O strong Ram, which hast battered heaven for me, Mild Lamb, which with thy blood, hast marked the path; Bright Torch, which shin'st, that I the way may see..." - from Ascension, by John Donne Texts: Psalm 93, Acts 1: 1-14 Sermon: This Ain't No Air Show Preacher: Rev. Dr. Terry Schoener "Going and Coming" Just as there are forty days leading up to Easter called Lent, following Easter there are forty days during which the resurrected Christ made one appearance after another. Not just to disciples in the upper room but on the road, and to hundreds of people at one time. But at the end of forty days his physical appearances to individuals and groups come to an abrupt end with what is called "the ascension." It was a puzzlement to them, and it is a puzzlement to us. Who is going to guide us? He had told them this would happen, that he would return to the God-head thereby releasing a different presence of the same God called the "Holy Spirit." This Sunday we will meet at the Lord's Table for Ascension Sunday, the conclusion of Eastertide and Jesus' going back to God. A week from Sunday, then, will be fifty days after Easter called Pentecost Sunday marking God's Holy Spirit coming to be immediately available to everyone. See you in worship, Terry Schoener __________________________________ Things you need to know. Growing in Grace - Explore the meaning of your faith. Ask. Seek. Find. Sunday mornings, 9:00 a.m. Child care provided. April 27, May 4 and 11 - Transforming Congregational Culture. For more than four months, a dedicated group of members have studied Anthony Robinson's extremely insightful and highly relevant book, Transforming Congregational Culture, written to help mainline churches (like our own) understand the massive cultural changes we have experienced over the last forty years. These changes pose a considerable challenge, but also an amazing opportunity for the church to discover anew what Christ is calling us to be and become. What does Christ desire for the church? What are we called to do and why? Led by Vicki Haupt, Ben Ebersole, Maggie Cooper, and Todd Walther. May 18 - What is the Emergent Church? The emerging church is a broad phenomenon that has caught the attention of mainline Christianity. Emergent proper when a group of "successful" church planters began to chafe against the mega-church machine, churning out churches with praise bands, a charismatic up-front leader, and thousands gathered to consume religious services. They started to ask questions: Is bigger necessarily better? Why shouldn't people actively participate in worship and not just imbibe? What exactly is the church for? What is essential about the church? The emergent church has been described as a church or a movement, but its founders describe it as a conversation. These questions have led Emergents (as they're known) to believe that mega-churches, well-suited to the baby boomer generation, will fail to satisfy the deeper spiritual hunger of younger generations. They want to midwife into existence a new, emerging church that's traditional and rooted in the past, yet relevant and contemporary in outreach and approach. They are asking churches to focus on three ancient transcendentals often spoken of by philosophers as: goodness, beauty, and truth. Come and join the conversation as we explore this new way of being the church. Led by Kathy Glennan Mission Say Happy Mother's Day In A New Way: The Mission Committee is happy to offer two alternative giving opportunities for Mother's Day. First is the Safe Motherhood Kit, offered through IMA Worldhealth. It consists of basic sterile items and an outfit of newborn clothing to assist mothers giving birth in the bush. The other is the PCUSA's Networkers program, which provides insecticide-impregnated mosquito nets. What better way to honor your own mother, daughter, sister, or friend than to provide these life-saving items for mothers and children in Africa? See the table in fellowship hall after worship May 4 and 11. There are Grace Mission Fund envelopes in the pew racks. Contri-butions to this fund support mission projects locally, nationally, and internationally. Each year, interest income from the fund is distributed by the Mission Committee and the Session. Please give generously and support mission here at CPC Habitat for Humanity Why "Buy a Brick"? The cost of sponsoring a house for Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity is $100,000, and United Churches is sponsoring two houses this year. Right now, there are 15 churches belonging to this group, with each church asked to contribute $5,000 (or more) if they're able. If you do the math, you see this leaves us quite a bit short of $200,000! So, each church does whatever it can to raise additional funds. "Buy a Brick" is our way of helping raise these funds, and it's a great way for the entire congregation - even children! - to be a part of