Dealing with a Blue Christmas
George B. Antonakas, Associate Pastor
Central Presbyterian Church
This season of joy and celebration is often an especially difficult time for
people who are grieving or feeling a deep loss in their lives. Studies
reveal that it can take as much as two years to fully work through the grief
of a major loss and even after that period of time those who have been
through it can attest to remaining scars. We are prone to forget that the
events subsequent to the announcement of Jesus? birth were filled with a
great deal of stress and discomfort.
Because grief doesn?t take a break at Christmas, this time of year can be
difficult for some. One way to mitigate that pain is to gather with other
suffering sojourners, to look upward to God for help and be surrounded by
the comfort of the Holy Spirit and those who understand. Even if you do not
personally feel the need for solace, this may be an excellent opportunity to
comfort a friend or family member who does.
It is our hope that when Christmas dawns and in the days following that
every grieving, burdened heart will have been gently lightened by the grace
of God. It is this very hope that caused the Lord to enter into our human
suffering and take it upon himself. And there may be no better way to truly
understand the real meaning of Christmas.
Wondering How to Help Someone Through a Blue Holiday Season?
Be available and supportive. Ask how you can help; there may be tangible
ways to do so. For those who have experienced loss ? whether it?s a job, a
home or the absence of a loved one ? it?s, most often, helpful just to be
with people who will love them, listen to them and remind them of God?s love
for them. In his book Letters for Lizzie, Jimmy O?Donnell writes, ?I also
wrestle with those faithful souls who are quick to speak for God, who
purport to know God?s will. These souls speak always, I know, to bless,
never to harm
But I?ve learned to be careful about saying such things to
people who are in the midst of deep suffering.
People struggling at such moments are especially fragile; and, if they?re
honest, their faith is fragile, too. Those with pat answers can, without
meaning to, seem callous, presenting an image of a God who doesn?t seem to
listen to their pleadings or isn?t able to help them. God doesn?t need
people to defend His honor or interpret His mysteries when the bereaved
rage. Better it may be for most of us to say nothing at such times. Just sit
with the afflicted or the grieving. Be their friend, not necessarily the one
to provide answers to questions that have stumped the brightest minds for
centuries. Just be there to listen.?

Message: Getting Out of God?s Way
In a sorrowful and hopeless situation, a new word breaks-in through the
voice of the prophet; a new and unexpected voice announces a new and
unexpected act of Yahweh. Israel heard a new word. Those in exile will be released.
A new exodus is coming. Actually, it has already started. Yahweh is on the
move and will bring his people home. In order for the divine command to be
fulfilled ? comfort to God?s people ? they have to prepare a way out of
Babylon, a way out and a way through. A new road has to be built to convey the
presence of Yahweh. The old highways cannot transport God?s people home, they
cannot provide the way, they are inadequate and cannot convey the good news
Yahweh brings, so a new road has to be cut. This is the work of Advent --
preparing the way for God to move.
Grace and peace,
Ken

All youth groups and families are invited to our annual Christmas Caroling
event on Saturday, December 13. Crossroads will head over to a gathering at
the Fromms immediately afterwards, approx 5:15 ?7:00 p.m., 111 Arbutus Avenue.
Our annual Gift Collection for the McKim Community Center runs through
December 14. Please help us provide gifts for children and teens in this
100-year-old East Baltimore ministry. New, unwrapped gifts can be placed in the bins
in fellowship hall. Neat gift ideas: How about a basketball or a board game? It
?s probably going to be a tough Christmas for many of our neighbors; let?s
help make the season bright.

