Bruce Reyes-Chow The office of the Presbytery of Baltimore will be closed Monday, September 1st in recognition of the Labor Day Holiday. _____ August 29, 2008 Growing in Faith TogetherWe Are Family by The Reverend Bruce Reyes-Chow, Moderator of the 218th General Assembly of PC(U.S.A.) Since the end of the 218th General Assembly, it is safe to say that serving as Moderator has already been an incredibly meaningful experience. What a privilege to be in a place to listen to the passionate voices of this community, our church family. Through ?Town Halls? online communities and personal interactions, the complex nature of our church has been made very real to me. As I have listened to the voices that have shared, whispered, and shouted in my direction, it is clear that a great many realties exist in our church. A number of individuals and communities are filled with pain, frustration, anger, sadness, resignation, and righteous indignation over GA actions. In the midst of all the many folks who are faithfully discerning their place in this denomination, we must remember that we are family, joined first by common belief in the salvific nature of Jesus Christ, and then by affiliations ? affinity and, yes, by denomination. For while there is great turmoil, make no mistake that there is also great hope and new life in our church ? hope for who the PC(USA) might become, hope for followers of Christ to act as such, and hope that we as God?s creation can come together to fully manifest God?s hopes and intentions for the world and humanity. Recently, I asked some folks about their greatest hopes for the church. Here is some of what they said: ?I can?t fit my hopes for the church in a sentence. All I know is I?m drawn to words like just, hospitable, truth, dialogue, faith, Spirit, collaboration and home. I also am passionate about youth finding their way into the fabric of church at the local level and on up? (Sarah Lamb, Des Moines, IA). ?My hope for the church is that we would pray together more. Not praying for anything, but praying to be in relationship with God. I think everyone in the church, and certainly every congregation and group, and the church as a whole, could use some time together, being community with God? (Hannah Nutt, New Concord, OH). Like any family, there will ebbs and flows in how we interact. Sometimes, it will be rough and we will wish we were no longer related; other times, we will defend one another like only family members can. When we are at our most faithful, we will hope more than we could ever imagine that the other will grow fully into who God hopes that person to become. I firmly believe that God hopes for us to be, above all, faithful. This is also my hope for each and every one of us. I hope it is yours as well. In his world hospitality was the primary act of a civilized people. This text provides a remarkable window into the custom of hospitality in the desert cultures. But it's more than just social etiquette. It's about the way we make space for the other, for the stranger. How we welcome the stranger says something about how open we are to God's presence in our lives. When God shows up, often unannounced and unexpected, how will we respond, and will we welcome what God has to say? See you in worship! September 21 - Session 2: Hospitality: Loving the Stranger. Hospitality is a theme most Christians take very seriously. How do we welcome strangers in our community? Do we welcome outsiders? In this session, we will investigate New Testament and other early Christian writing for evidence of Christian hospitality and look at possible implications of such a practice by contemporary disciples of Jesus Christ. Led by Kathy Glennan. September 28 - Divine Inspiration and the Word of God. The word "inspiration" is used in various ways today, especially outside of a religious context: we can find an individual inspiring; works of art and literature can be inspired; and athletic achievements can be inspirational. None of these uses of the word matches the meaning of inspiration as a doctrine about Scripture in Christian theology. There is a huge difference between declaring that we are inspired by Psalm 23 and declaring that Psalm 23 is the inspired word of God. Join us to discuss inspiration in relation to the nature of Scripture itself. Led by Adam Allen. Thursday Morning Bible Study will resume on Thursday, October 2, at 10:30 a.m. in the library. Led by Dr. Kovacs, this year's text will be the book of Job in the Hebrew scriptures. Why Job? Because I'm up for the challenge and I know many of you are too. It's one of the most difficult portions of scripture. Yet, the questions posed by this story - about God, about ourselves, about the world, about evil, about the reasons for human suffering - are just as relevant today as they were in the sixth century B.C., while Israel was in exile. If you will need child care, please let Ken Kovacs know ASAP. Mission Habitat Houses are in the Homestretch! Over the past several months, we've been sending volunteers to Ward Street in "Pigtown" to work on our two United Churches-sponsored "builds," in connection with Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity. The houses are nearing completion . . . but there's still work to be done! If priming/painting or installing cabinets/hardware (the "finishing touches") are your strong suits, NOW could be the perfect time to volunteer! The projected schedule is: Priming: Saturday, September 13 Trim & Paint: Wednesday, September 17 - Thursday, September 18 Saturday, September 20 Cabinets/Hardware: Wednesday, October 1 - Thursday, October 2 Saturday, October 4 If