this project: Not everyone can work at the site, but everyone could proudly add a "brick" to our "wall" - for any amount. Every dollar helps! How wonderful it would be to fill our "wall" with "bricks," making someone's dream of a real home a reality. Thank you for your support! Coffee and Chocolate Sales: If you were a farmer and took good care of your crops, you would expect to earn a fair price for the sale of those crops. Unfortunately, farmers don't always get a good price for their crop. Some of these farmers now sell their crops to Equal Exchange from whom we buy our coffee and chocolate. Equal Exchange promises fair prices to the farmers. That is why we sell their coffee. We have bags of coffee and chocolate bars available for sale. The chocolate bars are not available in the summer because they melt and spoil. I would like to clear our inventory before summer so we can start fresh again in the fall. A Glimpse Into Our Past All the information in our retrospectives so far this year have been taken from a book by Mrs. Walter Knipp, History of the Catonsville Presbyterian Church: 1880-1955. This book will continue to be our source of information through August. One of the most pressing needs for our very active Women's Auxiliary in 1909 was for a larger kitchen, as noted in a letter they sent to the trustees saying, "We would be very glad to have your Board consider the enlargement of the church kitchen. It is now so small that it is almost impossible to cook anything in it. At our recent supper, for example, the croquettes had to be cooked in the kitchen of an adjoining house and carried over from time to time, which made a great deal of extra work." It is a long, slow road to recovery and there's a lot of 'drop off' in support from the non-profit sector; but, Presbyterians can be proud of the work they've done through mission efforts like Project Homecoming, a campaign to rebuild 900 homes in New Orleans, said Bob Schminkey, the Presbytery's Resource Person for Disaster Recovery. "Rebuilding the Gulf Coast has become a matter of faith," explained Bob. "We're not just hammering nails and putting up dry wall; we're building communities. And, in the process, folks from all over the country are rediscovering their faith and their sense of what it means to be a part of a congregation." Since Katrina struck in 2005, more than 31,000 Presbyterians nationwide have participated in the Gulf Coast recovery effort; however, there remains a backlog of unfinished building projects. Nearly three years after the hurricane, only 15 percent of New Orleans has been revitalized; tens of thousands of low-income, elderly and disabled people remain displaced; and, in nearby Gulf Port, Miss., scores of families still live in government funded trailers. Bob and other disaster officials expect recovery efforts to continue through the next decade. "The Gulf Coast has really become the cutting edge of mission work," Bob said. "Not everyone can go overseas for mission work but, almost, anybody can help on the Gulf Coast. Whether you are retired, in high school or somewhere in between, whatever your skill level - there's a place for you in mission on the Gulf Coast." The Presbytery of Baltimore will sponsor two mission trips to the Presbyterian Volunteer Villages on the Gulf Coast: Father & Son (14 & up) mission trips, June 8th -14th and June 15th - 21st; and, a Youth Week trip, June 22nd - July 27th for youth 16 and older. --- Thank you for your support! In 1917, a summer Bible School was started at CPC with the stipulation that "its work be confined to the use of Sunday School room and kitchen . . . ." In 1919, Miss Hope, Rev. Come and join us for the Chronicles of Narnia: PRINCE CASPIAN (rated PG) on Saturday, May 17th. This is the second installment of the fantasy series by Christian theologian C.S. Lewis. Many of us saw the first movie, "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe," and enjoyed it immensely. We'll meet at the Columbia Mall AMC theaters for the 6:45pm showing. It is advised that you purchase your tickets ahead of time. This is opening weekend so they may sell out quickly. Avoid disappointment: moviewatcher.com has them for sale. Also, leave plenty of time for parking -- this mall gets crowded! (Parking is more available over by Sears.) If there's interest, gathering for dinner at 5:30 pm at Panera's is a possibility. Please send a reply email if you'd like to join us. See you at the movies --- Dorothy -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... While a gathering hundreds of miles across the country may seem remote to your daily faith experience; it is, in fact, an important part of being a Presbyterian. General Assembly (GA) is the biennial meeting of the highest governing body in the Presbyterian Church (USA). The 218th General Assembly will take place at the San Jose Convention Bureau from June 21st -28th. A sort