Looking for Stewardship activity books & pledge cards? They can be found
there as well.
Christmas Eve, December 24, 4 p.m. Family Worship Service.
1. Youth musician opportunities: There are two excellent ways to provide
music this year. First, if you already play an instrument, we hope you?ll sign
up for a solo or duet (piano accompaniment available, if you need it);
second, we?re forming a tone chime bell choir to present a Christmas piece during
worship (led by Dr. Greg Knauf). No prior experience needed. We?ll be
rehearsing for that during the church school hour on Sunday, December 21, and at 3
p.m. on December 24. Please let Dorothy Boulton know of your interest in
either opportunity by December 14.
2. Youth narrators & liturgists are also needed. Do you have a clear,
friendly speaking voice? Are you comfortable speaking in front of a crowd?
Interested in communicating the Good News of God?s amazing love? We need your
skills! Please see Dorothy by December 14.
3. Our ?Do-it-yourself Nativity? has become so popular we?re going to do
it again. Please encourage your child to dress as one of the characters in
the Bible story, ex: Mary, Joseph, angels, sheep, cows . . . . Extra costumes
will be available in the sanctuary. A few volunteers are needed to help fit
and fold costumes. Please see Dorothy Boulton if you?d like to assist.
Second Sunday Children?s Worship ministry meets next Sunday, December 14,
as part of our regular worship service. Kindergarten ? second grade will meet
from approx. 10:50 through the closing hymn. Led by Ellen Fromm and Andrew
Glennan. (Child care is available for infants ? age 5 in the Cribbery & Panda
Rooms.)
Children?s Choir: The children will be singing in worship on Sunday,
December 14. Each Sunday during church school, 3-4 year olds ? fifth graders have
been practicing with Mr. Bob. Come and hear how we are getting ready for baby
Jesus! The children will also be singing during the 4 p.m. Family Worship
Service on Christmas Eve.
Meet the Author: Local author, Ellen Nibali, The Secret of St. Nicholas,
Fairland Books, will be visiting the Child Care Center on Monday, December 15,
at 5 p.m. She will sign copies of her book, which will also be available for
purchase.
Adult Education: Sundays at 9 a.m. in the library. Child care is available.
Sing a Song of Bethlehem: The Incarnation through the Music of the Church
December 7: We will look at the connection between religious experience
and the imaginative arts -- how the Christmas story itself serves as the spark
for so much creativity. Greg Knauf will share what it was like to compose
his anthem, "Gloria," which was included in the St. Olaf Choir Christmas concert
in 2007. Led by Ken Kovacs.
December 14: We will see how the carols and hymns of the season have
actually distorted our hearing of the Christmas story. Bring a CD recording of your
most meaningful Christmas piece to share with the group. Led by Ken Kovacs.
December 21: The focus will be on the angels? song in Luke 2, specifically
the Gloria and the many musical renderings of this experience. Led by Ken
Kovacs.

BUILD: Championing Summer Youth Work Programs
By Andrew Foster Connors,
Brown Memorial Park Avenue Presbyterian Church
We all know these are difficult times for everyone. Many parishioners are
experiencing serious challenges ? the loss of a home, a car, a job, or
dreams for retirement. Cuts in local and state budgets also force our
government to make difficult choices. What do we value as sacred; and, what
is important but not essential in lean economic times? For several years,
the BUILD organization (Baltimoreans United in Leadership Development) has
lifted up children as our most cherished investment.
In a show of support for the children of Baltimore City, our Presbytery
pledged significant funding for the Youth Works summer employment program.
The Presbytery?s commitment, combined with other gifts garnered by BUILD,
resulted in 1500 additional summer employment opportunities for youth this
year. While urban cities all around the country were marking a decline in
youth programs; in Baltimore, the Presbyterian Church and other community
groups vowed to keep our youth productive and gainfully employed during the
long summer months.
Now, confronted with the economic impact of a recession, we anxiously wait
to see how cutbacks in government funding will impact BUILD?s summer youth
employment program next year. Hope for renewed funding is dwindling, even
in the wake of a promise from President-Elect Barack Obama for an infusion
of federal money for infrastructure projects designed to create jobs. And,
still ? religious leaders among us remain largely silent while decisions are
made on where local government should invest our tax dollars.
BUILD will break that silence at 7pm on Wednesday, December 10th at St.
Matthew?s Roman Catholic Church (across from the Presbytery office at 5400
Loch Raven Blvd.) Over 1,000 people are expected to gather as we call upon
our local government to hold children harmless from the economic crises. We
invite you to stand with us as we pledge to do whatever it takes to protect
our children. We?re also calling upon each other to keep commitments that
have been made to our young people to put their safety, their education, and
their future as our highest priorities.
There are few things that I wouldn?t do to give my children the love, the
safety, and the opportunity they deserve. Children in our city and state
should be no different. Together we can shape a future for our children.