you're able to volunteer or provide a snack for any of these dates, contact Barbara Rice at 410-281-2189 or barbararice at mailstation.com. The CROP Hunger Walk is on its way! Our annual mission to raise money for our local food pantries/assistance organizations and to support the work of Church World Service is coming up on Sunday, October 5. Sponsors and walkers are needed. Please see Vicki Lord in fellowship hall for more information. This event raised a record amount last year - it's fun, it's a ministry we share with over a dozen neighboring churches, and it gives life and hope to thousands of people in the name of Jesus Christ. Come walk with us! Outreach Be sure to join our email list if you would like to find out about special events, upcoming worship, educational opportunities, and announcements regarding members and friends of the church. If you are up to date with your pledged or unpledged giving, thank you. If not, please plan to bring your giving up to date September 21. Our financial gifts and pledges are tangible signs of our faith and our commitment to God's work in this church. One way to avoid falling behind with your pledged or unpledged giving is to sign up for Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). This is done through Hubbard Press, which is affiliated with the PC (USA). At no charge to you, this will automatically transfer the amount of your monthly giving from your account to the church's account, as of the 20th of each month. Simply complete the form located at the back of the sanctuary and on the Welcome Table in fellowship hall, attach a voided check, and return it to the church office marked to the attention of the Stewardship Committee. Questions? See the explanation of "What is EFT?" on the other side of the authorization form. Thank you, Peter Green, Chair, Stewardship Committee Worship Worship Flowers: If you would like to provide the flowers for a Sunday morning worship service as a memorial, in recognition of someone, or in celebration of a special event, please call Betty Nagle at 410-465-2294. Please let us know how you would like the announcement to read. The two bouquets are $37.95. You Are Invited! Gallimaufry will hold its annual cookout and crab feast on Saturday, September 20, at 3:00 p.m. at the home of Dot Kielman, 9 Osborne Ave. -2 blocks east of the church. The cost will be $4 per person plus the cost of the crabs. As is customary, participants are requested to bring a salad or dessert to share. There is a sign-up sheet in fellowship hall. All are welcome. A Glimpse Into Our Past Each Sunday in September the Glimpse will be taken from the book History of the Catonsville Presbyterian Church 1880-1980 by Dr. David Zimmerman, a very active member of CPC from 1938-1993. Please feel free to take one of these interesting and informative books with you from the table in fellowship hall. Few of us know that the house at 15 Wyndcrest Avenue (one street east of CPC) was originally the manse built in 1905-1906 for our second pastor, Rev. John Nesbitt, on a lot owned by Mrs. Richard Baer, a devoted member of CPC. A picture of this house is on page 14 of Dr. Zimmerman's book. Does anyone know whether it has the two fireplaces requested by Rev. Nesbitt? Catonsville Presbyterian Concert Series September 21 marks the beginning of the 10th season for the Catonsville Presbyterian Concert Series. We will be celebrating this milestone with special concerts by artists and groups that you have enjoyed over the years. You will recognize many of the names of the performers with three Catonsville natives, Jennifer Kloetzel, David Hardy and Andrew Gerle, returning during the year. We could use three or four volunteers per concert to make sure that everything runs smoothly: to greet at the doors, to get the sanctuary ready before and after the concert, and to give out programs. If you can be available for any of the concert dates and are willing to come a little early or stay a little late to help, please contact Gay Boles at 301-776-4299, gayboles at verizon.net or Vicki Haupt at 410-313-8206, vickihaupt at verizon.net. Neither is there a cost to the church. If you wish to order additional photos, you may do so if you wish, but there is certainly not an expectation or a requirement to do so. We are hoping to have a photo directory in order to help our members connect with one another. This is the first photo directory of the 21st century (!) so it's been a while since we've published one. Every church member is valued and important so we're hoping every one will take the time to be included. We really mean it when we say it's not complete without you. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Casting Our Vote The Presidential election is moving swiftly ahead. For the first time in history, an African American has become the nominee of a major political party, the democrats; while, republicans have nominated the first woman vice-president on their ticket. Regardless of which party you are affiliated with or whom you decide to vote for, this is a historic moment for our nation! In these times of uncertainty, it is imperative that we voice our choice and vote. I would encourage all of our churches to join the effort of empowering our members and friends to participate in the election process by exercising your right to vote on November 4th, 2008. If you have not registered to vote for the General Election, you must do so before October 14th, 2008. If you are unable to vote in person on November 4th, you can vote by absentee ballot. However, you must submit an application in order to receive an absentee ballot. Once you