of Presbyterian "family reunion," the GA Meeting will draw together approximately 973 commissioners and advisory delegates (seven of which were elected by the Presbytery of Baltimore) for a week of deliberations, worship and decision-making about the mission and ministries of PC (USA). The commissioners and advisory delegates are each assigned to one of 17 committees which study overtures and make recommendation to the full body before a final vote. More than 100 overtures, including four offered by this Presbytery, will be considered. GA meetings are open to all of PC(USA)'s 10,960 churches; and, many church members will attend the meeting to observe the proceedings on behalf of their missions or congregations. Others wishing to follow the commissioners and advisory delegates in prayer may purchase the 2008 Presbyterian General Assembly Study Pack. As the Presbytery of Baltimore, its commissioners and advisory delegates, prepare for the 218th General Assembly meeting, we ask that your congregation please: . pray for the guidance of the commissioners to GA, that their decisions will be wise ones; . pray that the experience of commissioners and advisory delegates at GA will give them a new vision of the PC (USA) to take back to their congregations and presbyteries; and, . pray that the 5,000 people traveling to a new place have an easy and safe journey. Some of the people coming to GA are travelling from other countries, and this experience for them will be challenging. Presbytery of Baltimore's members elected to PC(USA) 218th General Assembly (top to bottom): Rev. Elizabeth McLean of Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church; Elder Mike Billings of Faith Presbyterian Church; Elder Adrienne Knight of Knox Presbyterian Church; Rev. Walt Peters of First Presbyterian Church of Westminster; Rev. Roger Powers of Light Street Presbyterian Church; Elder Bonnie Clarke of Ashland Presbyterian Church; and, Melissa Kardish, YAD, of First Presbyterian Church of Annapolis. While we waited for the two hour rehearsal to pass, I suggested that we might drive up and I would show him the church where I am preaching most Sundays now: Catonsville Presbyterian Church. We parked in the parking lot and started trying doors. Sure enough, after trying several we found an open one. We explored throughout the building: classrooms, gymnasium, fellowship hall, balconies, sanctuary while I tried to explain the improvements and updating that you the members are undertaking. He remarked several times how much he liked the "feel" of the church building and the imagined improvements. I was surprised by how much pride I felt in showing off your church, and how positive was the reaction by someone who had never seen Catonsville PC before. I would think these two anecdotal responses should give you all great hope about your investment in your congregation's future. Blessings, Terry P.S. I locked the door when we left! __________________________________ Things you need to know. For the week of May 18, 2008 Session has called a brief Congregational Meeting Sunday, May 18, 2008 immediately following worship The purpose of the meeting is to approve a resolution required by our lender for the capital renovation project. The lender, Presbyterian Investment and Loan Program (PILP) requires a congregation-approved resolution stating specifically the name of the lender and the limiting dollar amount of the loan. Since this information was not all known at the time of the April 6, 2008, congregational meeting, the minutes of that meeting do not suffice for this purpose, and another meeting is required. We will also elect at-large members for the Nominating Committee. Christian Education The rosebud on the Communion table is in honor of James Ian Fitzsimmons, born March 3, 2008, to Laura Parkhurst and Matthew Fitzsimmons. His grandparents are Maureen and Stephen Parkhurst. Youth Groups: Our end-of-the-year All Youth Group Family Potluck is tonight, 6-7:30 p.m. Main dish & drinks are provided. Child Care Schedule: Melissa Lambdin is seeking parents of young children and other persons who love children to be part of our Child Care Ministry. Responsible and caring people provide care in the Cribbery and Panda Rooms during worship. Volunteers may serve on a regular or occasional basis. Youth, middle school and older, who wish to serve as assistants are also welcome to volunteer on a once-per-month basis. Please contact Melissa at 410-747-5653. Know any graduates? We'd like to celebrate their achievements as a church family. Please send the names of students graduating from high school, college, or post-graduate institutions to the church office asap. Elder Susan Krehbiel offers the second of what we hope will be many offerings of thanksgiving submitted by our members: "When I think of Catonsville Presbyterian Church, I think of the many ways in which I am blessed by this