November 2:??How Should Christians Vote??While the separation of church and state precludes endorsement of candidates in a political election, it does not prevent us from taking our Christian values into the polling place. This study will address the most helpful ways our faith can inform our voting behaviors and will give us the opportunity?to reflect on some criteria to use when considering any political candidate?running for public office.??Led by Ken Kovacs.

THE SHOW WILL GO ON!
Bill and Miriam Hyde have graciously agreed to put on their fabulous slide show in the library on Saturday, November 8 at 7:00 p.m. regardless of the size of the audience. Nevertheless, we would like to have a good turnout. "Adventure East-A Taste of the Exotic" Part I takes our intrepid duo from Venice to Mombasa as they indulge their interest in photography, history, geography, and culture. It will introduce the audience to a world of gondolas, Greek ruins, gourmet meals, holy places, musical shows, Wonders of the World (and mankind), pampered lifestyles, gigantic temples and Pharoahs' tombs. Included in the itinerary are: Venice, Olympia, Athens, Jerusalem, the Galilee, Cairo, the Suez Canal, Sagafa , and Mumbasa. Many of us will never have the opportunity to visit these exotic locations and will have a chance to experience them vicariously. All are welcome, whether or not you signed up. Light refreshments will be served after the show. Remember if you volunteer to contribute goodies that the kitchen will not be available, so bring something that does not need to be prepared, heated, or kept cool. Sponsored by Gallimaufry.

Worship Preview
Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time
for the week of November 9, 2008
Shechem - Site of Joshua's address to the Tribes of Israel
_____________________________________________________
Text: Matthew 25: 1 - 13; Joshua 24: 103a, 14 - 25
Intentional Living, Intentional Giving
Way back in my youth, as a rebellious and sulky teenager, I complained to my mother one Saturday evening about having to go to church. Couldn't I stay home and sleep in on Sunday morning? Her response to me was to quote this passage from the book of Joshua: As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Needless to say, we showed up on time for church school and worship the next day.
While I definitely resented it at the time, I have come to ponder this phrase during the intervening years. As an adult, I have been faced with my own choices: Whom will you serve? It is a question every person of faith and every faith community is called to answer.
During this Stewardship season, let us gather to ask how we effectively assess our lives and make intentional, responsible, faithful and loving choices? Whom do we serve?
See you in worship --
Dorothy

2008 Spiritual Growth Through Giving
Message-ID: <004f01c94370$d44af490$7ce0ddb0$@org>
November 10, 2008
Giving is a Spiritual Growth Experience
"Listen carefully to what I am saying?and be wary of the shrewd advice that
tells you how to get ahead in the world on your own. Giving, not getting, is
the way. Generosity begets generosity."
Mark 4:24-25 (Message)
_______________
Growing spiritually causes me to focus one way. . . on God. And, while my
spiritual growth leads me foremost toward a more intimate relationship with
God; it also helps me to have a more intimate relationship with my ordinal
self.
What are the paths to spiritual growth? Worship, prayer, music, art,
meditation, loving God, loving others, loving ourselves, being reborn,
nature, reading scripture, the sacraments of baptism and communion ? these
are just some of the paths chosen, though there are many more. Each person
must explore what works best for him or her. And, although we must remain
vigilant, one sometimes realizes that what works in one season of life may
change as the years pass.
All paths have a spiritual economy and not a worldly economy. When the cup
is half full and some is removed one has less ? right! That is not the way
of spiritual growth. The more you give love away the more love you have. The
more time you spend in prayer the more you can get done. The more money you
give the more you are able to give. That?s right, giving is a spiritual
growth experience, too.
Often, the most generous people supporting a cause do not necessarily have
the most to give but have long been the best givers. When someone writes a
check and says thank you for giving me a chance to give they grow
spiritually ? that?s when you get a glimpse that there is something
spiritual going on in giving.
While growing up, I watched my father bring home his hard-earned pay in cash
at the end of each week. He had a system of envelopes in a box to pay the
bills: mortgage, utilities, phone, insurance, etc. However, the envelope
for church tithes was in front. It was stuffed with cash first. My mother,
sometimes, complained about the church getting the first 10%. But even
after Dad died she still used the same system because she understood that
God provided for her and that she was connected to God by giving.
Grow spiritually by giving.

Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Pledge Dedication Sunday
26011383_1775530cbe[1].jpg
_______________________________
Lectionary Texts: Psalm 123 & Matthew 25: 14-30
Message: Hearts in the Right Place
Preacher: Rev. Dr. Kenneth E. Kovacs
In the marvelous providence of God, the lectionary reading for this week
just happens to complement a Sunday in which we present our 2009 pledge
commitments to God's work. The image above might be a little jarring and,
in the eyes of some, overtly secular, but it reflects the central
"character" in Jesus' Parable of the Talents in Matthew 25. "Talents" is
misleading because it really means money, in fact, a whole lot of money, an
enormous amount of money. Here is one of Jesus' strongest and most direct
teachings on the use of money for the Christian. God really cares about how
we share our resources. How we share what has been given to us ultimately
depends upon our image of God, which is really what the parable is about.
If our image of God is wrong, then our lives will show it. Get the image
right and it will be easier for us to connect our hearts with the One we
treasure. "For where your treasure is, there you heart will be also
(Matthew 6:21)." Because God really cares about the health of our hearts.
Grace and peace,
Ken

Christian Education
The rosebud on the Communion table this Sunday is in honor of Genevieve
Dasol Bolognese, born February 3, 2008. Cindy and Jeff Bolognese brought
Genevieve home from Seoul, Korea, on October 10.
Children and Parents: Please remember to keep adding to your penny banks
each and every meal for the "Cents-ability - 5 cents a meal" program.
Crossroads Senior High youth group meets tonight, 5:30-7:30 p.m., at 111
Arbutus Avenue for "Pizza at the Fromms."
Plus, there are a couple of spaces left on our World Religions
weekend. See Dorothy Boulton today for info.
This coming Saturday, November 22, meet at 9:00 a.m., 111 Arbutus
Avenue, for our Leaf-Raking fundraiser.
Stewardship with Children and Youth: Activity books and pledge cards are
available on the CE table in the education wing.
Adult Education: Sundays at 9 a.m. Child care is available.
November 16: Introduction to Spiritual Disciplines. Spiritual disciplines
are regular practices and actions that are intended to facilitate spiritual
growth and ultimately bring about transformation. How did they originate and
how have they evolved? What relevance do they have for twenty-first-century
Christians? Join us for an introduction to these practices. Which
disciplines help us grow in truth, wisdom, hope, and love and allow us to
live into our faith. Led by Adam Allen
November 23: Praying the Psalms. Psalms may be the most contemporary book
in the whole Bible. The realities of life more than two millennia ago were
certainly different from the realities of our world; however, the human
condition is not that different. Love for and trust in God for us, as well
as doubt and disbelief, are similar to what the psalmist knew. Relationships
with others that bring love and commitment, as well as separation and pain,
are not unlike what the psalmist experienced. This session explores the
various types of psalms and prayers and invites us to use the psalms in our
daily lives. Led by Kathy Glennan.
Advent I - November 30: Advent Hymns. Why don't we start singing those
familiar and well-loved Christmas carols in church after Thanksgiving? After
all, we've been hearing them in the mall since just after Halloween. Why do
we have to wait until closer to Christmas before singing "O Little Town of
Bethlehem" or "Silent Night" in the sanctuary? Join us for an exploration of
Advent hymns and their special place in the liturgical calendar. Led by Doug
Heist.
Mission
Join us in welcoming Dr. Mike Haninger and Nancy Haninger to CPC tomorrow,
November 17. They are our PCUSA Missionaries in the Democratic Republic of
Congo. We look forward to talking with them in person about their projects
with Good Shepherd Hospital and The Moringa Tree Project.
Lunch will be provided in the library. Please RSVP to Vickie Lord at

Member Data Form: The Outreach Committee is working to update member
information and will be handing out the Member Data Forms during Fellowship
Hour on the Sundays in November. Our database allows us to keep addresses,
email addresses, and phone numbers but this form also has room for you to
list your children's names and ages and your skills and areas of interest
and knowledge. We would like emergency contact information, too, just as a
precaution in case an emergency does occur.
Our goal is to keep accurate records and to have a talent bank.
The talent bank will be a reference to locate resources among the
congregation when the church needs specialized advice or assistance. Our
members are blessed with a variety of knowledge, skills, and talents. If you
have questions please call Cindy Bolognese, 410-247-4434.
Please make corrections on the form and fill in any blanks.
There will be drop boxes at the back of the sanctuary and in fellowship
hall, or you may mail it to the church office, attention: Outreach. We will
be very discrete with your personal information. Thank you for your help.
Not sure what's going on at Catonsville Presbyterian? Check out our website
at www.catonsvillepresb.org.
Be sure to join our email list if you would like to find out about special
events, upcoming worship, educational opportunities, and announcements
regarding members and friends of the church. To become part of this service,
go to the home page of our website and click on About Us, then Contact Us.

