God is doing good things in the PC(USA). The new Moderator and Stated Clerk of GA are energetic and eager to help this Church we love move out of the norms of the past forty years and transform it to meet the challenges of the future. The senior leadership of the GA Council is also working to refashion an understanding of the Church, including an appreciation for evangelism beyond theological labels. While at GA I heard amazing stories of other presbyteries transforming themselves and their churches into healthy and vibrant expressions of the love of Christ. San Diego has become a missional presbytery; forty percent of the Charlotte Presbytery is participating in church transformation; and a number of other presbyteries are working with consultants like Paul Borden, Stan Ott and Brian McLaren to recapture the mission of Jesus Christ and grow new disciples. Meanwhile, presbytery executives are increasingly emerging from the ranks of pastors and seem to, intuitively, know what their congregations need. Recognizing the Church's need for more time, GA delayed action on adopting a new Form of Government. The proceedings resulted in other significant accomplishments, though. The PC(USA) deepened its relationships with the KPCA, Moravian, Roman Catholic and Episcopal churches; approved a strategy for church growth among African American congregations; and, declared a commitment to "Grow the Church Deep and Wide." It also approved a paper that explored ways churches can respond to homelessness. Undoubtedly, most of the GA buzz will revolve around ordination issues. At this time G 6-0106b remains intact and GA continues to support the historic position that the national church sets the standards for ordination (although, the ordaining body is called to use its judgment in applying these norms). Discussion surrounding ordination and marriage are both troubling and welcomed by Presbytery members. Still, I look forward to hearing your reaction to the GA's decision on these matters. As I participate in this discussion in our own Presbytery, I invite others to join me at the Table of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. For, it is Christ's table - and, not that of any one denomination or church - at which we gather. I pray that you will feel this is so. A Glimpse Into Our Past So far this year, the information for our "Glimpses" has been taken from a book, History of the Catonsville Presbyterian Church 1880-1955, by Mrs. Walter Knipp. Mrs. Knipp was a very active member of CPC and the first woman elder in the Baltimore Presbytery (ordained in 1931). This book will continue to be our source of information through August. In 1925, our congregation wanted the money that had been raised for foreign missions to be sent to an area that some of our members had visited or where they had friends. It was decided that CPC should send a young missionary, Dr. William Clark, to Nanking, China. There he almost lost his life in an anti-foreign uprising, escaping in a U.S. gunboat to Japan. Later, after returning to China, he and his wife were devoted missionaries for years. Help Needed Church member Adair Wolfe is in need of someone to pick up her son from Mt. The Presbytery is planning a church site in New Market where a community is slated for development in five years. In 2000, the Presbytery helped establish St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Mt. Airy. The church received a charter in January 2007 and its 1? year old congregation has already completed its first capital campaign. The113 member congregation - which now holds Sunday Service at the American Legion Hall -pledged $454,540 toward a new church building. Celebrating its second year under the care of Rev. Ron Johnson, New Imani Community Church sold its building and in January began worshipping at #12 Gwynns Mill Court, a refurbished facility in an Owings Mills business park. The congregation re-launched its ministry on Palm Sunday with 129 people and continues to cultivate new members through events it sponsors in the Owings Mills area. Next Generation Project in Baltimore City serves the needs of a burgeoning, young adult population. This new ministry focuses on helping small groups of 20-to-30 year olds explore their faith through spirituality, relationships and hands-on efforts. Next Generation's ministry leaders, Tim and Saranell Hartman embody incredible passion and recently re-located to the Patterson Park area to seek greater opportunities for the ministry's work. Existing congregations are doing well, too: worshipping in creative ways, caring for each other and moving forward to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. Although long-established, many of these congregations continue to learn innovative and exciting ways of worshipping together from our New Church Development congregations. By now, most have received notice of the New Churches for a New Day campaign. Funds from the campaign will help the Presbytery continue its support of New Church developments - which are important in our mission as Christians to seek inclusivity and welcome and support individuals and churches from a broad diversity of theological perspectives. The New Church Development committee would be please to come to your church and tell our story. We ask for your continued prayers as ministries develop and spread Christ's word throughout the greater community. Bill Millen Inside this Issue Take Note/Act Now ? Worship and Evangelism Training ? Mt 13:24 _______________________________________ Text: Psalm 139; Matthew 13:24-30 Message: Obsessing Over Weeds; Celebrating Over Wheat Preacher: Rev. Dr. Terry Schoener Dear Friends: This Sunday will be my last time to preach at Catonsville Presbyterian Church before Rev. Kovacs returns from his sabbatical. Brenda and I want to thank you all for the warm reception you have given us on those Sundays we have been with you. I feel special appreciation of your Associate Pastor, Dorothy Boulton, who communicates the joy of the Christian life in everything she does. I think this church is in a good place, poised for a great leap forward into the future God is preparing. You are blessed with the synergy of pastors and staff, program and missions, renewing facilities, and of course you yourselves, the congregation, who I sense love Christ and want to be his persons in this world. We hope to return to be with you when your renovations are dedicated. This Sunday I hope to be able to say goodbye to many of you personally, and to share with you a sermon on the imponderable puzzle of how it is that God's good creation is infected by evils. Hmmmm! Read the lection Matthew 13:24-30. Blessings, Terry __________________________________ Things you need to know. Donations from the lists below will help those less fortunate children in our surrounding communities get off on a positive step as they start their new school year. If you would like to sponsor a child and supply the whole list (primary, middle, or high), then let me know. It could also be fun for individuals to team up to sponsor a child. Please enter the building at the 1400 Frederick Road door when dropping off items during the renovation. Items will be collected in designated boxes in fellowship hall until Thursday, August 6. Unable to shop? If you or someone you know would like to make a monetary donation, please make checks payable to CPC, and in the memo write School Supply Drive. And while you're there, consider adding your name to a brick with a contribution! As an added bonus, all contributors (present and past) are welcome to take home an actual brick that was "demo"ed from a Habitat house . . . and turned into a work of art by our own CPC youth! They make a great doorstop, paperweight, conversation piece, or a meaningful gift to someone you know who supports the work of Habitat for Humanity. As always, thank you for your support . . . and now, let's fill up that "brick wall"! Barbara Rice, for the Mission Committee Outreach Fellowship Hour hosting opportunities still available: They're going fast, but we still have some Sundays open in August. On Sunday, March 29, 1931 - the last worship service of the anniversary - the blue and ivory hymn boards in the sanctuary were unveiled and are still in use today. They were given in memory of Mr. Walter Knipp by his wife and son. The inscription on one board says "A faithful servant of the Lord Jesus Christ" and the other says "Elder, teacher and friend in this church." Of Mr. Knipp, Dr. Nesbitt wrote in his diary on June 20, 1930, "My dearest friend died today." You're Invited!