are approved to vote by absentee ballot, the Maryland Board of elections will send you the actual absentee ballot by mail three weeks before the election. You must fill it out and return it to the Board of Elections by the date indicated. Voter Registration and Absentee Ballot Application forms can be downloaded from the internet at http://www.elections.state.md.us/ or you can contact the board of elections at 410-269-2849 or toll free at 1-800-222-8683 for additional information. I have shared the above information with my congregation, Knox Presbyterian Church, and extended my services to support them in filling out the forms/mailing in the document. Dr. Kenneth E. Kovacs Yes, we did read the Romans text last week in worship. It's worth hearing again (and again). Linking the Romans text with a description of what the early church was like in Acts 2, we get a fuller picture of what the early church was like when it gathered to worship God through Christ. The earliest Christian communities were known for their hospitality and welcome. This Sunday we'll continue looking at the importance and relevance of this practice for the contemporary church. The sermon will seek to complement the adult education class this Sunday, led by Kathy Glennan, which will focus on New Testament expressions of hospitality. Looking forward to seeing you on Sunday! Grace and peace, Ken ___________________________________________________ Things you need to know for the week September 21-28, 2008 Christian Education Crossroads Senior High Youth Group meets this Sunday evening for dinner & planning. Centsability - 5 Cents A Meal: Parents - please have your children bring their "cents" to church school on October 28. For more information, call 410-750-1941. Church School for all ages continues! For information about programs for children and youth, please stop by the CE table in the education wing hallway; Dorothy Boulton at the church office and Art Mueller, CE chair, 410-552-3131, are happy to help. For information about adult education programs, please contact Ken Kovacs at the church office. Children and Youth Volunteers: Please be sure to see the back page of these announcements to sign up for various ministries such as liturgist, child care volunteer, etc. These may be placed in the offering plates during worship or returned to the church office. CROP Walk: Families are invited to walk together during the CROP walk on Sunday, October 5. Pick up a sponsor form in fellowship hall. No youth groups will meet on that Sunday evening so there'll be plenty of time for homework, etc. Join us for the walk! Adult Education: Sundays at 9 a.m. Child care is available. September 21 (Library) - Hospitality: Loving The Stranger Hospitality is a theme most Christians take very seriously. How do we welcome strangers in our community? Do we welcome outsiders? What are our obligations to strangers? Do guests also have obligations to hosts? Last week we explored the basic principles of the ancient practice of hospitality, analyze both positive and negative examples of the observance in the Hebrew Bible, and look at ancient and contemporary theological questions associated with this social phenomenon. This week, Session 2 will investigate New Testament and other early Christian writing for evidence of Christian hospitality and look at possible implications of such a practice by contemporary disciples of Jesus Christ. October 5 - Interpreting the Bible: The Importance of Context. We read the Bible because we believe that God can give meaning and direction to our lives through its words. However, it is no simple task to read and understand the Bible because there are real differences between the biblical context and our contemporary context. Contextual issues such as language, literary styles, history, and culture are essential to keep in mind as we read a Bible passage and search for meaning. Kathy Glennan will encourage us to find examples of common errors of interpretation and build a list of things to keep in mind when reading a particular Biblical passage. Mission The CROP Hunger Walk is on its way! Our annual mission to raise money for our local food pantries/assistance organizations and to support the work of Church World Service is coming up on Sunday, October 5, leaving at 2 p.m. from Christian Temple, 5820 Edmondson Avenue. Sponsors and walkers (5K or 1K) are needed. Please see Vickie Lord in fellowship hall for more information. This event raised a record amount last year - it's fun, it's a ministry we share with over a dozen neighboring churches, and it gives life and hope to thousands of people in the name of Jesus Christ. (Lunch is available at 12:30. Donations go to the Christian Temple youth group summer mission trip.) Come walk with us! Stewardship Today is Stewardship Catch-up Sunday: CPC depends on regular giving to meet its commitments and its budget. If you are up to date with your pledged or unpledged giving, thank you. If not, please plan to bring your giving up to date today. Our financial gifts and pledges are tangible signs of our faith and our commitment to God's work in this church. One way to avoid falling behind with your pledged or unpledged giving is to sign up for Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). This is done through Hubbard Press, which is affiliated with the PC(USA). We will be celebrating this milestone with special concerts by artists and groups that you have enjoyed over the years. You will recognize many of the names of the performers with three Catonsville natives, Jennifer Kloetzel, David Hardy and Andrew Gerle, returning during the year. We could