March 30?, 2009 ?For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.? Matthew 6:19, NRSV There are few things that any of us can do in a given week that can affect so many people around the world, than to participate in One Great Hour of Sharing. Since 1969, Presbyterians have joined with millions of other Christians to share God?s love with people in need. The offering was begun by a group of our nation?s faith leaders seeking a common response to worldwide suffering after World War II. One Great Hour of Sharing recognizes that the hope we have in Christ is lived out in our hope for one another. Our gifts help our sisters and brothers around the world find the hope for brighter futures by supporting ministries of disaster response, refugee assistance and resettlement, and community development. But now, more than ever, those who are most vulnerable in our communities and around the world are counting on us to help make a difference in their lives. Most congregations receive the One Great Hour of Sharing on Palm Sunday or Easter and use the season of Lent to promote the offering ? which is entitled this year, ?Where Is Your Treasure. PC(USA) Moderator Bruce Reyes-Chow has challenged our churches to double their offering this year in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the One Great Hour of Sharing. In a letter to churches, Rev. Reyes-Chow writes that God?s ?warning [in Matthew 6] not to place our faith in earthly treasure, so vulnerable to rust and thievery, seems especially appropriate as we?ve watched the failure of the financial institutions in which millions placed their trust. Their collapse affects almost all of us in some way, but our poorest sisters and brothers most of all. Those whose lives have always been difficult now find them increasingly precarious; their need, always eloquent, calls out to us with new urgency.? The Presbytery of Baltimore encourages you to take time this week to promote the offering with congregations, groups, and individuals in your own circle of influence. For help in promoting One Great Hour of Sharing at your church visit the One Great Hour of Sharing Web site where you can download a promotional video and find other tools to share information about the offering with your congregation. Just type "Catonsville Presbyterian" in the Facebook search engine and then request to the join. It's semi-private. Membership is moderated by the page administrator. It's currently at a rudimentary stage of development. The Facebook group is in addition to (and not a substitute for) other forms of communication (such as the Messenger, the bulletin announcements, email announcements). This online community will help members/friends to connect and interact and provide mutual care and support. Israel (www.flickr.com) Text: Mark 11: 1-25 Sermon: A Temple Tantrum Although the gospel lectionary for Palm Sunday is Mark 11:1-11, this week we're going to read right through to verse 25. We lose the dramatic point of Mark's gospel if we stop with Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. We'll look at what happens on Sunday and Monday and early Tuesday of Holy Week. Twice on Monday there is a weird encounter with a fig tree. Placed between the two fig tree references is the account of Jesus' angry demonstration in the Temple. What's going on here? Nothing in Mark's gospel is there by mistake; everything written is intentional. Everything is given to make a point, to preach, to proclaim the message. Mark's message is found in the significant link between the symbol of the fig tree and what Jesus' did in the Temple - and what Jesus came to experience later that same week in Jerusalem. See you in worship, Ken Kovacs ___________________________________________________ Life in Our Community for the Week of April 5 - 12, 2009 Christian Education LentEvent 2009: Many thanks to our middle school youth and church school teachers for presenting a sensory walk through Holy Week this morning. Our children sang Hosanna!, felt the water & tasted the bread & juice of Maundy Thursday, ate pretzel prayers for the Garden of Gethsemane, shared Hot Cross Buns marked with the shape of a cross, smelled the anointing oil, and celebrated the joy and hope of Easter by making cards for our homebound members. Thanks to all who participated in this memorable event. Palm Sunday Activities - Sunday, April 5: Church school children (ages 3 - grade 5) and their parents are invited to a brief LentEvent at 9:45 a.m. next Sunday morning (church school still begins at its regular time of 9:00 a.m.). We'll taste the bread of Maundy Thursday, share the joy of Easter morning, sing "Hosanna!," and more. Parents should meet their children