From dboulton at catonsvillepresb.org Tue Jun 3 10:54:03 2008 From: dboulton at catonsvillepresb.org (Dorothy Boulton) Date: Tue, 3 Jun 2008 11:54:03 -0400 Subject: [Members-and-Friends] Volunteers still needed for Strawberry Festival Message-ID: <002b01c8c592$0c866310$6401a8c0@Dorothy> Volunteers are still needed for CPC Strawberry Festival For the last 12 years Catonsville Presbyterian has been putting on a good show. Year after year we pull out the long tables and red canopies, setting them up on the corner of Beechwood Avenue and Frederick Road in anticipation of something big. We rent giant inflatable toy-like exhibits with the expectation that we'll see children playing and laughing together. We order strawberries, lots of strawberries. We wash and slice them, assuming they will be joyfully consumed in a variety of desserts. We take 6 months to plan and consider the fine details of orchestrating a large festival. We bear the responsibility of making prudent financial decisions, believing the festival will draw enough attendance to recover the investments made to host it in the first place. None of our expectations, assumptions, and hopes will hold meaning if we don't have the people to work the festival. What will happen when we shut down an exhibit for an hour or two because we don't have volunteers? What will we say when we turn away customers? It could really happen this year. Please don't let this be the case. Consider how an hour of your time could make the difference. Please contact Debbie Davis at ddavis1069 at yahoo.com or (410) 788-8160 if you can help. We'll accept last-minute volunteers on Saturday morning also. Just look for Vicki Haupt. Thank you! Shortcake - Please contact Carol Hughes at (410) 536-5740 if you can bake shortcake. Strawberry Slicers - (Friday, 10:30am to finish) Carol Hughes and Rosalind Haddaway are overseeing the slicing and storage of strawberries. They are looking for more slicers. White Elephant Table - Donations will be received at church on Friday from 12-7pm. Jackie Hopkins will be there Friday evening organizing and pricing items. Inflatable Slide 9:30-11: 2 adults, 11-12: 2 adults, 1-2: 2 adults We will close this exhibit if we don't get enough volunteers, sorry. We can't have children running around without adequate adult supervision. Crafts 9:30-11, 11-12, 12-1, 1-2: All hours need 3 volunteers. Shortcake Table 11-12, 12-1, 1-2: All hours need 1 volunteer. That devastation is right here with us in our hometown of Baltimore and surrounding communities. Amy Lang, Executive Director HopeSprings ? The urban rate of HIV/AIDS infection is comparable to many parts of Africa, as much as 14% in some zip codes. ? About 50% of all new HIV/AIDS infections occur in youth ages 15-24. ? HIV/AIDS is the leading cause of death for 35-44 year olds in Baltimore City. ? Due to widely accessible medications, people with HIV/AIDS are living longer; although, the stigma and fear of the virus continues to destroy lives and relationships. HopeSprings is an HIV/AIDS ministry founded last year by Central Presbyterian and Grace Fellowship churches to address the pandemic spread of HIV/AIDS in Baltimore and abroad in Malawi, Africa. When faced with the realities of HIV/AIDS - whether, locally or in the world beyond - members of these Towson area churches responded in ways that reached far beyond their suburban boundaries. HopeSprings' leadership believes it is called by God to raise awareness among the Body of Christ about HIV/AIDS; and, provide those who are called to this ministry with opportunities to serve others in need. As part of this effort, HopeSprings volunteers speak publicly about HIV/AIDS and host numerous opportunities for community and church groups to learn about the pandemic through events like the World Vision "Step into Africa" Experience. Joined in partnership with community health care providers, HopeSprings' caring volunteers are trained and equipped to provide critical support for people coping at all stages of the syndrome. The fledgling program claims more than 90 volunteers here and abroad. HopeSprings has faithfully sought God's will overseas in Malawi as well. Its teams of mission volunteers are in the midst of developing new partnerships with global health care providers that will enable them to apprentice with HIV/AIDS clinics serving the Malawi people. Through its efforts, the program aims to help destroy the stigma of HIV/AIDS and awaken people to the greatest humanitarian crisis of our time by empowering them to join the fight against the pandemic, both here and abroad. HopeSprings' faithful efforts to walk with God are paying off, said Executive Director, Amy Lang. "Wherever we go we enter as learners, seeking to humbly serve alongside those who have come before us, both locally and internationally. We enter with only the love and compassion of Jesus. Our hope is that you will enter with us as we embark on this Journey. Join us," the director beckoned, "as we walk with God to restore hope and healing to those impacted by HIV/AIDS in Baltimore and around the world." Inside this Issue Take Note/Act Now ? Below is a letter from JBC which will provide some basic information on the project. The sketch will be forwarded under separate email. Catonsville Presbyterian Church 1400 Frederick Rd Catonsville, Md Renovation Project Jeffrey Brown Contracting, LLC Information Meeting: 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 10, 2008 in the Sanctuary Jeffrey Brown Contracting (JBC) would like to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves to the Community, Congregation and Child Care Center Families of the Catonsville Presbyterian Church. We will act as the General Contractor for the upcoming Church Renovations. We are scheduled to begin mobilization on Monday June 9th. The project is scheduled to conclude in December of '08. JBC will use the Beechwood Avenue side of the church property for staging equipment and material as well as for entering the building. JBC will utilize the on-street public parking on Beechwood Avenue. At any one time we do not expect to have more than 10 vehicles parked on that side of the street during the hours of 6 am to 4 pm. The Staging area on Beechwood between the Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall will have gravel spread forming a construction-only driveway, along with a silt fence surrounding that area to contain any mud or runoff. A construction fence will be added to secure the area for purposes of public safety. This area will contain a spot-o-pot, dumpster & storage trailer. JBC will be responsible for cleaning the Beechwood entrance on a daily basis. See attached sketch of this area. BGE is contracted by the Church to upgrade the electrical power and will need to trench across Beechwood Avenue at some time during the project. At this time we do not have a date from BGE. We are told that the street would need to be temporarily closed for up to 3 hours during the trenching. When we have a definite date and time we will pass it on to the Church Building Committee, for forwarding to the neighborhood. Construction foot traffic will be entering the church building through the Beechwood Avenue tower entrance. That entrance will become inaccessible for several days when the concrete is poured. During that time we have been given permission to enter the Frederick Rd entrance on a controlled basis. Interior demolition will be contained to the tower and proposed stairwell. We will have partition walls as well as HEPA Filters in place. The air quality will be tested once the demolition is completed and also after the new stairwell is constructed to be sure it is contaminant-free before the partitions are removed. This area will be airtight during both of these phases. The utmost care and safety will be afforded the Church & Child Care Center during this phase of the project. (2) The exterior work should be completed by mid August. Noise, traffic, mud and debris will be minimized and closely monitored by JBC. At this time we do not anticipate any off-hour work, however as the need arises we may have to extend hours or work on weekends. If this is known in advance we will inform the Church. If you have any related construction issues throughout the project feel free to email us at renovatecpc at jbc.bz or call our office at 410-339-5733, ext 116. Please be assured that JBC has extensive experience working in occupied spaces, and the health and safety of the occupants and our workers is our highest priority. We will make every effort to assure that Church and Child Care Center activities can continue with the least possible disruption. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions the Church is inviting you to an open forum this Tuesday, June 10th at 7:30 pm in the Sanctuary. Representatives of the Church Building Committee and Jeffrey Brown Contracting will be there to answer your questions, helping you understand the scope of work and how it relates to the Congregation, Neighbors and Child Care Center. Thanks for your time. Sincerely, Tony Picciotto Project Manager Jeffrey Brown Contracting, LLC 6/3/08 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Please be sure to bring a camera and shovel (with your name labeled on it, to be left at the door with the ushers.) We want everyone to participate so we've made a few adaptations for the morning: - an abbreviated worship service will be inside from 9:30 until 10:15. Then we'll pick up our shovels at the door and head outside for the ground breaking. - we especially want children to be part of this moment so young children will have the option of going to child care from Life in the Community through the second hymn. We invite parents to pick up their children from child care and bring them outside --- with their shovels! -- for the ground breaking. Looking forward to celebrating this incredible day in the life of CPC. ---- See you on Sunday (and at the Strawberry Festival) Dorothy -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Dr. Terry Schoener Dear friends, I am looking forward eagerly to the ground breaking this Sunday as part of the 9:30 am worship service. Bring a shovel and a camera. Ground breakings are signs of hope and trust in the future. No less than Jeremiah purchasing a plot of land just as his people were being enslaved and shipped to Assyria, your shovels digging in to the sod express a confidence that God will carry your church forward propelling Christian values into the 21st and 22nd century. No less than those who gave you your church so long ago when Catonsville Presbyterian was just a vision, you are creating a legacy for children's children. You could have opted for no change (which really means a long quiet slide into non-being). You could have put your money into flat screens, comfort and clothes. But you didn't. You decided to lay a foundation for a Godly future. My hat is off to you (even if it reveals my bald dome). Blessings, Terry __________________________________ Things you need to know. Catonsville Presbyterian Church continues to do God's work locally and in the world; it makes a difference in people's lives all year long, and your regular giving (pledged or unpledged) all year long supports that work. Regular church expenses (salaries and utilities, for examples) also continue regardless of season. As you move to your summer schedule, I hope this summer brings you a sense of peace and renewal, and I thank you in advance for your prayerful consideration as you remember to give before you go. What's EFT? One way to avoid falling behind with your pledged or unpledged giving, whether over the summer or in general, is to sign up for Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). This is done through Hubbard Press, which is affiliated with the PC (USA). At no charge to you, the amount of your monthly giving will automatically transfer from your account to the church's account as of the 20th of each month. Simply complete the Authorization Agreement insert, attach a voided check, and return it to the church office marked to the attention of the Stewardship Committee. Then you will have taken care of giving before you go for this summer and into the future! The needed amount is determined by the pledge commitments and estimated non-pledged offerings for 2008. We rely on everyone to support what God is doing through this congregation. The vitality of this ministry is secured by God's grace and funded by the faithfulness and commitment of God's people. We are counting on the ongoing generosity of our members and friends. Thank you! Bob Shumaker, Finance Committee Worship Dr. Kovacs is away on sabbatical and will be back in the office on Monday, August 18. During this time, the Rev. Dorothy Boulton will be acting head of staff, assuming all administrative responsibilities and coordinating pastoral care with Joan Berry, our commission lay pastor. Copies of recent sermons are available in the literature rack at the back of the sanctuary, on the Welcome Table in fellowship hall, and on the church's website. How would you like to help prepare God's house for worship on Sunday mornings? The Chancel Committee is looking for four willing people to help with readying the sanctuary, helping the acolytes, preparing communion, and putting the paraments away. If you're interested, please contact Laurie White. If you can only help out occasionally or are interested in one aspect of the job, that's fine, we are flexible. The more people we have helping out, the less of a commitment it is on everyone. Call Laurie at 410-747-0317 or catch her in fellowship hall. We're looking for a few good ushers to join the ranks. No special skills needed other than a big smile and a kind heart (which would be all of us). Ushers serve on a monthly basis only and are quite flexible with schedules. If you can only usher once, that's great - we can use you. Ushering is the front line of hospitality, and we are hoping to have as many people participate as possible. Contact either Nancy Henderson at 410-788-5414 or Laurie White at 410-747-0317 to be placed on a team. Thank you in advance for answering this call. Preaching Schedule June 15 Rev. A Glimpse Into Our Past In 1920 when plans were made for our new church to be built at its present location, Rev. Nesbitt described a church in these words, "A New Church: A Spiritual Creation. It is going on all around us. People are meeting the Living God in life changing ways. Once in a while, they show up at church. Once in a while that encounter happens in church. And then, quite a bit of the time, it happens elsewhere. One out of every three people will report having a supernatural experience. In recent polls and surveys, about 85 percent of all Americans say they believe in Jesus Christ. Yet, less than half of them attend church at all. How can the church engage and attract the people all around us who believe in Jesus, who have met God, but who have no use for church? Dr. Chuck Denison not only designed and developed a church that grew from 12 to 500 in worship; he went on to direct the new church development for the Presbyterian Church USA for several years. Author, adjunct professor and pastor, Chuck Denison will lead a discussion on these important possibilities. You are invited to join the conversation on Saturday, July 19th at New Imani Community Church in Owings Mills, from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm, for the Presbytery of Baltimore's Worship and Evangelism Training Event with Dr. Chuck Denison and Minister Warren Cooper. They will lead us in two workshops: Worship as Evangelism and Beyond Boiler Repair: The Church Engaging Our Cultures, respectively. The event also will feature a Saturday evening concert, The Sacred Sound of Jazz, show casing jazz vocalist and recording artist Warren Cooper with special guest, jazz guitarist, Chuck Denison. This event is for pastors, elders, worship leaders, worship and evangelism committee members. The cost is $15 per individual and $50 per church per five registrants. Lunch is included. Participants are also invited to attend an 11am worship service led by workshop leaders on the following Sunday. Dr. Terry Schoener Dear Friends, I imagine you have watched several times, as I have, the video clip on the news of two cars striking a 79 year old man in Hartford, Connecticut, then speeding away. But the hit-and-run response of those two drivers wasn't the only appalling response: by-standers didn't rush to the victim's aid either; other cars drove around the body lying in the street; there seemed to be no human response to the need of another human being. What's going on? Is this the result we get when we expose children and adults to tens of thousands of acts of violence on TV and the movies? Have we had to build up calluses on our hearts and become insensitive to hurt? Do we have "compassion fatigue?" Are we in danger of turning away from the world and into our selves? Has our religion become privatized so it no longer engages the world? How do you explain events like this to your children and grandchildren? In Luke 10:29-37 Jesus tells a similar story: A man going down the lonely road from Jerusalem to Jericho and was fallen on by thieves who beat him terribly, robbed him and left him for dead. Like in Hartford, two individuals came upon him and keep going. Then one who was the least likely to come to the man's aid did stop and cared for the victim. He who was the least like the beaten man - different place of residence, different background, different religion - was the neighbor. Cultivate the practice of being a "good Samaritan, and teach it to your children. It appears to be disappearing among our people - a troubling prospect! Blessings, Terry __________________________________ Things you need to know. Thank you! Bob Shumaker, Finance Committee Give Before You Go: Please remember CPC while you are away this summer. Per Capita is used for administrative expenses of the Presbytery of Baltimore, the Synod of the Mid-Atlantic, and the General Assembly. Worship Dr. Kovacs is away on sabbatical and will be back in the office on Monday, August 18. During this time, the Rev. Dorothy Boulton will be acting head of staff, assuming all administrative responsibilities and coordinating pastoral care with Joan Berry, our commissioned lay pastor. Preaching Schedule June 22 Rev. Nesbitt, who served as an Army chaplain during WWI, brought home a shovel he picked up on a battlefield in France. We still have this shovel. It was used in breaking the ground for our new church (present location) on April 24, 1921, on a "brilliantly clear and pleasantly cool afternoon." The ceremony started with the hymn "How Firm a Foundation" and, after scripture readings and congratulatory messages from visiting ministers, ended with the hymn "All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name" and the benediction. GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (USA) Our biennial national assembly convenes in San Jose this week, running from June 21 through 28. A highlight is the election of the moderator which will be broadcast on streaming video on the pcusa.org website on Saturday, June 21, from 7-9:30 p. m. California time and 10p.m. - 12:30 a.m. Eastern time. Please feel welcome to check in on the website during the week to find out the latest news. A few of the top issues at this year's assembly are: A Revised Form of Government: proposing a polity that would be more flexible and appropriate for a missional Reformed church in the 21st century; The Belhar Confession: taking the first step to adding this confession to the Book of Confessions. This grew out of the experience of Christians in South Africa and is a call to Christian unity and racial reconciliation. Middle East Concerns: a variety of proposals to strengthen our witness to peace with justice in relation to both Israel/Palestine and Iraq. At no charge to you, this will automatically transfer the amount of your monthly giving from your account to the church's account, as of the 20th of each month. Simply complete the form contained in this bulletin, attach a voided check, and return it to the church office marked to the attention of the Stewardship Committee. Questions? A Glimpse Into Our Past Imagine yourself (back in 1921) attending a Christmas service at 6:30 a.m. in what is now our church library. There is a cheery log fire blazing in the fireplace. This is much needed because the building isn't finished, the heating system isn't working yet, and not all the doors and windows are in. According to a contemporary report, "The room was well filled and hearts were lifted high in praise and adoration. No one who was there will ever forget the experience." GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (USA) Our biennial national assembly convenes in San Jose this week, running from June 21 through 28. A Church for Future Generations: focusing on the church's ministry to and with youth. The 2nd Annual Catonsville Presbyterian Women Retreat All women of the church are welcome!! Please note that you can enter the sanctuary through the Beechwood Avenue entrance, through the 1400 Frederick Road entrance, through the Child Care Center entrance, and by the lift. The latter three entrances will require entering the sanctuary through the door from the Bell Choir loft. This entrance is wheelchair & handicapped accessible. Please also note that entrances to and from fellowship hall will require passage through the kitchen since the hallway doors are blocked off. If you wish, you may see a sketch of the area which will forwarded under a separate email. We look forward to seeing you on Sunday, and we appreciate your patience and good will as we make these important changes to our church facility. Message-ID: <015a01c8d56d$14d9aaa0$6401a8c0@Dorothy> December 14, 2007 ----- Original Message ----- From: Presbytery of Baltimore To: Presbytery of Baltimore Sent: Monday, June 23, 2008 3:22 PM Subject: TidingsJune 23,2008 "Finally, It's Summer!" June 23, 2008 In June the Vision Committee completed a round of consultations with Presbytery committees to explore how the committees where aligned with the goals of the Presbytery. Now, the Vision Committee is turning its attention to discerning the future to which God is calling the Presbytery and how to involve the whole Presbytery in that discernment. As a part of these conversations, we have agreed to read three books: The Starfish and the Spider by Ori Brafman and Rod Beck-strom; Transforming Church: Bringing out the Good to Get to Great by Ford and Graham; and, Governance as Leadership by Chait, Ryan and Taylor. We've already read the first book that explores the growing phenomena of "leaderless" organizations such as Craig's List, AA and Wikipedia. In Transforming Churches, author Kevin Ford explores how congregations must adapt and change to become healthy. He further asks in the book: "Are members of your church experiencing authentic life change? Does your church have a clear sense of mission and a compelling vision for the future? Does your church embrace change? Is your church effective in transforming your local community?" The final selection, Governance as Leadership explores how non-profit boards can provide real leadership. You are invited to read these books along with us - to put them on your summer reading list. And if you would be interested in leading a book study - let me know. -Peter Nord remember summers as a kid. School was out, breakfast was later and my days consisted of mowing the lawn, finding a cool place to swim and finding a pick-up game of baseball. I don't recall many organized summer activities; although, some of the other kids went off to camp for a week or two. For most of us, it was a lazy, hazy time. Childhood is rarely like that anymore. There are all sorts of summer camps for kids and most of us have already planned, far into the summer vacation season, family activities such as travelling, boating or basking on the beach. It seems like the pace of life is so much greater than it was when I was kid; that is, at least, in most other places - except, for the church. It is in the summer that the pace of life in our churches slows markedly. Session meetings are suspended, ministers go on vacation, church school and youth groups do not meet. One of the questions in most ministers' minds is whether to fight this trend or go with the flow. I have done both. I've organized monthly celebrations (bring in your wedding pictures to share during the coffee hour), sponsored "simple Sunday brunches", and invited local leaders to be recognized during worship. At other times I have (somewhat unsuccessfully) allowed myself to simply enjoy the graciousness of summer and God's creation. But those of us who serve as ministers know that there is more going on than meets the eyes. Many of us use the summer to plan worship for the following year, decide on church school curriculum and recruit teachers, organize Vacation Church School, start up the Stewardship Campaign and prepare for all that will be occurring once Labor Day marks the end of summer. Regardless of how you approach summer, I pray that you will find it a blessing. Inside this Issue Take Note/Act Now ? Worship and Evangelism Training ? Clergy Retreat ? Dr. Terry Schoener Dear Friends: Nick the Greek said, "Remember this: the house doesn't beat the player. It just gives him the opportunity to beat himself!" Year in and year out the gambling industry spends millions to get a foot-hold in Maryland with slot machines. Never mind that this state was once over-run with corruption through the presence of slot machines until the citizenry rose up and banished slot machines from this state's life. Or, at least they thought they had banished it. But the gambling industry has very deep pockets and every year spreads around large sums to re-instate gambling in Maryland. This Fall there will be an initiative on the ballot to actually change the historic constitution of this state in order to permit gambling. The gambling lobby will spend a great deal of time and cash to try to convince you to vote to change the constitution. Every year the meager forces of the churches of Maryland, on a shoe-string budget, try to hold back the rush to raise money for our states programs through gambling. On what basis do Christians argue against slot machines? That is what I'd like to lay before you this Sunday: What are the biblical motifs and fundamental theologies that underlie Christianity's consistent opposition to gambling over the centuries? You may well not agree, but I would be grateful for the opportunity to place it before you for your consideration. So, I hope to see you Sunday. Blessings, Terry __________________________________ Things you need to know. Bob Shumaker, Finance Committee Today is Stewardship Catch-up Sunday: CPC depends on regular giving to meet its commitments and its budget. If you are up to date with your pledged or unpledged giving, thank you. If not, please bring your giving up to date today. Our financial gifts and pledges are tangible signs of our faith and our commitment to God's work in this church. One way to avoid falling behind with your pledged or unpledged giving is to sign up for Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). This is done through Hubbard Press, which is affiliated with the PC (USA). At no charge to you, this will automatically