term planning to short-term planning: things change very fast and very frequently now. Our institutions need to learn to be more agile and responsive. 6. From mass evangelism to one-on-one evangelism: folks are attracted to personal faith stories and building relationships with each other. 7. From worship that is benign receptivity to experiential: we yearn for worship to be experiential, participatory, image-driven and communal. 8. From discipleship to apostolate. Nishioka summarizes the Way of Jesus Christ in three words: Living: the things we do to keep going Dying: the things that must die, must end, must come to a close Rising: the things that are new, that are emerging, and that are growing among us Our task as leaders is to rely on the Holy Spirit and the Holy Community to help us discern what is living, dying and rising. Where will God lead us? As writer C.S. Lewis described it in Mere Christianity, our acceptance of Jesus as the bread of life has permanent consequences that can take us beyond what we expect, or are prepared for: "Imagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps, you understand what [God] is doing. [God] is getting the drains right, and stopping the leaks in the roof. But presently [God] starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably, and does not seem to make sense. What on earth is [God] up to?... You thought you were going to be made into a decent little cottage, but [God] is building a palace. [God] intends to come and live in it." From Bread to Body, Michaela Bruzzese, Sojourners Magazine, August 2009. Text: John 6:35, 41-51 Sermon: For The Life of the World For the past three weeks, the lectionary texts have focused on Jesus' proclamation: I am the Bread of Life. We know that this means that - in God - there is not just enough, there is an abundance. We know that Christ promises to give us Bread to sustain us, as God gave manna to the Israelites in the wilderness. This Sunday, we look at the joyful consequences of participating in God's transforming love. What does it mean for us to participate in the life of Christ --- how are we, as Christ's body, sharing the Bread of Life for the world? See you in worship! John 6:51 "As Christians we are called to be Christ's body; Jesus assures us that by consuming his body we too are consumed, and transformed, so that we in turn can transform the world - from death to life, despair to hope, exclusion to welcome, and judgment to mercy." August 17, 2009 WE?RE in the CHURCH AGAIN! Lonaconing Rededicates Sanctuary Sunday, August 9th was a bright and sunny day in Lonaconing. Inside Lonaconing Presbyterian Church, a dozen folks were singing enthusiastically ?We?re in the Church Again? ? lyrics written by the choir director to the melody of ?Soon and Very Soon.? The pews were full and God was there filling the space and the people with the Holy Spirit. This was a far cry from a Thursday night service eight months ago when the congregation gathered among the ruins of a burned ?out sanctuary. Members filled the aisles but were careful not to touch anything because a fire several days earlier had nearly destroyed the sanctuary and left it covered in soot. That night we held hands and cried over the damage? still, in awe that among the remains lay a singed Bible and a white advent candle untouched by the flames. Since then, the congregation has held worship in the church?s fellowship hall and at neighboring churches. But on this Sunday morning, the people?s hearts were renewed and their joyous spirit made it clear that ?we were glad when they said to us,? ?Let us go to the house of the Lord!? As we entered the church we could see the work that had been done: the walls and the tin ceiling were repainted, the carpet replaced, the pews refinished and the hymnals reclaimed. New Bibles were in the pews and on the pulpit; and, a new grand piano, communion table, pulpit and chairs were in place. The organ pipes and console had been cleaned and the sound system and lighting were new. It all seemed so new and beautiful ? almost worth the long wait. Rev. Tom Morgan reminded us that the Church is not a building but where two or three are gathered in the name of Christ. It is the Church because God is present and among us. On that Sunday, the Spirit was surely present and the Church came alive once again. On Thursday, August 20th at 7pm, the church will hold a special service of rededication. It, too, shall surely be a great day in Lonaconing and our brothers and sisters throughout the Presbytery are welcomed to share in this joyous moment. Filmed before the current economic crisis, "What Would Jesus Buy?" is an irreverent but thought provoking examination of the commercialization of Christmas in America. The movie follows Reverend Billy (performer Bill Talen) and the Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir on a cross-country mission to save Christmas from the Shopocalypse (the end of humankind from consumerism, over-consumption and the fires of eternal debt). The film also delves into issues such as the role sweatshops play in America's mass consumerism and Big-Box Culture. Follow Rev. Billy from the humble beginnings of preaching at his portable pulpit on New York City subways, to having a congregation of thousands and becoming the leader of not just a church but a national movement. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light ? Jesus, the Christ, in the Gospel According to Matthew ?I will give you that which eye has not seen, ear has not heard, and hand has not touched, and which has not entered into the heart of man.? Jesus, the Christ, in the Gospel According to Thomas Scripture: Daniel 10: 2-20a & Matthew 6:22-23 Sermon: Seeing the World through the Heart If you were an ophthalmologist or optometrist, you probably would question this portion of the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus? description of how the eye works is clinically, biologically incorrect. We know today that the eye is a receptacle, not the source of light. The eye is a window that lets light in. But how can the Son of God who had a role in creating you and me not know how the eye works? There?s obviously more going on here than meets the eye. If there?s a word that stirs fear and trepidation into the souls of Presbyterians, it?s the word ?evangelism.? Presbyterians, generally speaking, know what they believe and why. But many of us are reluctant to talk about our faith, especially with strangers. Why is this? What can we do to change this? Didn?t Jesus say, ?Go and tell?? Tell what? We?ll talk about our experiences and our fears and explore ways to overcome some of our anxieties. Led by Ken Kovacs. _________________________ The Thursday Morning Bible Study will return on October 1. We?ll gather at 10:30 a.m. in the library. Led by Ken Kovacs, we?ll explore in-depth a major book of the Bible, text to be determined. We?ll probably study either Matthew or Luke. Stay tuned. August 24, 2009 Fulfilling the Presbytery?s Vision for NEW CHURCH DEVELOPMENT It is a time of visioning for our Presbytery. It is a time for renewing our vision. The 21st Century church landscape is already vastly different from the church of 30 years ago. What do we want our Presbytery to be and do? I would like to weigh in on one subject area, New Church Development. As Presbyterians, we are called to respond to the continuously shifting nature and need for fulfilling the church?s ministry of presence and prophetic voice. Presbyteries need to start new churches. New churches are an effective way to grow the body of Christ. We have a unique perspective that is a gift to the world and progressive. Not that we can't improve, refine and reform our perspective and ministry simply that our message is worth sharing. Presbyteries need to start new churches because New Church Development is expensive. There are different ways of starting churches and our New Church Development Committee is exploring options; but, any approach that involves a paid clergy person will be expensive. Maybe two or three churches in our Presbytery could afford alone to start a new church. For the rest of us, we need partnership. Presbytery is a place where we can partner. We have two new church developments underway in our Presbytery -- Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church in Mount Airy pastored by Dan Melton and New Imani Community Church in Owings Mills pastored by Ron Johnson. These are churches that the Baltimore Presbytery birthed. These are our congregations. We have supported their ministries but we are not quite done. Saint Andrews is ready to build their first building on the property which Presbytery has provided. New Imani has moved to a new location. New Churches For a New Day was a great success and the vehicle by which we supported these two new churches over the last several years. New Churches for a New Day was a financial campaign that is now just about complete. Saint Andrews and New Imani are not complete however. They are living into God's dream, their dream and our dream. In this time of renewing the vision, in this time of dreaming about the future, we must not forget our friends at New Imani and Saint Andrews. Please support the Fulfilling the Vision financial campaign in 2009 and 2010. It's about keeping our promise. It's about finishing the important work we have begun. In Christ, Tim Stern Fulfilling the Vision 2010 *At this time, the Presbytery has received $120,000 ($34,000 from Council) in pledges toward a $250,000 goal for Fulfilling the Vision 2010. Ask us to educate, legislate, officiate, even to ameliorate, and we respond quite well; but rejoicing doesn't seem to be our thing. Add to all this the reality (of the season) - and the call to rejoice seems out of place. J. Barrie Shepherd, A Pilgrim's Way Sermon: There's a Party Going on Here Baltimore journalist H. L. Mencken once described Puritans as people who "feared that somebody, somewhere, might be having fun." The Puritans, like the Presbyterians, are the theological children of John Calvin. Is it possible that we have gotten caught up in the somber and serious stuff of life so that we are, as Lewis Smedes puts it, "missing out on the reason for our existence?" Christians are called to proclaim: Every morning is Easter morning! We are invited to live in the hope and the promise of the resurrection, even - and especially - in the midst of sorrow. When we see God's inbreaking realm, we are joy-filled people! There's a party going on here! Let's explore what true joy is, recognize what keeps us from seeing God's joy and delight, and commit ourselves to live life as a celebration. Jesus is our joy bringer! Thanks be to God. See you in worship! Dorothy __________________________________ Things you need to know. For the week of August 30, 2009 Worship is in Fellowship Hall at 9:30 am.
