Dr. Kenneth E. Kovacs On this World Communion Sunday we will gather at the Table of the Lord to celebrate the worldwide witness of the church of Jesus Christ. Through the power of the Holy Spirit we are connected with sisters and brothers all around the world, together seeking to serve the Risen Christ. We will have music from many cultures. The Peacemaking Offering will be received. Fellowship hour will be hosted by the Mission Committee, honoring Don Padgett's ministry through this church. Don joined CPC in 1995, coming to live in Maryland after serving as a PC(USA) mission worker in Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo). Through his friendships with Presbyterians there, we've been able to connect with countless Christians in Congo. Don retired from Interchurch Medical Assistance last December and will be, sadly (for us), moving home to Houston, Texas, in a few weeks. Come and wish him well as he begins a new phase of his journey. See you in worship this Sunday. Grace and peace, Ken ___________________________________________________ Things you need to know for the week October 5 -11, 2008 Worship World Communion Sunday, originally called World Wide Communion Sunday, originated in the Presbyterian Church (USA) in 1936. From the beginning, it was planned so that other denominations could make use of it and, after a few years, the idea spread beyond the Presbyterian Church. On this day we celebrate our oneness in Christ, the Prince of Peace, in the midst of the world we are called to serve - a world ever more in need of peacemaking. Christian Education Centsability - 5 Cents A Meal: Parents - please have your children bring their "cents" to church school on October 28. For more information, call 410-750-1941. Children at the Table: We will be celebrating the Lord's Supper this Sunday - World Communion Sunday. Parents are invited to pick up a purple sheet from the Christian Education table in the education wing hallway to help introduce their children to this sacrament. Dorothy Boulton will also be visiting the younger classes in church school next week. All Youth Groups: This Sunday is the CROP Walk! It's not too late to join us for the 1K or 5K walk. If you haven't yet registered, simply sponsor yourself for $5. You may wish see if you can locate any additional sponsors in fellowship hall, and don't forget to invite your parents to sponsor you too. We'll meet at Christian Temple, 5820 Edmondson Avenue, around 1:30 p.m. Money raised goes to our local food pantries; for national disaster relief projects; and for medicine, clean water, and self-development programs worldwide. Let's do mission together! Youth Groups - Sunday, October 12: Crossroads will not meet because of the Baltimore Presbytery Senior High Youth retreat. Rising Stars will gather from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at the church for outdoor games & small group discussion. We'll also assemble Halloween cards for our college students. Parents of College Age Students: Please be sure the church office has your child's address. We're sending out our first mailing (see above.) Halloween Festivities on October 26: Children in grades K - 5 are invited to the Nobles' house from 5:00-6:30 p.m. for Halloween fun sponsored by the Lord's Little People youth group. Dinner is included. Wear your costumes! RSVP to 410-719-0191 by October 19. This was a great time last year -- hope we'll see you there. Crossroads & Rising Stars are joining local youth groups for dinner, fun & games, and pumpkin tossing at St. John's UCC. Meet at the church at 5:45 p.m. for carpooling. Costumes encouraged. Second Sunday - Children's Worship: Next Sunday, K - 2nd graders are invited to gather for worship in the library right after the Children's Message (approx. 10:50 a.m.) They will return to the sanctuary to be present for the baptism of Ryan Scott Stivers. Adult Education: Sundays at 9 a.m. Child care is available. October 5 - Interpreting the Bible: The Importance of Context. We read the Bible because we believe that God can give meaning and direction to our lives through its words. However, it is no simple task to read and understand the Bible because there are real differences between the biblical context and our contemporary context. Contextual issues such as language, literary styles, history, and culture are essential to keep in mind as we read a Bible passage and search for meaning. Kathy Glennan will encourage us to find examples of common errors of interpretation and build a list of things to keep in mind when reading a particular Biblical passage. October 12: The Hunger Crisis at Home and in the World. Ted Heun will walk us through recent developments in the world food crisis, explain the 2008 focus of Bread for the World and then explain our Presbyterian efforts that are attempting to relieve the pain of hunger in our local communities. October 19 & 26: Meet John Calvin. John Calvin (1509-1564) was a major Protestant reformer whose influence continues to the present day. He was a leader of what became known as the Reformed