Santi School - Help Us Grow
The Santi School Project has entered a contest. We need your help! In
November, we're competing to win a place on GlobalGiving.com, a website that
collects donations on behalf of charities. Winning our own permanent spot on
the site will broaden our reach and boost our fundraising in the future.
WHAT WE NEED TO DO
. Raise at least $3,000 from at least 75 different donors. The deadline
for donations is Friday, November 21, 2008.
. If we meet the goal, then the Santi School Project will remain on
GlobalGiving.com, where we can fundraise for our school in Ramche, Nepal.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
. Make a donation NOW. We are competing against other nonprofit groups;
if we raise the most money by November 21, then we will get an additional
$4,000 from GlobalGiving.
. Tell your friends, family and coworkers about us. It's important that
we receive donations from at least 75 different people.
. Spread the word in places you may have friends and contacts: Facebook,
MySpace, LinkedIn, your book group, alumni association, or your
child's playgroup.
. Donate online:

" God is a God of abundance, not a god of scarcity. .God doesn't give us
just enough.
God gives us more than enough: more bread and fish than we can eat, more
love than we dared to ask for.
God is a generous giver, but we can only see and enjoy God's generosity when
we love God with all of our hearts, minds, and strength.
As long as we say, "I will love you, God, but first show me your
generosity," we will remain distant from God and unable to experience what
God truly wants to give us, which is life and life in abundance.

November 17, 2008
PEOPLE ARE HUNGRY
Jesus said: "You give them something to eat . . . as you do it for one of
the least of these, you do it for me.?
__________
People are hungry.
This is what Eva Seiler told me on a recent visit to the Hagerstown
Presbyterian Church?s soup kitchen. Eva has managed the soup kitchen for
five years, but that day she was worried because the church?s account to
purchase food was down to $5. Nancy Bennett of Trinity Presbyterian Church
tried to tell me the same thing last summer, explaining that her church
?just didn?t have enough food in its food bank to serve everyone who comes.?
In Baltimore, Rev. Tanya Wade tells me that more and more people are
telephoning, writing and showing up on Fridays at Knox Presbyterian Church
for bags of food and hot meals.
I hear it . . . and, now I want to tell you. People are hungry, a lot of
people ? and, they?re going to get a lot hungrier. Some folks are losing
their homes; some can?t pay their bills; some wonder if they will have a job
tomorrow. And, in the midst of all these challenges, people are hungry.
We have many food pantries operating from churches throughout the Presbytery
of Baltimore: First of Bel Air, Harundale, Grove, Trinity, Knox, Grace and
Hagerstown are just a few among them. Our brothers and sisters in Christ
are trying so hard to help, but they need help, as well. At Thursday?s 831st
Presbytery Meeting, Council has approved a request from the Peace & Justice
Committee to ask for an offering to benefit congregations operating food
banks or those who would like to open a new food bank. The committee will
also offer the balance of the Cents-Ability Hunger Fund ? approximately
$1,200 ? to support church food and hunger programs.
Can you help, too, and bring a check from your mission fund to fill empty
grocery bags? Can you bring some dry goods for the empty shelves? People
are hungry. Would you reach into the heart of your own congregations and
consider initiating a food drive to benefit a soup kitchen or food pantry in
the Presbytery?
Thank you. May God bless your efforts to stem this tide of hunger, if only
for now ?
Because, God?s people are hungry.

Reign of Christ Sunday
Christos Pantocrator (Christ Almighty), sixth century Byzantine mosaic,
Church of Hagia Sophia,
Istanbul, Turkey
_______________________________
Texts: Psalm 100 & Matthew 25: 31-36
Message: With Grateful Hearts
Preacher: Rev. Dr. Kenneth E. Kovacs
This Sunday marks the culminating day of the liturgical calendar which lifts
up the belief that Christ is enthroned with God and reigns over the universe
with benign power, justice, and grace. It's the last Sunday of the
liturgical year, with lectionary texts us moving us toward "last things,"
texts which say something about the goal and purpose of history and our
lives with in it. It's a Sunday that affirms that God through Christ is in
control, which means we don't have to be. Instead, we are now free to live
the way God intends - offering up grateful hearts of praise for the endless
bounty of God's love and then caring for all of God's children who live
under the dome of God's protective care.
So come, ye thankful people, come. Let us worship Christ!
Grace and peace,
Ken