in their classrooms, then come over to fellowship hall. We will all gather in the sanctuary at 10:20 to participate in the palm processional. Our church school choir will sing the introit. Spring Break Movie Night: All youth & their families are invited to a semi-unstructured evening from 5:30-7:30 p.m. We'll watch a movie, play in the gym, or just sit back and relax. Popcorn & drinks will be provided; feel free to bring a picnic supper. One Great Hour of Sharing: Our fishbanks will be collected Sunday and next week in the sanctuary during worship. OGHS money shares the Easter message of hope and new life by providing medicine, clean drinking water, self-development programs, disaster relief, and much, much more. Extra banks are available on the CE table in the education wing hallway. New Caregiver in the Panda Room: We welcome Suzanne Gabriel, a UMBC student, to our Sunday morning child care ministry. Suzanne has lots of experience working with young children: as a babysitter, a Hillcrest Elementary mentor, a lifeguard/swimming instructor, and as an assistant to mentally disabled and autistic children at a local horseback riding school. She is also a member of the UMBC track and field team, so we're sure she'll bring lots of energy to our ministry. We are delighted she's here. Easter Sunday, April 12: Please note that we will have worship for all ages in the sanctuary at 10:30 a.m. We will not have morning church school or Second Sunday activities, however child care for infants - Kindergarten will be provided. Remember to practice the Easter response: Christ is risen! Christ is risen, indeed! Adult Education - 9:00 a.m. in the Library. April 5, Palm Sunday: Holy Week in Word & Image. Join us as we explore the events of Holy Week by reading scripture and "reading" images inspired by scripture. Ken Kovacs will guide us through key themes in Mark's Gospel. Nina Lagervall will share three paintings, which emerged from her reading of the passion narrative in Mark's Gospel, two from the Garden of Gethsemane and one from the Easter morning account. Word and image together will allow us to enter into the story in new ways. April 12, Easter Sunday: No class. April 19: Annapolis Update. Join us for our annual Maryland General Assembly update from Julie Erickson, Baltimore Presbytery's director of public policy. She will summarize the legislation of interest that came up this year, including issues surrounding the death penalty, greenhouse gas emissions, and energy assistance. April 26: Endless Forms Most Beautiful. Darwin was a Godless naturalist. Or so everyone says. The publication of his book "On the Origin of Species" in 1859 created an instantaneous rift between science and religion. Or did it? These assumptions are at the root of one of society's most difficult debates. Join us on the 26th to learn about Darwin, faith, and evolution. Led by Cindy Bolognese. Mission Visitors from IMCK Hospital You may remember the visit we had previously from Bernard Kabibu talking to us about the work at the IMCK Hospital. Mr. Kabibu will join us again on Friday, April 24, at 6:00 p.m. for another potluck supper. He will be speaking along with Superintendent Dr. Leon Mubikai and a freewill offering will be collected to cover the expenses of their U.S. mission tour. The Mission Committee invites all to come out and support the great work being done in Presbyterian mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Look for the sign up table in fellowship hall. Lenten Choice: Looking for something to TAKE UP for this Lenten season? Why not join our "5 CENTS A MEAL" HUNGER PROGRAM? By setting aside a NICKEL each time you sit down to a meal, and contributing that to our Hunger Program, you can help churches in our Presbytery feed the hungry. Look for the RED and WHITE CONTAINERS in fellowship hall to contribute your pennies, nickels, etc. Your spare change can help to fight hunger in our local communities. Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity Update: Come to the France Room following worship today to hear the latest news about Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity (CHFH) and our church's role in helping to sponsor the rehabilitation of another Washington Village ("Pigtown") house. Jayna Powell, Faith Relations Coordinator for CHFH, will talk about this year's "United Churches" Build Project. April 6, 2009 Presbytery Fundraiser Benefits New Church Developments by Rev. Walt Peters, Chairman of New Church Development New Imani By now, most already know that the Presbytery has launched a $250,000 fundraiser to support St. Andrew?s Church in Mt. Airy and the New Imani NCD in Owings Mills as both congregations move forward in mission