branch of the Protestant Reformation. His theological writings put him in the front ranks of Protestant leaders, and his various types of writings were viewed as key resources for those who adopted his views. Calvin's theological genius is still looked to in the present time as a clear articulation of his understanding of the Christian gospel. In the Presbyterian tradition, Calvin's work is highly regarded as formative for understanding Christian faith and life. The first session (led by Ken Kovacs) discusses John Calvin the man, who he was in this context. The second session (led by Kathy Glennan) discusses the major themes of Calvin's theology. Thursday Morning Bible Study resumed on Thursday, October 2, at 10:30 a.m. in the library. There's still time to join the study. Led by Dr. Kovacs, this year's text will be the book of Job in the Hebrew scriptures. Why Job? Because I'm up for the challenge and I know many of you are too. It's one of the most difficult portions of scripture. Yet, the questions posed by this story - about God, about ourselves, about the world, about evil, about the reasons for human suffering - are just as relevant today as they were in the sixth century B.C., while Israel was in exile. Child care is available. Mission The CROP Hunger Walk is on its way! Our annual mission to raise money for our local food pantries/assistance organizations and to support the work of Church World Service is coming up on Sunday, October 5, leaving at 2 p.m. from Christian Temple, 5820 Edmondson Avenue. Sponsors and walkers (5K or 1K) are needed. Please see Vickie Lord in fellowship hall for more information. This event raised a record amount last year - it's fun, it's a ministry we share with over a dozen neighboring churches, and it gives life and hope to thousands of people in the name of Jesus Christ. (Lunch is available at 12:30. Donations go to the Christian Temple youth group summer mission trip.) Come walk with us! The Chesapeake Habitat Building on Faith weekend is October 25-26 and will not only celebrate the work done by Chesapeake's faith partners but will be a chance for all faith partners to meet, work side by side, and learn what each other is doing. October 26 will include the dedications for the United Churches houses. If you would like more information or would like to reserve a work spot for a group or individual for Saturday or Sunday, there are information flyers/reservation forms on the Welcome Table in fellowship hall. Stewardship Behind in your giving? CPC depends on regular giving to meet its commitments and its budget. If you are up to date with your pledged or unpledged giving, thank you. If not, please plan to bring your giving up to date today. Our financial gifts and pledges are tangible signs of our faith and our commitment to God's work in this church. One way to avoid falling behind with your pledged or unpledged giving is to sign up for Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). This is done through Hubbard Press, which is affiliated with the PC(USA). At no charge to you, this will automatically transfer the amount of your monthly giving from your account to the church's account, as of the 20th of each month. Simply complete the form located at the back of the sanctuary and on the Welcome Table in fellowship hall, attach a voided check, and return it to the church office marked to the attention of the Stewardship Committee. Questions? See the explanation of "What is EFT?" on the other side of the authorization form. My name is Julia Hartenstein and I am the new Mission and Justice Assistant at the Presbytery of Baltimore. I hope this article will allow you to get to know me better and help explain my ministry through the Presbytery of Baltimore. I am currently a graduate student at the University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Social Work. As part of my education I will be interning at the Presbytery three days a week until the end of April 2009. I am also a long-time member of the Lutheran (ELCA) church. It is not surprising, therefore, that I am deeply interested in social justice issues in the context of a faith community. During my time with the Presbytery I will focus on two projects related to mission and justice. First, I will be conducting an education program on Just Coffee which is a PC(USA) fair trade coffee project created and funded to address one of the root causes of labor migration from Mexico into the US. My second project involves the issue of homelessness. I know that many of you and your churches actively participate in homeless ministries and I imagine there are others of you who would like to become involved. I strongly encourage all of you to contact me to tell me about your ministry, to share your joys and concerns and to explore ways the Presbytery can assist you in your efforts. A large part of my job will be getting those of us who are interested in homeless ministries talking about how we can support one another in being the hands and feet and voice of Christ in this place. Please feel free to pass along