Giving Back the Song:
A Service of Music for Advent & Christmas
Join us for worship this Sunday in a service full of music. We will "give
back the song" of praise to God for the birth of Jesus Christ. In addition
to carols of the season, including "At Solemn Midnight Came a Call," the
choir will be offering a selection of pieces to help interpret the meaning
of the season. The choir and organ will be joined by a brass quintet.
Come and add your voices to our songs of praise!
Grace and peace,
Ken

Worship
On Wednesday, December 17, we will have an Advent Service of Wholeness and
Healing at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. We will provide a place to bring our
sorrow and sadness, our hurt and our pain, our grief and loss, our desire
for wholeness and healing, either for ourselves or for those we love and
care about. We will gather in the dark for prayer, music, and silence. If
you have friends, family, or neighbors who might value a service like this,
be sure to invite them.
Christian Education
Great Cookie Walk is SUNDAY!
U Sale begins in fellowship hall immediately after worship.
U Cookies cost $6.50 per pound (still less than commercially produced
holiday cookies like Giant).
U One person may purchase one box at a time.
U All proceeds benefit the Santi School of Ramche, Nepal, and enable it to
become self-sustaining.
U Cash or checks (made payable to Catonsville Presbyterian Church with
a note on the check: Santi School.
Second Sunday children's worship ministry meets today. Following the
children's message, Kindergarten - Second Graders are invited to join Ellen
Fromm & Andrew Glennan for worship in the library, 10:50-11:30 a.m. They
will return to the sanctuary during the closing hymn. Child care for infants
- age 5 is available in the cribbery and Panda Rooms.
Youth Groups: Rising Stars middle school group heads out to the theater
tonight to see "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever." Meet in the small
Frederick Road parking lot at 6 p.m. to carpool. Prior rsvp's only, please.
Crossroads senior high group will volunteer at Our Daily Bread
on Wednesday, December 31. Meet in the small parking lot at 8:15 a.m. We'll
return by 2 p.m. Wear tennis shoes/closed toe shoes, jeans, tee shirts/long
sleeves, please. A box of tea bags would be an additional gift - thank you!
Gifts for McKim: Today is the last day to donate new, unwrapped toys for
this East Baltimore ministry. These will be distributed at the community
center's holiday party later this week. Many thanks for helping to make a
child's Christmas bright.
Cents-Ability: Help us help the hungry by adding to your penny banks each
and every meal through the month of December for the "Cents-ability 5 cents
a meal" program.
Advent Calendars and other resources for children, teens, and families are
available on the CE table in the education wing hallway. Please help
yourself. Looking for Stewardship activity books & pledge cards? They can be
found there as well.
Our annual Gift Collection for the McKim Community Center will continue
through December 14. Please help us provide gifts for children and teens in
this 100-year-old East Baltimore ministry. New, unwrapped gifts can be
placed in the bins in fellowship hall. Neat gift ideas: How about a
basketball or a board game? It's probably going to be a tough Christmas for
many of our neighbors; let's help make the season bright.
Rising Stars is going on a field trip to see The Best Christmas Pageant
Ever! on Sunday, December 14, at the Fells Point Theater, leaving from the
church at 6:00 p.m. Parents & families are invited too. Ticket prices are
approximately $11.50 per person. Beth Goldsby Allen will provide details.
Christmas Eve, December 24, 4 p.m. Family Worship Service.
1. Youth musician opportunities: There are two excellent ways to provide
music this year. First, if you already play an instrument, we hope you'll
sign up for a solo or duet (piano accompaniment available, if you need it);
second, we're forming a tone chime bell choir to present a Christmas piece
during worship (led by Dr. Greg Knauf). No prior experience needed. We'll be
rehearsing for that during the church school hour on Sunday, December 21,
and at 3 p.m. on December 24. Please let Dorothy Boulton know today of your
interest in either opportunity.
2. Youth narrators & liturgists are also needed. Do you have a clear,
friendly speaking voice? Are you comfortable speaking in front of a crowd?
Interested in communicating the Good News of God's amazing love? We need
your skills! Please see Dorothy today.
3. Our "Do-it-yourself Nativity" has become so popular we're going to do it
again. Please encourage your child to dress as one of the characters in the
Bible story, ex: Mary, Joseph, angels, sheep, cows . . . . Extra costumes
will be available in the sanctuary. A few volunteers are needed to help fit
and fold costumes. Please see Dorothy Boulton if you'd like to assist.
Adult Education: Sundays at 9 a.m. Child care is available.
Sing a Song of Bethlehem:
The Incarnation through the Music of the Church
December 14: We will see how the carols and hymns of the season have
actually distorted our hearing of the Christmas story. Bring a CD recording
of your most meaningful Christmas piece to share with the group. Led by Ken
Kovacs.
December 21: The focus will be on the angels' song in Luke 2, specifically
the Gloria and the many musical renderings of this experience. Led by Ken
Kovacs.
Outreach
Member Data Form: The Outreach Committee is working to update member
information. In November, we will be distributing a "Member Data Form." Our
database allows us to keep addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers but
this form also has room for you to list your children's names and ages and
your skills and areas of interest and knowledge. We would like emergency
contact information, too, just as a precaution in case an emergency does
occur.
Our goal is to keep accurate records and to have a talent bank. The talent
bank will be a reference to locate resources among the congregation when the
church needs specialized advice or assistance. Our members are blessed with
a variety of knowledge, skills, and talents. If you have questions please
call Cindy Bolognese, 410-247-4434.
The Outreach Committee will hand out the forms during Fellowship Hour on the
Sundays in November. Please make corrections as necessary and fill in any
blanks. There will be drop boxes at the back of the sanctuary and in
fellowship hall, or you may mail it to the church office, attention:
Outreach. We will be very discrete with your personal information. Thank you
for your help.