and ministry. Given the current economic climate, this may seem like a fool?s errand ? but I don?t think so. While $250,000 would be a great deal of money for an individual or a congregation to offer, it is not a lot for us to raise together. An offering of Less than $15 per member of our Presbytery would more than meet the goal. A lot of us spend more than that on coffee or soft drinks each week. While many of us remain preoccupied with the economic plight of our own church communities ? and, rightly so ? we must remember that these two budding congregations are the result of our effort and investment to share the gospel in a changing world. Our actions have already resulted in significant gains for the people who worship and serve in these two faith communities and for the rest of us who have had the chance to learn from their mistakes and successes. As I write, New Imani hopes to establish itself as a community resource while pursuing its charter; and, St. Andrews plans to break ground for a new church building in Spring 2010. Just as these New Church Developments now benefit from your offerings; each of our Presbytery?s congregations has benefitted in the past from the gifts and prayers of others. Whether it was an 18th century presbytery that sent an itinerant preacher to work in frontier settlement or a 20th century presbytery that provided land and leadership for new church starts, our congregations have a history of ?standing on the shoulders? of those who?ve gone before. Take a look at your own congregation?s history and I suspect you will find that there was a time when, without the assistance of others of God?s people, the experiment that was your church might not have survived in its early days. Over the next year, we can help these burgeoning congregations build on their promising beginnings. I look forward to the opportunity to share with the presbytery and its member congregations what has already been done for Christ?s sake at St. Andrews and New Imani; what they may yet do; and how ? together ? we can help them do it. Wynn Dead Clergyman, Emeritus Educator and Long-Time Member of the Presbytery of Baltimore The Rev. Dr. J.C. Wynn, 88, Clergyman and Educator Emeritus, died Tuesday at the Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville. A memorial service will be held 11am Monday, April 13 at Our Lady of Angels Chapel at Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville. Rev. Wynn served the pastorate briefly then spent most of his career in respected academic work. He and his wife of 65 years, Rachel, joined the Presbytery of Baltimore after retiring to Maryland in late 1980s. As a member of the Presbytery, Rev. Wynn served on numerous committees, lectured often on the philosophy of Plato and ministered locally to residents of Charlestown. "He was always willing to serve. He was a great Presbyterian," said Peter Nord, Executive Presbyter. Rev. Wynn grew up in Johnstown, PA, where he graduated from high school. After completing his major in philosophy at The College of Wooster and graduate work at Yale Divinity School, Rev. Wynn was ordained in 1944 and served as associate pastor in Presbyterian churches in the Midwest. He focused his career on marriage and family matters, and was appointed in 1950 as Director of Family Education for the Presbyterian Board of Christian Education in Philadelphia. Rev. Wynn later became the chairman on the Commission on Sexuality in the Human Community, served on the Committee on the Family for the National Council of Churches and the Family Council at the World Council of Churches, and helped to write the Vatican-Protestant report on inter-faith marriage. He was a fellow of the American Association of Marriage and Family Counseling, and a member of the national clergy committee for Planned Parenthood, among others. He lectured, published articles and wrote or edited nine books on marriage therapy and family issues. Rev. Wynn later received Master's of Arts and Doctor of Education degrees from Columbia University, as well as a Doctor of Divinity degree from Davis and Elkins College. He joined the inter-denominational faculty of Colgate Rochester Divinity School in Rochester, New York in 1960, where he developed and administered an innovative doctoral (Doctor of Ministry) program in family therapy for 28 years. In addition to his wife, Rev. Wynn is survived by a son, Mark Wynn of Arnold, MD; two daughters, Martha Borland of West Sunbury, PA, and Maryan Ainsworth of Old Greenwich, CT; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Memorial gifts may be sent to The Wynn Fund for Family Ministries, Colgate Rochester Divinity School, 1100 S. We'll remember Jesus' mandate to "love one another" as we celebrate the Eucharist together. This is a way for us to imagine our place at the table with the Lord on that eventful night. Then we'll transition into the sanctuary for a Service of Tenebrae. This service of "darkness" will include a reading of the Passion According to Mark, selections from the choir, and the singing of hymns. (When arriving for the service, please go directly to fellowship hall.) Good Friday, April 10 The sanctuary will be open for prayer from noon to 3:00 p.m. Evening Worship at 7:30 p.m. Scripture Lesson: John 18:1-19:42 Sermon: The Crux of the Matter Resurrection of the Lord - Easter Sunday, April 12 Festival Worship at 10:30 a.m. Scripture Lessons: Psalm 118:1-2, 14-24 & Mark 16:1-8 Sermon: Go and Tell Sacrament of Holy Communion Second Sunday after Easter, April 19 Scripture Lessons: John 20:19-31 & 1 John 1:1 Sermon: A Friend Indeed -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... See you in worship, Ken Kovacs ___________________________________________________ Life in Our Community for the Week of April 12-29, 2009 Christian Education New Caregiver in the Panda Room: We welcome Suzanne Gabriel, a UMBC student, to our Sunday morning child care ministry. Youth Groups: Crossroads senior high meet at the Fromms' next Sunday, April 19, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. for dinner and activities. One Great Hour of Sharing: Many thanks to all who have contributed to this annual OGHS offering. Your gifts provide life-giving services to people all over the world through the Presbyterian Hunger Program, Disaster Relief Program, and Self-Development of People. What a wonderful Easter gift to provide clean drinking water, farming tools and seeds, medicines and blankets, reconstruction of houses, and much, much more. All these share the message of hope through Jesus Christ. What an incredible blessing! Adult Education - 9:00 a.m. in the Library. Volunteers Needed for Habitat! Our "United Churches" build for Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity begins April 14! Our first "church group work day" is scheduled for Saturday, May 2. Our next group day will be Saturday, August 29. We've been given the first and the last group work days on the schedule, so if you're able to join us for both, you'll get the unique opportunity to see this project's complete transformation - "start to finish." How exciting is that?! If you want to register and sign up online, it needs to be done two weeks ahead of the workday. Within two weeks of the date, or for any help/questions, contact Barbara Rice at 410-281-2189 or barbararice at mailstation.com. (Be aware, you'll need "join codes" to sign up online, and at two weeks before a workday, empty slots will be filled by any "wait list" volunteers. It's best to sign up then cancel if you need to.) We have been given the honor of helping to get this year's build off the ground - let's fill up our work group and show what CPC can do as we put our faith into action! Outreach Come and Join Catonsville Presbyterian! Our next new members class will be received on Pentecost Sunday, May 31, 2009. Ready to join? Want to learn more about our ministry? Join us for dinner on Friday, May 22, at 6 p.m., and then on Saturday, May 23, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Both meetings will be at the church. April 13, 2009 Ministering to the Need Within by Barb Graves, Administrator Fairmont Presbyterian Church in Kettering, Ohio DAY IN AND DAY OUT, ministers and other church workers give of themselves emotionally, spiritually and physically to help meet the needs of others. While this is most certainly a part of their calling, it doesn?t mean that they, too, won?t need some spiritual care on occasion. The question is: who can - or will - minister to them? So much of their days are spent dealing with confidential matters. Who can they turn to in confidence? How do they ask for help? Should they have to ask? Sometimes we?d do well to back up a little, take a look at those with whom we serve, and see what they might need. Who knows better than our co-workers when we?re under stress and can understand the type of stress we face? A church worker is in a very special position to recognize when their co-workers, including pastors, are in need of a blessing. Sometimes a smile or hug is sufficient. Maybe providing a meal during an especially busy time, a kind word or note recognizing all they do for others, or a gift certificate to the local bookstore, would be helpful. Very often, I have found that a church worker just needs a listening ear. It?s especially important that they have someone as a sounding board who can keep their confidence. They