my contact information to anyone you know who may be interested in either of these projects. I look forward to learning more about your ministries and to living out my calling as a disciple of Christ among you and with you for the sake of the whole world. Peace, Julia S. Yet, the questions posed by this story - about God, about ourselves, about the world, about evil, about the reasons for human suffering - are just as relevant today as they were in the sixth century B.C., while Israel was in exile. Here are just a few of the questions posed by this story: v Where is God in the worst moments of our emptiness? v What are we to do when experience casts doubt on what we have always believed? v Where in the world is justice? v Is there really any meaning to life? v How do I pray to the one who abandoned and betrayed me? Together, we'll wrestle with this text and with these questions (and plenty others). Child care will be provided by Anna Oguntimein, a new employee of the Child Care Center. Anna is a recent UMBC graduate. The bulk of her experience is in a Christian Academy and is thrilled to be providing care during Bible Study. Reverend Dr. Kenneth E. She was a deacon, a member of Presbyterian Women, and volunteered at the Presbyterian Home in Towson. There will be a Service of Witness to the Resurrection on Saturday, 18th October 2008, at 11:30 a.m., in the sanctuary. A reception will follow in fellowship hall. Dr. Kenneth E. Kovacs The gospel lectionary is Jesus' Parable of the Wedding Feast. A king sends out invitations to attend his son's wedding, the invitees come up with lame excuses, the king becomes angry, and then sends his servants into the streets to invite everyone they meet, "good and bad," into the banquet hall. Soon the king shows up for the party and spots one man with the wrong attire (missing a wedding robe), the king then throws him out into "outer darkness." What's going on here? Why is this robe so important? As we'll see, it's really the key to this puzzling parable - and why every Christian can't leave home without it (or enter the church, for that matter). See you in worship this Sunday. Grace and peace, Ken ___________________________________________________ Things you need to know for the week October 12-18, 2008 Child Care Center Come one come all! Peace and Justice Bread for the World Sunday: Our congregation supports the work of the Christian anti-poverty and anti-hunger group - Bread for the World - in three ways: (1) we make a yearly monetary contribution to the work of the organization, (2) we inform ourselves on the issues of poverty and hunger, and (3) we conduct an "OFERING OF LETTERS" twice a year. After worship, join us in fellowship hall to sign a letter to our U.S. Senators advocating support for the "Global Poverty Act." This legislation re-affirms our government's previous commitment to cut world wide poverty in half by 2015. More information is available in fellowship hall . . . or refer to www.bread.org. -Ted Heun, Peace and Justice Committee Mission The Chesapeake Habitat Building on Faith weekend is October 25-26 and will not only celebrate the work done by Chesapeake's faith partners but will be a chance for all faith partners to meet, work side by side, and learn what each other is doing. October 26 will include the dedications for the United Churches houses. If you would like more information or would like to reserve a work spot for a group or individual for Saturday or Sunday, there are information flyers/reservation forms on the Welcome Table in fellowship hall. Catonsville Presbyterian Concert Series When it comes to musical styles, some names are immediately recognizable. If you mention jazz or big band music, that brings to mind Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie and Chuck Mangione. The music these legends have produced reads like the A-List for anyone who enjoys jazz and big band numbers. If you come to the concert on Sunday, October 19, featuring the Columbia Jazz Band, you will be treated to the sweet sounds of all these great musicians and composers. You will hear Porter's "You Do Something To Me." How about Gershwin's "Love Is Here To Stay"? Or maybe you would love to hear Gillespie's "A Night In Tunisia" or Count Basie's "Jumpin' At The Woodside." Whatever your favorites, the Catonsville Presbyterian Concert Series will present a lively afternoon of jazz and big band music for your listening pleasure. Please join us at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary as we continue the celebration of our 10th season of concerts. A reception in fellowship hall follows the concert. Yes! You read correctly, a Presbyterian Benedictine. But is it so far-fetched? I?m not sure what John Calvin or John Knox would have to say about it, but frankly, I don?t really care. The Presbyterian Church today is not the puritanical Calvinist institution that it once was, and I am glad for that. Oh, but aren?t we losing our heritage as Presbyterians? No, we?re not! We?re discovering a broader identity as Christians, and that means being able