transfer the amount of your monthly giving from your account to the church's account, as of the 20th of each month. Simply complete the form contained in this bulletin, attach a voided check, and return it to the church office marked to the attention of the Stewardship Committee. Questions? See the enclosed explanation of "What is EFT"? Peter Green, Chair, Stewardship Committee Worship Dr. Kovacs is away on sabbatical and will be back in the office on Monday, August 18. During this time, the Rev. Dorothy Boulton will be acting head of staff, assuming all administrative responsibilities and coordinating pastoral care with Joan Berry, our commissioned lay pastor. BACKPACKS FOR SUCCESS 2008 The Board of Deacons is kicking off our Backpacks for Success school supply drive in association with Catonsville Emergency Assistance Network (CEAN). The list of supplies children are required to bring to school is extensive and overwhelming for those families who are already struggling to put food on their tables each week. Donations from the lists below will help those less fortunate children in our surrounding communities get off on a positive step as they start their new school year. If you would like to sponsor a child and supply the whole list (primary, middle, or high), then let me know. It could also be fun for individuals to team up to sponsor a child. Please enter the building at the 1400 Frederick Road door when dropping off items during the renovation. Items will be collected in designated boxes in fellowship hall until Thursday, August 6. Unable to shop? If you or someone you know would like to make a monetary donation, please make checks payable to CPC, and in the memo write School Supply Drive. You may drop these in the collection plate or mail them to CPC with Attention: School Supply Drive on your envelope. Each child needs the following items: Middle School Supply List - We are sponsoring 2 children. The cost of sponsoring a house for Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity is $100,000, and United Churches is sponsoring two houses this year. There are 15 churches belonging to this group, with each church asked to contribute $5,000 (or more) if they're able. If you do the math, you see this leaves us quite a bit short of $200,000! So, each church does whatever it can to raise additional funds. "Buy a Brick" is our way of helping raise these funds, and it's a great way for the entire congregation - even children! - to be a part of this project: Not everyone can work at the site, but everyone could proudly add a "brick" to our "wall" - for any amount. Every dollar helps! How wonderful it would be to fill our "wall" with "bricks," making someone's dream of a real home a reality. Thank you for your support! Barbara Rice and the Mission Committee Second Annual Catonsville Presbyterian Women's Retreat Retreat Leader, Rev. Margee Iddings "What Jesus Teaches Us About Giving and Receiving Gifts" All women of the church are welcome to join us at the Meadowkirk Retreat Center in Middleburg, Virginia - same location as last year. The carpool will depart from CPC at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 27. We will return on Sunday, September 28, departing Meadowkirk at noon and arriving at CPC by 2 p.m. The cost is $126 per person for three meals, overnight lodging, and program. Please RSVP to Tracy Lantz: Lantz.tracy at epa.gov, 410-455-9982 or Jackie Kramer: Jackie3esq at yahoo.com, 410-988-5858. RSVP with payment by August 25, 2008. SEE YOU THERE! A Glimpse Into Our Past So far this year, the information for our "Glimpses" has been taken from a book, History of the Catonsville Presbyterian Church 1880-1955, by Mrs. Walter Knipp. Mrs. Knipp was a very active member of CPC and the first woman elder in the Baltimore Presbytery (ordained in 1931). This book will continue to be our source of information through August. Looking back: Our church building on Frederick Road and Beechwood Avenue was completed in 1922. A service had been set for January 29. However, there was a record-breaking blizzard that weekend, and the first service in the new church building was held the following Sunday, February 5. Note: the sanctuary was not begun until 1927. Help Needed Church member Adair Wolfe is in need of someone to pick up her son from Mt. St. Joe High School at 10:15 a.m. and take him home (Elkridge). He is attending Mt. St. Joe five days a week through July 25. If one person can't commit to five days a week, perhaps several people could split the days. Your assistance will be greatly appreciated, and you will receive compensation. Please call Adair at 240-373-9273. Temporary Housing Students from several European countries are in need of housing. They will be working in the United States as foreign exchange students during their summer break. If you would like to help them experience the U.S. by providing them with a positive housing environment, please contact Gallina Teresh at 410-744-0937 or 410-302-2782. There is a potential for these students to pay a small fee for their lodging because of their employment. I laid down the largest stake allowed - four thousand gulden - and lost it. Then, getting hot, I pulled out all I had left, staked it on the same number, and lost again, after which I walked away from the table as though I were stunned. I could not even grasp what had happened to me." Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Gambler -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