congregation: d the sermons which provide me with new insight, a deeper understanding of scripture and call me to reflect on my life and where God is calling me; d the choir which surrounds me in voices raised in song, that allows me to share my love of music and welcomes me into a fellowship of prayer and support; d the mission opportunities to share God's love and compassion for others, reminding me that we are but stewards of God's creation; and d the leaders of this church who demonstrate their deep commitment and concern for the body of Christ in this time and place. Although I have been a member of CPC for less than two years, I have felt God's presence when we are gathered. I see God's spirit moving among us and calling us forward into something new. And, I am thankful that Norman and I are able to be a part of this faith community." Pictorial Directory Task Force Do you know how long it has been since Catonsville Presbyterian had its last pictorial directory? 1994! A lot has happened since then. For example, now so much is done by computers. What has not changed is what a useful tool the pictorial directory can be for all of us to get better acquainted and to preserve the history of our congregation. So while we are moving forward into a new era with our building, what better time to create a new pictorial directory? To that end, Session has approved the formation of a Pictorial Directory Task Force. Some of you have already expressed an interest in being involved. As time goes by, we will have a better idea of what we need to do, but at present it appears that we will need people to do publicity, to encourage participation, to take photographs of members who are homebound or otherwise unable to come in to have their pictures taken, to work on layout, and to do whatever is needed with respect to the computer. Please let me know if you would like to help. I'm sure it will be very rewarding. Sidney Turner: 410-788-8427 or vankoten at verizon.net. Funeral Service for Church Member A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held for Leola "Bunky" Gaither at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, May 19, at Sterling-Ashton- Schwab-Witzke Funeral Home on Edmondson Avenue in Catonsville. Visitation is today from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. A Glimpse Into Our Past All the information in our retrospectives so far this year have been taken from a book by Mrs. Walter Knipp, History of the Catonsville Presbyterian Church: 1880-1955. This book will continue to be our source of information through August. As early as May 1911, the first Boy Scout troop in the Baltimore area was started at CPC by Rev. Nesbitt, our second pastor. He maintained his enthusiasm for and interest in scouting until his death. The program grew to include younger boys, and in 1949, a Cub pack was formed for these boys. In October 1952, Explorer Post 306 for boys 14-18 was chartered. Chairs, Anyone? CPC has 25 wooden folding chairs with attached writing desks that are seeking a good home. Please leave a message for Bob Ashton at the church office if you would like to take them. They are free of charge. How many times have you heard that only to have a feeling of dread in the pit of your stomach? It was probably with good reason. Many times we are told not to worry by some shady character, to put our trust in someone else. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. But when Jesus tells the disciples to put their trust in God, he explains why the plan works every time. Don't worry about figuring it out now. We'll tackle it on Sunday in worship! Mission Thank You for Providing Meals: The Lazarus Caucus has issued a certificate of appreciation to Catonsville Presbyterian Church with sincere thanks for providing meals to the Westside Homeless Shelter during the 2007-2008 season of need. It cites 1 Corinthians 15:58, "Stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain." Teresa Donnelly, meals coordinator, says in an accompanying letter, "It cannot be stated more clearly than to say that without you hundreds and hundreds would have gone hungry this year. Thankfully, they were fed - body and soul - by you and your congregations." Further information on the Lazarus Caucus can be found at www.lazaruscaucus.org. Thank you all for your donations of money, time, food, and prayer for the Westside Shelter Meals mission. Ann Green and Susan Hutton There are Grace Mission Fund envelopes in the pew racks. Contributions to this fund support mission projects locally, nationally, and internationally. Each year, interest income from the fund is distributed by the Mission Committee and the Session. Please give generously and support mission here at CPC. Habitat for Humanity: Why "Buy a Brick"? Barbara Rice and the Mission Committee Outreach Be sure to join our email list if you would like to find out about special