to rejoice in both a gospel revival and high mass, even while still proudly calling ourselves Presbyterians. My experience with the Rule of St. Benedict began with Mother Elizabeth, an Episcopal priest from Mt. Savage, which is not far from the town in which I live now. I had already read this ?obsolete? medieval text once before, in my church history class in seminary, and remember thinking that I was glad we aren?t confined to such rigidity in the church today. But Mother Elizabeth helped me to take a fresh look at this ?relevant? modern text, and I saw how Benedict?s teachings actually point toward a more flexible and balanced relationship with Christ. I learned that the Christian life of discipleship is not different for a Benedictine than it is for anyone else; but, for a Benedictine, living by the Rule brings a unique balance and flow to that life. As a pastor, it is so important to develop a spiritual life. If we cannot grow spiritually, how can we expect our congregations to grow spiritually? My journey with the Rule has led me to the Order of the Holy Cross, an Anglican Benedictine order rooted in New York. Their Associate?s Rule (some orders call them oblates) promotes the application of this fifteen hundred year-old monastic handbook to everyday, twenty-first century life. I recommend this to anyone seeking to live a more balanced life of Christian discipleship that is fortified by the accountability and support of a dedicated Christian community. It?s not Presbyterian, and it may not be for everyone, but it has something to offer and teach to everyone. May you grow in love for one another, and for Christ, Tom Morgan FPC Barton and Lonaconing Associate of Holy Cross To learn more about the Order of the Holy Cross, visit http://www.holycrossmonastery.com Inside this Issue Take Note/Act Now ? These are challenging times. Both Wall St. and Main St. are in this predicament together, whether we have money in the market or not. But where is God in all of this? Does God have anything to do with the Dow? What kind of guidance and hope can we receive from scripture? The story of Job is one place to start; but it's Jesus, without a MBA, who has a lot to teach us about money and where it fits in the Christian life. See you in worship this Sunday. Adult Education: Sundays at 9 a.m. Child care is available. Peace and Justice Christian as Citizen: Gambling Referendum. Question 2 on the November ballot will be the referendum to amend the Maryland State Constitution to allow 15,000 slot machines at five selected sites. Presbyterians believe that as voters in a democracy we have free will to make choices on candidates and ballot issues. The PCUSA has adopted policies on certain issues that encompass moral choices to help people of faith make choices consistent with our value system. The choice is yours, but we as a religious institution have taken this position on gambling: 1. Our faith tradition has consistently opposed all gambling, especially state sponsored, as a way to fund government. Typically those who gamble the most are the people who can least afford it. Gambling is a deceptive funding source because the new revenue will not solve the state's budget problems. 2. The Rev. Terry Schoener preached on this topic from our pulpit this past summer. He made three points why we oppose gambling. 3. This was his first point: "There is only one God who controls our destiny. Gambling flirts with another god whose name is 'Lady Luck.' Gambling casinos are tragic places, people sacrificing and becoming the sacrifice on Lady Luck's altar, sacrificing to a god who does you no good." Additional information may be found on the Welcome Table in fellowship hall. Mission The Chesapeake Habitat Building on Faith weekend is October 25-26 and will not only celebrate the work done by Chesapeake's faith partners but will be a chance for all faith partners to meet, work side by side, and learn what each other is doing. October 26 will include the dedications for the United Churches houses. If you would like more information or would like to reserve a work spot for a group or individual for Saturday or Sunday, there are information flyers/reservation forms on the Welcome Table in fellowship hall. Dr. J. Barrie Shepherd - noted preacher, pastor, writer, and poet. Barrie will share his vision for "a church as generous and just as God's grace." Suggested gift amount is $100, but all gifts are welcome. If you're interested in attending, please r. s. v. p. to Ken Kovacs by 29th October at KKovacs at catonsvillepresb.org. There is never a charge for concerts but your donations are always gratefully accepted. Operation Hope has attracted hundreds of millions of dollars and reinvested in people who otherwise were left out and left behind. When asked why he did this, Bryant answered, In 1992 I was twenty-six and financially successful but I wasn't happy. When the riots broke out I was appalled by the indifference to the plight of people without hope. I started Operation Hope out of guilt and pain and a need to heal myself. I keep doing it because the key to happiness is to stop focusing on me and start focusing on we. My family still has everything we need, and I feel lucky that I made my decision at twenty-six instead of waiting until I was seventy."