can?t share their needs and concerns with just anyone ? they deal with too many confidential or sensitive matters. On the other side of the issue: it isn?t always easy to accept help from others. Some have become so accustomed to helping others that they don?t know how to graciously accept help offered to them. First, they need to learn that it?s OK to receive help; and, then they need to learn what they have taught others: that it?s a blessing to receive as well as to give. The Presbytery offers numerous opportunities for spiritual retreat and renewal. Check out the calendar at www.baltimorepresbytery.org Inside this Issue Take Note/Act Now ? Volunteer Workshop ? He is Risen, indeed! ?Doubting Thomas? by Caravaggio (1602-3) ?Here might I stay and sing, No story so divine; Never was love, dear King, Never was grief like Thine. This is my Friend, In whose sweet praise I all my days Could gladly spend.? Samuel Crossman (1624-1683/4) Text: John 20: 19-31 Sermon: A Friend Indeed The ?Doubting Thomas? text is the traditional reading for the Sunday after Easter. Keeping with tradition, we?ll explore this text this week, but will approach it from a different angle. Maybe the text is not really about Thomas at all. Maybe it?s not about obtaining the proper evidence or proof for belief. Maybe those are questions posed by our skeptical, suspicious age. What if this account is really more about Jesus and the way Jesus meets Thomas? Then maybe it?s less about doubt and more about what it?s like to be befriended by the Resurrected One ? and the difference that encounter can make in our lives. See you in worship, Ken Kovacs ___________________________________________________ Life in Our Community for the Week of April 19-26, 2009 Child Care Center Catonsville Presbyterian Church Family Child Care Center is celebrating the Week of the Young Child. Darwin was a Godless naturalist. Or so everyone says. The publication of his book ?On the Origin of Species? in 1859 created an instantaneous rift between science and religion. Or did it? These assumptions are at the root of one of society?s most difficult debates. Join us on the 26th to learn about Darwin, faith, and evolution. Led by Cindy Bolognese. May 17: The State of the Economy and Our Call to Stewardship. As the direction of the economy remains uncertain, and as we individually and collectively look to shepherd our resources even more carefully, how do we balance our own concerns with the growing needs around us? Message-ID: <005001c9c28c$9349b120$b9dd1360$@org> ?? April 20, 2009 What Are We Called to Be? by Jim Schroll, Presbytery Council About 10 to 15 years ago, the Presbytery of Baltimore undertook a comprehensive study of how we operated and developed a new mission design. As a result of the work of the Committee on Goals, Objectives, and Strategies (COGOS), we intentionally tried to move from a top-down organization to an organization that attempts to provide resources for local congregations and leaders. That transformation affected the presbytery?s staff design, our committee organization, and the selection process for our Executive Presbyter. The Council has spent the past several years assessing how well the implementation of our plans has gone; where we have been successful and where our efforts may not have lived up to our hopes. The Vision Committee followed up that period of self-examination by beginning to consider what God is calling us to be. We have read, studied, engaged in discussion, talked with leaders of other presbyteries, and prayed together in an effort to understand the changing roles of the Church in the world ? and, the presbytery in the Church. We have identified three areas in which the Holy Spirit is ?bubbling up? through the church: the resurgence of spirituality, the hunger for authentic Christian community and the hope for the presbytery to be an agent of nourishment for its churches and leaders. These ideas were presented to the Council at a retreat last December. The result of those discussions was a conclusion that now may be the time for us to undergo another period of discerning what God has in mind for us. Another conclusion was that such an undertaking requires the support of the presbytery as a whole. Accordingly, the Council has called for the presbytery to gather on April 23rd for a chance to reflect together. The focus of the meeting will be to celebrate what COGOS has meant to the presbytery, consider if we are all that God wants us to be, and decide whether we are now called to a new period of discernment of what the Spirit wills for our presbytery. We believe that this is a critical time for us, and the meeting will focus almost entirely on this question. The