events, upcoming worship, educational opportunities, and announcements regarding members and friends of the church. Come stop by the table during Fellowship Hour where Phil Colston and I can help you. The Chancel Committee is looking for four willing people to help with readying the sanctuary, helping the acolytes, preparing communion, and putting the paraments away. If you're interested, please contact Laurie White. If you can only help out occasionally or are interested in one aspect of the job, that's fine, we are flexible. The more people we have helping out, the less of a commitment it is on everyone. Call Laurie at 410-747-0317 or catch her in fellowship hall. Although skyrocketing gas prices may keep some close to home; the staff of the Presbytery of Baltimore will hit the road this summer to share in the joys and concerns of Presbyterian congregations all over the state during its 2008 Summer Road Trip. Within the next few months, we will contact your church to arrange a visit with clergy, elders, staff and anyone else who?d like to join an hour-long gathering to discuss how the Presbytery can better serve your ministry and congregation. Prior to our arrival, we?ll send a church questionnaire and ask that you complete it so that we may review it together during the visit. We?d also like to introduce our new staff, chat about changes in our programs and celebrate your accomplishments since we last gathered two years ago. Yes, it?s been that long ? and, staff still reminisces about our first Road Trip in the winter of 2006. It was an invaluable experience and it provided us with tons of feedback that has since helped the Presbytery refine its vision and mission. As a result of those meetings, the Presbytery has provided church members with a variety of workshops ranging from mission partnership building, stewardship, personnel committee and elder & deacon training to computer technology and website development. It has revised policies like the protocol to address sexual misconduct; developed new supports for clergy; published a list of retreat centers; and, formed a viable link between the General Assembly and local Presbyterian churches. What staff also learned from the last Road Trip ? much to its chagrin ? is that it?s better to travel with the warmth of the summer sun at your back than to venture out into the dead of winter. So, we look forward to seeing you as we travel two-by-two from Maryland?s mountains, through its valleys and to its shores to visit for a spell with you and members of your congregation. Only 8 days remain until CPC serves another generous helping of sweet strawberry hospitality to the Catonsville community. Have you signed up to volunteer? The need is great. Please see if you can lend a hand in any of the areas listed below. We have plenty of openings available. Sign up sheets are located on the bulletin board in fellowship hall. We ask that volunteers be 12 years of age or older. Thank you! If you are artistic and like to play with glue and paint, this job is for you! FOOD PREPARATION Strawberry Slicers - Friday, June 6 10:30am - ???? Since we ran out of strawberries last year, we intend to order more flats to slice and sell for 2008. If you are retired or feel like taking the day off, come on down to Catonsville Presbyterian. Grab a chair and knife and get busy slicing. To preserve freshness and quality, strawberries are sliced only 24 hours before consumption, so it is especially helpful to have slicers available the day before the festival. Shortcake Bakers Our featured strawberry product requires more than just strawberries - it needs fluffy shortcakes to dress. We are looking for volunteers to bake 25-30 cakes to feed our hungry customers. Cakes should be delivered to the church on Friday, June 6 or Saturday morning, June 7. (1) That you remember that worship for the summer months is at 9:30 a.m., in the cool of the day, beginning this Sunday, June 1. Would you read Genesis chapters 6 through 9 in preparation for considering this passage? (3) That you mark your calendars for next Sunday's (June 8) long awaited GROUND BREAKING. It will be part of our 9:30 worship and you are asked to bring a shovel and a camera, children and grandchildren. I'll look forward to being with you on Sunday. In the KID ZONE, children will be able to bounce around in the popular Moon Bounce and take numerous turns on the Inflatable Slide. Others will design colorful crafts to take home or present as gifts to loved ones. Of course, the festival will be serving plenty of sweet strawberry desserts - strawberry shortcake, chocolate-dipped strawberries, strawberry smoothies - and cold beverages to keep customers cool and refreshed. In the festival mall area, visitors can browse through exhibits sponsored by small businesses and crafters. There's something for everyone. Where else would you want to be?!! Debbie Davis Please note: It takes