* Our text for this coming Sunday asks us to love God and love our neighbor. We also encounter our Stewardship theme of 2009: "For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." As seen in the above vignette, John Bryant has found his treasure in a life of giving, a life of love. How do we find our treasure? Let's get together and have a look at the map. See you in worship! November 2: How Should Christians Vote? While the separation of church and state precludes endorsement of candidates in a political election, it does not prevent us from taking our Christian values into the polling place. This study will address the most helpful ways our faith can inform our voting behaviors and will give us the opportunity to reflect on some criteria to use when considering any political candidate running for public office. Led by Ken Kovacs November 9: Scriptural Foundations for Mission. Why is mission so central to ministry? Because the Bible tells us so. How does scripture inform our commitment to mission in the 21st century? What are the biblical foundations for mission? In this light, we will look at CPC's approach toward mission and assess our work as a church. Come join the discussion. Led by Ken Kovacs Mission Please join us today for a great Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity event! Tony, Tammi, and Kim will receive the keys to their very first homes! These three homes have been built by volunteers from Thrivent Builds and United Churches. At 1:30, we'll meet in front of 1101-1105 Ward Street for words from volunteers, the new homeowners, and neighborhood partners. A representative from the mayor's office will be attending and Senator Cardin has been invited. This is a great moment for Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity (celebrating our first new construction), for Washington Village Pigtown and its partner organizations, and for three new home owners. We hope to see you there! -Barbara Rice Outreach Member Data Form: The Outreach Committee is working to update member information. In November, we will be distributing a "Member Data Form." Our database allows us to keep addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers but this form also has room for you to list your children's names and ages and your skills and areas of interest and knowledge. We would like emergency contact information, too, just as a precaution in case an emergency does occur. Our goal is to keep accurate records and to have a talent bank. The talent bank will be a reference to locate resources among the congregation when the church needs specialized advice or assistance. Our members are blessed with a variety of knowledge, skills, and talents. If you have questions please call Cindy Bolognese, 410-247-4434. The Outreach Committee will hand out the forms during Fellowship Hour on the Sundays in November. Please make corrections as necessary and fill in any blanks. There will be drop boxes at the back of the sanctuary and in fellowship hall, or you may mail it to the church office, attention: Outreach. We will be very discrete with your personal information. Adventure East - Part I On October 4, many of us were looking forward to seeing Part I of a fabulous two-part travelogue presented by Bill and Miriam Hyde, who had brought us a most interesting slide show on the Lewis and Clarke expedition earlier this year. Alas! It was not to be. However, that show has been rescheduled for November 8 (7 p.m. in the library), the date originally planned for Part II. "Adventure East-A Taste of the Exotic" Part I takes our intrepid duo from Venice to Mombasa as they indulge their interest in photography, history, geography, and culture. It will introduce the audience to a world of gondolas, Greek ruins, gourmet meals, holy places, musical shows, Wonders of the World (and mankind), pampered lifestyles, gigantic temples and Pharaohs' tombs. Included in the itinerary are Venice, Olympia, Athens, Jerusalem, the Galilee, Cairo, the Suez Canal, Sagafa (say what?), and Mumbasa. Many of us will never have the opportunity to visit these exotic locations and will have a chance to experience them vicariously. Light refreshments will be served after the show. Please let me know if you can contribute goodies. Also, be sure to let me know if you plan to attend so we can have adequate seating. You can sign up in fellowship hall a couple of Sundays before the show or contact me at 410-788-8427, vankoten at verizon.com. These founders sought to reform the notion that worship was pristinely preserved for Sunday. More importantly, they believed that the Church should be a part of the everyday lives of working people. To integrate these principles of work and worship, the founders organized groups of ministers and workers in Iona (where the first successful Christian community in Scotland had