meeting will be held at Harundale Presbyterian Church, beginning at 4:00 PM. Our hope is to be finished by 7:30 to 8:00. We would urge all congregations and their leaders - pastors, associates, and lay leaders - to participate. We would welcome the presence of more lay leaders than just your elder commissioners. Please join us for this most important gathering. Inside this Issue Take Note/Act Now ? The disciples are trying to come to terms with the reports of the Risen Christ. How can this be? What does it mean? Who can grasp such a thing? And then Jesus appears to them. He instructs them and gives them a commission: "You are witnesses of these things." It's not simply an adjective, it's a job description. We, in our baptism, are called to be 21st century witnesses. Exciting Vacation Bible School Possibility: We're exploring the possibility of doing a two-night mini-VBS here at the church, with the suggested dates of Wednesday & Thursday, June 24 & 25. This would run from 6 to 8 p.m. and include dinner, Bible stories, crafts, and other small group activities. If you might be interested in either participating and/or volunteering (teens especially encouraged!), please let Dorothy Boulton know by May 3. A planning group will be meeting soon. (Please note that this is in addition to our shared weekday VBS with Hope Church, July 27-31.) PrayerFest: An Experiential Workshop Saturday, May 16, 2009 9:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. "Prayer is none other than an expanding heart in the presence of God." -John Calvin As Christians, we believe prayer is something we should do, and Paul even admonishes us to pray constantly (1 Thessalonians 5:17). However, questions about prayer often arise: ? How do I cultivate a prayer life? ? Is there right or wrong way to pray? ? Why are there so many different forms of prayer? ? Are some more appropriate on particular occasions? ? Why do certain types of prayer resonate with particular individuals while seeming impenetrable to others? ? Have I found the best match of prayer activities for my own personality? Is there a wrong or a right way to walk the labyrinth? Come join us for a three-hour experiential prayer workshop. After an overview discussion about the nature of prayer, we'll spend time exploring various prayer stations or fifteen minute workshops. You can choose to walk the church's labyrinth, try lectio divina, experience contemplative prayer, start a prayer journal, try your hand at an arts and crafts station, and learn forms of prayers for different personality types, pray with images, or pray the grounds. After the various workshops, we'll gather to experience worship in the style of Taiz?. For those who can stay past 12:15, a light lunch will be provided. Hosted by the Adult Education Committee. Mission Work on Habitat Rehab Begins! A new "build" for Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity, sponsored by United Churches, is beginning on Ward Street in Washington Village ("Pigtown"). Great News! We've filled up the allotted slots for CPC's first assigned Saturday group day, May 2. Our next assigned group workday won't be until the end of the scheduled build, on August 29. In between, however, there are many opportunities to work on-site. There are a limited number of "open spots" on many Saturdays. There is also a special need for volunteers who can work on-site on weekdays. A Habitat workday is 8:15-3:45 (with breaks for snack and lunch!). You can see the work calendar by registering online at chesapeakehfh.org/volunteer and using the "join codes" UC09 and CPC09 (last two digits of each are numeric). The show also features Marge Marguilles, a weaver who has mentored clients at Arundel Lodge for the past two years. Stop by the Let There be Art gallery in the library after worship and enjoy the exhibit. A Glimpse Into Our Past Question: Our April 15, 1945, church bulletin announced that "'The annual Congregational Dinner' will be held on April 25 at 6:30 p.m. Supper will be served for the small cost of $.25 per person." Then "a prominent feature of the evening" was mentioned. What was this "promised feature"? Answer: The burning of the church mortgage. The announcement was made that "the Mortgage Committee is most happy to announce that the church mortgage is now paid in full and the mortgage cancelled. We have met our greatest hopes in paying off a debt of $35,000 in the past few years." Also noted in the bulletin was "The fact that our church is now free of debt and fully belongs to the congregation is really a great event in our history. It should enable us to go forward into a greater future of usefulness in pressing forward the work of God's kingdom and