will receive Advent calendars to help count down the days before Christmas;
church school classes will have a special Advent time - with guest visitors
each week; Music with Mr. Bob will have us all humming Advent and Christmas
tunes; we'll make ornaments, cards & wreaths at The Big Advent Feast; we'll
gather for a potluck dinner that same night . . . it's an exciting time in
the life of our church. Hope you'll join us each week to be part of this
holy season.
Advent Resources: Advent calendars will be distributed next week to our
younger children. Additional resources will also be available on the CE
table in the education wing hallway. Please help yourself. There are also
great online resources for families: check out
www.rca.org and www.teachingmom.com to start
you off.
Stewardship with Children and Youth: Activity books and pledge cards are
still available on the CE table in the education wing.
Youth Groups: There are no youth group meetings this weekend, but we hope to
see you all at The Big Advent Feast next Sunday night. Have a happy
Thanksgiving holiday, everyone!
Our annual Gift Collection for the McKim Community Center will begin on
November 30, running through December 14. Please help us provide gifts for
children and teens in this 100-year-old East Baltimore ministry. New,
unwrapped gifts can be placed in the bins in fellowship hall. Neat gift
ideas: How about a basketball or a board game? It's probably going to be a
tough Christmas for many of our neighbors; let's help make the season
bright.
Looking ahead:
Crossroads meets from 6-7:30 p.m. at the church on Sunday, December 7. Plan
for a possible outdoor adventure. The last "Pizza with the Fromms" is right
after caroling on Saturday, December 13. And don't forget, we're going to
volunteer at Our Daily Bread on Wednesday morning, December 31.
Rising Stars is going on a field trip to see The Best Christmas Pageant
Ever! on Sunday, December 14, at the Fells Point Theater, leaving from the
church at 6:00 p.m. Parents & families are invited too. Ticket prices are
approximately $11.50 per person. Beth Goldsby Allen will provide details.
The congregation is invited to
THE BIG ADVENT FEAST
Sunday, November 30
Come for part, or come for all
5:15-6:00 p.m.: Wreath-making & Crafts
6:00-7:00 p.m.: Dinner & Fellowship
The Details:
Wreath materials will cost $8, all other crafts are free.
Main dish will be provided (small donation requested).
Due to kitchen restraints during renovation, potluck items - side dish or
dessert - should be non-refrigerated; kitchen will not be accessible for any
meal prep or heating.
Adult Education: Sundays at 9 a.m. Child care is available.
Relationships with others that bring love and commitment, as well as
separation and pain, are not unlike what the psalmist experienced. This
session explores the various types of psalms and prayers and invite us to
use the psalms in our daily lives. Led by Kathy Glennan.
Sing a Song of Bethlehem:
The Incarnation through the Music of the Church
November 30: Why don't we start singing those familiar and well-loved
Christmas carols in church after Thanksgiving? After all, we've been hearing
them in the mall since just after Halloween. Why do we have to wait until
closer to Christmas before singing "O Little Town of Bethlehem" or "Silent
Night" in the sanctuary? Join us for an exploration of Advent hymns and
their special place in the liturgical calendar. Led by Doug Heist.
December 7: We will look at the connection between religious experience and
the imaginative arts - how the Christmas story itself serves as the spark of
so much creativity. Greg Knauf will share what it was like to compose his
anthem, "Gloria," which was included in the St. Olaf Choir Christmas concert
in 2007. Led by Ken Kovacs.
December 14: We will see how the carols and hymns of the season have
actually distorted our hearing of the Christmas story. Bring a CD recording
of your most meaningful Christmas piece to share with the group. Led by Ken
Kovacs.
December 21: The focus will be on the angels' song in Luke 2, specifically
the Gloria and the many musical renderings of this experience. Led by Ken
Kovacs.
Outreach
Member Data Form: The Outreach Committee is working to update member
information. In November, we will be distributing a "Member Data Form." Our
database allows us to keep addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers but
this form also has room for you to list your children's names and ages and
your skills and areas of interest and knowledge. We would like emergency
contact information, too, just as a precaution in case an emergency does
occur.
Our goal is to keep accurate records and to have a talent bank. The talent
bank will be a reference to locate resources among the congregation when the
church needs specialized advice or assistance. Our members are blessed with
a variety of knowledge, skills, and talents. If you have questions please
call Cindy Bolognese, 410-247-4434.
The Outreach Committee will hand out the forms during Fellowship Hour on the
Sundays in November. Please make corrections as necessary and fill in any
blanks. There will be drop boxes at the back of the sanctuary and in
fellowship hall, or you may mail it to the church office, attention:
Outreach. We will be very discrete with your personal information. Thank you
for your help.
Peace and Justice
Christian as Citizen: Gambling Referendum. Question 2 on the November ballot
will be the referendum to amend the Maryland State Constitution to allow
15,000 slot machines at five selected sites.
Presbyterians believe that as voters in a democracy we have free will to
make choices on candidates and ballot issues. The PCUSA has adopted policies
on certain issues that encompass moral choices to help people of faith make
choices consistent with our value system. The choice is yours, but we as a
religious institution have taken this position on gambling:
1. Our faith tradition has consistently opposed all gambling,
especially state sponsored, as a way to fund government. Typically those who
gamble the most are the people who can least afford it. Gambling is a
deceptive funding source because the new revenue will not solve the state's
budget problems.
2. The Rev. Terry Schoener preached on this topic from our pulpit
this past summer. He made three points why we oppose gambling.
3. This was his first point: "There is only one God who controls our
destiny. Gambling flirts with another god whose name is 'Lady Luck.'
Gambling casinos are tragic places, people sacrificing and becoming the
sacrifice on Lady Luck's altar, sacrificing to a god who does you no good."
Additional information may be found on the Welcome Table in fellowship hall.