been formed in 563 A.D.) for community building projects; and, together, they celebrated the conclusion of each task with prayer and worship. The restoration of the Iona Abbey, a massive medieval ruin, has become the centerpiece for the ideals of the Iona Community, which continues to thrive in Europe 70 years later. The principles and practices of the Iona Community have recently gained ground in America, where pastors John Dillon and Scott Blythe, both ministers of the Presbytery of Baltimore, incorporate the group?s ideals in their personal lives and ministry. ?The community is my spiritual family, my compass of faith and a constant inspiration and challenge,? explained Rev. Dillon, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Cumberland and a member of the Iona Community for 20 years. Currently, the group is a scattered community of 260 members and 3,200 associates and friends ? all of various denominations. The community is committed to ecumenism and interfaith dialogue, youth, peace, justice and the environment. Members follow a five-fold rule: daily prayer and Bible study; sharing and accounting for monetary expenditures; planning and accounting for the use of time; action for justice, peace and the integrity of creation; and gathering together and being accountable to each other. Rev. Scott Blythe, of Perry Hall Presbyterian church, joined the Iona Community while working with youth helping to restore the Abbey in his native Scotland. ?The community was born of its founder?s strong socialist views and that has translated into modern day activism for campaigning for peace and justice in the world,? he said. ?Each member has to live that rule as it pertains to their life and seek to incorporate these [principles] as a means to integrate faith and work life into one.? And who are the saints? The ones claimed by the grace of Jesus Christ. The same Christ who holds us together in a vast communion, a fellowship that spans time and space. At the Communion table of our Lord we will remember the members of the church and friends who have died this year, give thanks for their life and witness among us, and give thanks to God through Christ for the communion of the saints. See you in worship this Sunday. November 2: How Should Christians Vote? (November 2) While the separation of church and state precludes endorsement of candidates in a political election, it does not prevent us from taking our Christian values into the polling place. This study will address the most helpful ways our faith can inform our voting behaviors and will give us the opportunity to reflect on some criteria to use when considering any political candidate running for public office. Led by Ken Kovacs. November 9: Scriptural Foundations for Mission. Why is mission so central to ministry? Because the Bible tells us so. How does scripture inform our commitment to mission in the 21st century? What are the biblical foundations for mission? In this light, we will look at CPC?s approach toward mission and assess our work as a church. Come join the discussion. Led by Ken Kovacs November 16: Introduction to Spiritual Disciplines. Spiritual disciplines are regular practices and actions that are intended to facilitate spiritual growth and ultimately bring about transformation. How did they originate and how have they evolved? What relevance do they have for twenty-first-century Christians? Join us for an introduction to these practices. Which disciplines help us grow in truth, wisdom, hope, and love and allow us to live into our faith. Led by Adam Allen Thursday Morning Bible Study resumed on Thursday, October 2, at 10:30 a.m. in the library. There?s still time to join the study. Led by Dr. Kovacs, this year?s text will be the book of Job in the Hebrew scriptures. Why Job? Because I?m up for the challenge and I know many of you are too. It?s one of the most difficult portions of scripture. Yet, the questions posed by this story ? about God, about ourselves, about the world, about evil, about the reasons for human suffering ? are just as relevant today as they were in the sixth century B.C., while Israel was in exile. Child care is available. Outreach Member Data Form: The Outreach Committee is working to update member information. In November, we will be distributing a ?Member Data Form.? Our database allows us to keep addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers but this form also has room for you to list your children?s names and ages and your skills and areas of interest and knowledge. Thank you for your help. Gambling is a deceptive funding source because the new revenue will not solve the state?s budget problems. 2. The Rev. Terry Schoener preached on this topic from our pulpit this past summer. He made three points why we oppose gambling. 3. This was his first point: ?There is only one God who controls our destiny. Gambling flirts with another god whose name is ?Lady Luck.? Gambling casinos are tragic places, people sacrificing and becoming the sacrifice on Lady Luck?s altar, sacrificing to a god who does you no good.?