lots of volunteers to fill all the different areas that day. If you can give an hour or more, please go into fellowship hall and sign up on the big bulletin board next to the kitchen. We need your help and you will have fun. That's a guarantee. Thank you for your help! Stewardship Give Before You Go: As next weekend's Strawberry Festival signals, summer with its schedule changes is here at Catonsville Presbyterian (worship at 9:30, reduced committee meetings, etc.) and many families often adjust their Sunday schedules to balance travel, vacation and summer camp. This note serves as a gentle reminder to - give before you go. Please remember CPC while you are away this summer. Catonsville Presbyterian Church continues to do God's work locally and in the world; it makes a difference in people's lives all year long, and your regular giving (pledged or unpledged) all year long supports that work. Regular church expenses (salaries and utilities, for examples) also continue regardless of season. As you move to your summer schedule, I hope this summer brings you a sense of peace and renewal, and I thank you in advance for your prayerful consideration as you remember to give before you go. One way to avoid falling behind with your pledged or unpledged giving, whether over the summer or in general, is to sign up for Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). This is done through Hubbard Press, which is affiliated with the PC (USA). At no charge to you, the amount of your monthly giving will automatically transfer from your account to the church's account as of the 20th of each month. Simply complete the Authorization Agreement insert, attach a voided check, and return it to the church office marked to the attention of the Stewardship Committee. Then you will have taken care of giving before you go for this summer and into the future! Peter Green, Chair, Stewardship Committee "Growing in God's Grace" Capital Campaign Number of Pledges Received to Date 155 Total Dollar Amount Pledged $ 968,216 Amount Received 05/25/2008 $ 17,222 Amount Paid to Date $ 651,322 The 2008 Per Capita is $30 per member. To date, we have received $2,832.24. What is Per Capita? It is an assessment paid to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) based on church membership. Per Capita is used for administrative expenses of the Presbytery of Baltimore, the Synod of the Mid-Atlantic, and the General Assembly. Giving Update Offering Needed Each Week $ 7,115 Received Last Week - 05/25/08 $ 7,392 2008 Needed to Date $ 149,415 Received to Date $143,021 This update keeps you informed of our current financial status. The needed amount is determined by the pledge commitments and estimated non-pledged offerings for 2008. We rely on everyone to support what God is doing through this congregation. The vitality of this ministry is secured by God's grace and funded by the faithfulness and commitment of God's people. We are counting on the ongoing generosity of our members and friends. Thank you! Bob Shumaker, Finance Committee Worship Dr. Kovacs is away on sabbatical and will be back in the office on Monday, August 18. During this time, the Rev. Dorothy Boulton will be acting head of staff, assuming all administrative responsibilities and coordinating pastoral care with Joan Berry, our commission lay pastor. Copies of recent sermons are available in the literature rack at the back of the sanctuary, on the Welcome Table in fellowship hall, and on the church's website. How would you like to help prepare God's house for worship on Sunday mornings? The Chancel Committee is looking for four willing people to help with readying the sanctuary, helping the acolytes, preparing communion, and putting the paraments away. If you're interested, please contact Laurie White. If you can only help out occasionally or are interested in one aspect of the job, that's fine, we are flexible. The more people we have helping out, the less of a commitment it is on everyone. Call Laurie at 410-747-0317 or catch her in fellowship hall. We're looking for a few good ushers to join the ranks. No special skills needed other than a big smile and a kind heart (which would be all of us). Ushers serve on a monthly basis only and are quite flexible with schedules. If you can only usher once, that's great - we can use you. Ushering is the front line of hospitality, and we are hoping to have as many people participate as possible. Contact either Nancy Henderson at 410-788-5414 or Laurie White at 410-747-0317 to be placed on a team. Thank you in advance for answering this call. Preaching Schedule June 8 Rev. On the one hand, God has called the world into being to be his faithful covenant partner. He has willed unity, harmony, and goodness..But on the other hand, it has not happened that way. It is a recalcitrant creation resistant to the purposes of the very one by whom and for whom the world exists."