use three or four volunteers per concert date just to make sure that everything runs smoothly: to greet at the doors, to get the sanctuary ready before and after the concert, and to give out programs. The start of the calendar year beyond Advent and approaching Lent is not exactly a slow period. As churches transition from the previous fiscal year ? sometimes with new officers ? there are always a lot of cumbersome facts to compile. Nevertheless, I?m convinced that there?s an easier way to collect and report church statistics. I?m in communication with the Office of the General Assembly to learn what training they might provide to help us better understand the value of statistical reporting and learn effective methods to accomplish the tasks in a timely manner. In the meantime, the Presbytery needs your help in developing a program to help its members prepare for the onerous task of reporting their statistics to the General Assembly. Your church may have a well-equipped reporter or reporting team willing to share their unique strategy for gathering church statistics; or, maybe you have a computer lab at your church and would be willing to host an on-line statistical training session. Perhaps, by networking, we can find a way to make this task less daunting and more; as well as, produce a better representation of our individual churches when our statistics are published in the annual Directory of PC(USA). If you are willing to share your knowledge about church reporting please call me at 410.433.2012 ext. 109 or email me at vbrown at baltimorepresbytery.org. I?ll compile your comments and present them October 7th at a meeting of the Administration Committee. Let?s see if we can make life a little easier for some key people in our churches this January. Go. _________________________________ Texts: Isaiah 55: 8-13 & Acts 8: 26-40 Message: The Art of Reading Scripture Preacher: Rev. Dr. Kenneth E. Kovacs "Do you understand what you're reading?" Philip asked the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts 8. "How can I," he replied, "unless someone guides me?" This simple exchange captures the problem we have interpreting scripture. We go to religious texts to deepen our understanding of God, ourselves, and the world. We believe these texts are inspired and should have authority. The Bible is a priceless treasure. We give copies to our children when they're very young. But do we really understand it? For many, the Bible is just too overwhelming to comprehend and too difficult to read, so they give up trying. And in our skeptical age we have so many questions about it. Mostly, can it be trusted? Can we trust the authors? Why were some texts excluded from the Bible when it was compiled? What do we do with the parts of the Bible that we disagree with? How do we know if what we have today is the original version? Where is the original version? We're slowly losing our ability to read the Bible and to have it read us. We're losing our ability to interpret it and to allow it to interpret us, that is tell us who we are and what we're called to do and be. As this happens, the world of scripture becomes a foreign, alien land, distant and removed, as does the One who speaks through its pages. Looking forward to seeing you on Sunday! Grace and peace, Ken ___________________________________________________ Things you need to know for the week September 28 - October 4, 2008 Christian Education Crossroads Senior High Youth Group has "Pizza at the Fromms" tonight from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at 111 Arbutus Avenue. Parents are invited to pick up a purple sheet from the Christian Education table in the education wing hallway to help introduce their children to this sacrament. Dorothy Boulton will also be visiting the younger classes in church school next week. Children and Youth Volunteers: Please be sure to see the announcement in this section to sign up for various ministries such as liturgist, child care volunteer, etc. These forms may be placed in the offering plates during worship or returned to the church office. CROP Walk: There are only two weeks left before the CROP Walk on Sunday, October 5, so be sure to pick up your forms today. Families are invited to walk together - choose either the 1K or 5K walk. No youth groups will meet next Sunday evening so you'll still have plenty of homework/study time. Hope we'll see you at the walk! (Details listed under the MISSION section of the announcements.) Adult Education: Sundays at 9 a.m. Child care is available. October 12: The Hunger Crisis at Home and in the World. Ted Heun will walk us through recent developments in the world food crisis, explain the 2008 focus of Bread for the World and then explain our Presbyterian efforts that are attempting to relieve the pain of hunger in our local communities. The Chesapeake Habitat Building on Faith weekend is October 25-26 and will not only celebrate the work done by Chesapeake's faith partners but will be a chance for all faith partners to meet, work side by side, and learn what each other is doing. October 26 will include the dedications for the United Churches houses. If you would like more information or would like to reserve a work spot for a group or individual for Saturday or Sunday, there are information flyers/reservation forms on the Welcome Table in fellowship hall. If you would like to attend, please contact Sid Turner (410)788-8427 or email vankoten at verizon.net. We need to hear from you by Thursday, October 2nd. Open to all those who can sit comfortably for one hour. Bring a guest! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