Presbytery of Baltimore Launches
New Stewardship Webpage
In the course of my work as Director of Development with the Presbytery of
Baltimore, I realized God had a greater plan for my life; and, through
financial guidance, I could help enrich the lives of those in need among us.
I also realized God provided the internet as a great tool for financially
securing the future of our church. With this in mind, the Presbytery has
redesigned the Stewardship page of its website to help congregations
understand that God provides us with tools to develop a spirit of generosity
? a faith journey that extends far beyond our generation.
When we create a lifetime financial plan, we are responding to how God has
blessed us in abundance. The Presbytery?s new Stewardship Webpage offers us
?giving? opportunities so that we may help others in need. The webpage also
highlights our Mission Funding Committee?s purpose and members; the
Financial Task Force, its purpose, members and outcomes; Mission Pledge
Statistics and the 2009 Mission Pledge Form; extensive Planned Giving
Information; Training; and, contacts for development assistance.
Faced with a recession, many of us think that we don?t have enough money for
ourselves, much less any to give to others. However, we must remember all
that we do is done in Jesus Christ?s name and in his honor. We celebrate
our Savior?s birth on December 25th and in His name we must remember with
our gifts, time and talent to help those who are homeless, hungry and less
fortunate.
If you have questions, suggestions or comments please give me a call at
410.433.2012, ext. 104 or email rturberville at baltimorepresbytery.org.
Yours in Christ,
Bob Turberville

We invite the congregation to join us in expressions of sympathy to the family and friends of Richard Byers. Mr. Byers died last night, at home, at the age of 95. A long-time member of this church, and a regular attender until recent years, Mr. Byers joined in 1925 and had memories of worshipping at the former church building on Frederick Road in downtown Catonsville (currently the Christadelphian congregation.) Plans will be made for a memorial service to be held here in the sanctuary. Known as a loving, kind, and generous man -- "Uncle Richard" -- please keep his nieces, Janet Byers and Katherine Campbell, and their extended families in your prayers.

"In the manger of my body
Leaps the tiny child,
And his breath is the word, the dance of God."
Poet, Kevin Crossley-Holland (b. 1941)
Lectionary Texts: Luke 1: 26-38 & Romans 16:25-27
Sermon: God's Glory - In the Flesh
What if a messenger of the Living God approached you and said that you would
bear the hope of the world in your body? What would you say if you
discovered that someone would be birthed with your DNA, through your
blood-line who would embody the power of the Most High? What if we
answered, not with "how can this be?" but with humility, allowing the
experience of God's glory, God's holiness come upon us, come over us,
overshadow and move us? It seems to me that this is the posture required
for such an experience, required for Advent. Instead of resisting the
holiness of God, what if we accepted it? What if we said with Mary, "Here I
am, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word."
See you in worship this Sunday!

practices. Session 1 will look at what the Bible teaches Christians about
worship and will explore the most common things found in worship spaces:
tables, altars, stained glass windows, pews, and pulpits. Session 2 will
look at worship practices and where they originated, such as the offering,
music, passing of the peace, and prayer. Led by Ken Kovacs and Kathy
Glennan.