spreading the Gospel of Christ to which cause we are dedicated." Community Event Lazarus Caucus Benefit - Wednesday, April 29, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Dimitri's, 2205 Frederick Road, Catonsville. April 27, 2009 by Andrew Foster Connors, Pastor Brown Memorial Park Avenue Presbyterian Church On April 29, Presbyterians and other denominations in support of Christian Peace Witness for Iraq will again gather in Washington, DC for an evening of worship and witness. Falling on the 100th day of President Barack Obama's administration, our gathering will make clear to our country's political leaders that our vision for a peaceful alternative to the way of violence is still alive and pressing. The war in Iraq has already claimed the lives of more than 4200 Americans and somewhere between half a million and 1.2 million Iraqis. Imagine the entire population of Baltimore killed over a six year period. Without sustained political pressure to end this war, the death toll in Iraq will continue to rise. There are some who have said that the voices of peace should give President Obama more time. Others say they trust him to "do the right thing." These well-wishes for our current government's administration are noble but meaningless without action. Anyone who believes that President Obama wants to "do the right thing" and end the war in Iraq, should support his desire by helping to sustain the political pressure on congress that he needs to follow through. Christian Peace Witness invites you to do just that by joining with us on the 100th day of President Obama's administration at 7pm on Wednesday, Apr. 29th at the National City Christian Church in Washington, DC. We will participate in a candlelight procession to the White House, engage in prayer and listen to speakers, such as: Tony Campolo, a social activist; the Rev. Lennox Yearwood, Jr., president of the HipHop Caucus; Sr. Dianna Ortiz, who survived torture in Guatemala; Elizabeth McAlister, activist and co-founder of Jonah House; and, Fr. Daniel Berrigan, a poet and peace activist. By rallying together for Peace in Iraq, we hope to challenge each other to bear that vision publicly, and sustain our voices until the war is indeed ended. As we have done in the past, we will gather for worship to hear again God's peaceful alternative to the way of violence. We will challenge each other to bear that vision publicly, and sustain our voices until the war is indeed ended. He was fascinated as he fingered through the old pages. Suddenly, something fell out. He picked it up and found that it was an old, dried leaf from a flower that had been pressed flat between the pages. "Grandma, look what I found," he called out. "What have you got there, dear?" she asked." With astonishment in his voice, the boy answered, "I think it's Adam's underwear!" Worship Worship Flowers: If you would like to provide the flowers for a Sunday morning worship service as a memorial, in recognition of someone, or in celebration of a special event, please call Betty Nagle at 410-465-2294. Please let her know how you would like the announcement to read. The two bouquets are $37.95. Praying through the Congregation: Throughout the year, the congregation will be praying for all church members and families. Using our alphabetical church directory, we will feature these names on our Intercessor List, approximately seven members/families each Sunday. We invite you to pray for these persons during that week; reaching out by sending a card or making a phone call is also welcome. Art Show We are showcasing Compositions in Color - a display of textiles presented by Arundel Lodge, Inc., a mental health program near Annapolis. The artists' work is constructed using picture frames, yarn, and found materials. "The center offers a wide variety of classes and services to facilitate its members' recovery," says art director DeeDee Miller. The show also features Marge Marguilles, a weaver who has mentored clients at Arundel Lodge for the past two years. Stop by the Let There be Art gallery in the library after worship and enjoy the exhibit. A Glimpse Into Our Past Question: After the heading "Spring House-Cleaning Time is Here!" there was this announcement in the April 25, 1937, church bulletin: "Goodwill is employing a larger number of handicapped people than at any time in its history. You have garments hanging in your closets that, if sent to Goodwill, will bring hope to an increased number. Phone Wolfe 9626 at once! And also add ? ." What were the donors asked to add? Answer: Rags! The bulletin added, "Rags are valuable to Goodwill!" However, questions about prayer often arise: ? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