mix, canned goods, grocery cards and more! Catonsville Emergency Food
Ministries (CEFM) will be distributing these in the coming week. If you
would like to volunteer to help, they are located in Catonsville at 25

Presbytery Committees . . .
Where can you fit in?
In recent years, the Presbytery of Baltimore has evolved into an organization largely guided by grass-root, committee leadership. As a result, a decision by the transformation committee to engage Deep Shift is helping 12 churches re-determine their relationship with God and the world; the Mission committee's plan to fight hunger and homelessness supports scores of community assistance and church-based food programs; and, the New Church Development committee continues to spread the Word by seeding congregations throughout the Presbytery. Meanwhile, six new committees have taken root to do the work of Christ.
Yes, there is much to do - but, still, far too few to get it done. Given such a challenge, one may ask where do I fit in?
Wherever you can.
The Presbytery Nominating Committee needs your help to fill vacancies on a number of committees, boards and councils. There's a seat for you or an elder or some other church member on one or more of the following committees: Administration, Council, Vision, Evangelism and Church Growth, New Church Development, Committee on Ministry, Mission, Peace and Justice, Permanent Judicial Commission, Preparation for Ministry, Representation, Trustees and United Presbyterian Ministries. Members are, particularly, in need for the Christian Education, Youth, Congregational Nurture, Stewardship and Mission Interpretation committees.
Most committees meet once a month and members are only obligated to serve two years. If you are interested in serving or know someone who is, please inform the Nominating Committee. To do so, simply click Committ?ee Nomination, complete, and submit the form to the Presbytery of Baltimore.
You can also pick up a nominating form at the Presbytery Office or email me with your names at ara49 at aol., and I will ensure that that the Nominating Committee receives your application. The Nominating committee will review the application and contact the interested member about his or her appointment prior to approval at the next Stated Meeting of the Presbytery.
Let us all take responsibility to move Christ's church into the future through our work in the Presbytery. Thanks for your support.

Worship Preview
First Sunday in Advent
________________________________________
Text: Isaiah 60:1-3, Mark 13:24-37
HOPE
Dear Friends:
It's difficult to shift gears: we're still recovering from our Thanksgiving dinners, and quite honestly, our earliest thoughts of Christmas seem only to urge us towards the shopping mall.
But now is the time to prepare for the Christ child.
Now is the time to claim our Advent hope.
I look forward to seeing you in worship as we light the first candle of the season. In this time of anxiety, let us proclaim the One who is to come - the light of the world -- our hope, our peace, our love, our joy.
See you Sunday,
Dorothy

For the week of November 30,, 2008
The announcements are attached.
In the advent seasons,
When the past has fled,
Unasked, away
And there is nothing left to do but wait,
God, shelter us.
Be our surrounding darkness;
Be fertile soil
Out of which hope springs
In due time.
In uncertain times,
Help us to greet the dawn
And labor on, love on,
In faith awaiting your purpose
Hid in you
Waiting to be born
In due time.