?I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people.?
-Luke 2:10
For years, it seems, we have been living in fear. We have been coached to
fear a terrorist?s attack. And now, joining that fear, are concerns for
what is happening to our economy. We are afraid of the loss of financial
assets as well was our jobs. We are afraid that our budgets can not be
balanced and that cuts will be painful. We?ve reduced our traveling, eating
out, and purchases ? even in this season of Christmas. I suppose our living
in fear is nothing new ? it is only what we fear that has changed. When I
was young we were afraid that the communists would lob nuclear weapons at
us. For my parents it was Germany and Japan; and, before that, the despair
of the Depression.
Into a world that seems to be consumed by fear we hear this Word: ?the angel
said to us, ?Do not be afraid; for see?I am bringing you good news of great
joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a
Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord.? This is a message we need just as
much as did the shepherds tending their flocks by night some two thousand
years ago.
Our days ahead will be filled with last minute purchases, Christmas parties,
cookies and other preparations. For those of us in the Church, these
preparations include the final touches on Christmas Eve services: running
off programs, counting candles, orchestrating lights and music and a host of
other traditions. Why do we do this ? because we know the response of those
shepherds: ?Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken
place, which the Lord has made known to us.? And so we, too, will journey
to our particular Bethlehem, our churches, and make sure the doors are open,
the candles are lit, and the furnace is on ? because we want to welcome all
our fellow travelers who are coming to worship the incarnate God.
May each of you who read this find welcome this Wednesday evening and let us
return to our homes filled with love, hope, and joy. And may we sing with
confidence ?Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among
those whom God favors!? so that we will drown out the fears of this age.
Blessings,
Peter Nord

December 29??, 2008
A NEEDED PAUSE
Advent celebrates the coming of salvation in the birth of Christ and,
simultaneously, calls us to rejoice in the anticipated fulfillment of God's
reign of justice, love and peace.
By the time you read this, the throng of worshippers who crowded the pews on
Christmas Eve will have been replaced by the faithful remnant on the
?Sunday-after.? Christmas presents once scattered amidst the wrappings, are
now stowed away; guests have long departed for home; and, all the
decorative, holiday trappings will have diminished just a bit in their
brilliance.
Not much is happening in our churches during these twelve days of Christmas.
And, that may be all too well ? for, it is a time for a much needed pause.
More than most, this year has been both exciting and exhausting. We saw one
presumed political candidate set aside and witnessed the audacious power of
hope in the historical election of a new president. We took notice of the
steady decline in murders in Baltimore City; while, the death toll in
Mumbai, Gaza and the Sudan increased exponentially. We witnessed the world
economy descend to depths few people alive today have ever experienced; and,
we are filled with certain fear of how this will affect us personally,
professionally and spiritually within our churches.
Coupled with this fear is a certain hope that a new administration and ?past
experience? may usher in a recovery. It is in this moment of pause that we
may gain the perspective needed to replace our fear with hope. And so,
having been buffeted by the great storm of events in 2008, we find ourselves
in the midst of the Christmas season ? having rejoiced at the birth of
Christ and the incarnation of God in the world ? but still waiting for the
light of Epiphany to shine forth.
Will the advent of 2009 bring with it all that is promised? Well, that
depends. Many of us see ourselves as co-creators with God and stewards of
what has been entrusted to us. In large part it will depend upon whether or
not we take this seriously. Our economies, government, and churches will be
far more likely to thrive once again ? if we truly believe that Emmanuel ?
God with us ? was born yet again in our meager homes AND if we truly believe
in the Epiphany of the light of Christ, living and acting with an audacious
hope that comes when such belief are certain.
May you find renewal in this much needed pause. Blessings,
Peter Nord

wishes you a
