Men In and Out of the Church Pew
Across the Christian faith, many decry the paucity of men in the pews. More than 90 percent of American men believe in God and five out of six call themselves Christians. But only two out of six men - or, approximately 39 percent - attend church on a given Sunday.* Odds appear only slightly better within the Presbytery of Baltimore, where men compose 45 percent of the church's membership.
Still - pundits foreshadow an even more alarming trend which suggests 90 percent of boys raised in the church will abandon it by their 20th birthday.* Many will never return, failing to see any value in belonging to a church.
Since 1999, the Presbytery's Men (PM) program has fervently sought to enhance the role of lay-men in the church, nurturing them through a life-long commitment to Jesus Christ. Of the Presbytery's 72 churches, only 20 have active men's groups and even fewer are chartered, said David C. Hodge, the PM Moderator. However, in spite of those statistics, men throughout the Presbytery take an active role in church life and regularly participate in faith-based activities such as out-reach programs focused on housing, hunger, homelessness and care for the elderly and disabled. Scores of others serve on church committees and find time in their daily schedules to attend bible study, prayer meetings, fundraisers, Stephens Ministry, investment opportunities, educational field trips and various programs and social gatherings.
Among the active groups is an eclectic gathering of retired professionals and skilled laborers who convene Monday mornings for coffee at a Glen Burnie McDonald's. Known as the McDonald's Ministers, these men are often found huddled in a far-off booth plotting their attack against the insurgent growth of grass and shrubs surrounding Harundale Presbyterian Church in Northern Anne Arundel County. For more than a decade, they've joined in fellowship to share the tasks of trimming, repairing, painting, hauling, wiring, fixing and completing countless other handy tasks required to keep up the 60-year-old church - and, keep down overhead costs. Although the group varies from six to 20 men, their fellowship remains steadfast and has expanded to game nights and group dinners with spouses.
"The fun thing about it is the support for people and the fellowship," said Rob Thomson, a veteran member of the group. "Most of these guys would ordinarily sit home with nothing to do. Sometimes the thing that people need in their lives is something that's meaningful to do," he added, "and, the church is a good place to do just that."

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
________________________________________
Texts: Matthew 14:13-21; John 6:30-35
Message: Bread and Blessings
Preacher: Rev. Dorothy Boulton
Dear Friends:
In Sunday's text from the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus has just heard about the death of John the Baptist. He then got into a boat on the Sea of Galilee, hoping for some time apart to pray. But the crowds could see him along the shoreline. Walking alongshore and growing in number all day, the people were assembling. They were waiting for him. For Jesus, neither silence nor solitude was possible. That short time in the boat was all the rest he would get.
Yet Jesus landed the boat, went to the crowd, and got to work, moved by his compassion for them.
This week we are assembling together in fellowship hall around tables of hospitality, coming to Christ with our need. And Christ himself will feed us as we share the Lord's Supper together. We will take the bread and cup. We will be fed and sent to the next places of ministry. We will return to the work of witness to God's kingdom.
I hope you will join us for this sacred meal, for Christ himself invites you, "I am the Bread of Life." Come and be fed.
Looking forward to seeing you on Sunday,
Dorothy

A Glimpse Into Our Past
It was noted in the minutes of the Women's Auxiliary that "a meeting to unite the Woman's Missionary Society and the Women's Auxiliary into one organization" was held at the church on March 13, 1939. It was during this meeting that the name Women's Association of the Catonsville Presbyterian Church was chosen for the organization. Ten monthly meetings a year were planned, with circle leaders being in charge of nine and the officers in charge of the tenth. Each circle leader drew a slip to establish the month her circle was in charge of the general meeting. Slips with the names of the women of the church were then drawn by the circle leaders to determine the members of each circle.

Sermon: The Water's Nice..Right?
Preacher: Elder Keith Glennan
Jesus told Peter to conquer his fears and climb out of the "safety" of the storm-tossed boat. (Matthew 14:29) Despite Jesus' command, Peter's fear almost overcame his trust. Many of us face these same fears in our lives. Come join us in worship this Sunday and explore how we can learn from Peter's experience.
See you in worship - (we'll be back in the sanctuary) -

Summer worship time is 9:30 am
LOVE bade me welcome; yet my soul drew back,
Guilty of dust and sin.
But quick-eyed Love, observing me grow slack
From my first entrance in,
Drew nearer to me, sweetly questioning
If I lack'd anything.
"A guest," I answer'd, "worthy to be here:"
Love said, "You shall be he."
"I, the unkind, ungrateful? Ah my dear,
I cannot look on Thee."
Love took my hand and smiling did reply,
"Who made the eyes but I?"
"Truth, Lord; but I have marr'd them: let my shame
Go where it doth deserve."
"And know you not," says Love,
"Who bore the blame?"
"My dear, then I will serve."
"You must sit down," says Love,
"and taste my meat."
So I did sit and eat.
George Herbert,

PRESBYTERY HELPS FORGE PUBLIC POLICY ON SWEAT-FREE PURCHASING
It began with you. The vote at a November 2007 Stated Meeting of the Presbytery of Baltimore not to purchase, with tax-payers dollars, apparel manufactured in sweatshops has become a national rallying cry. It is the beginning of a wave of justice that will reverberate throughout the world.
As a result of that meeting last year, an overture on Sweat-free Purchasing by government entities was passed by the Presbytery of Baltimore and sent on to the General Assembly. Overture #08-17 was then passed by the Mission Coordination and Budgets committee of the GA by a vote of 59 to 1 and was sent on to full consideration by the General Assembly floor. On Thursday, June 26th the overture entitled "On Responsible Purchasing" was passed by the PCUSA General Assembly and put into action. With that action, the PCUSA became the first faith-based organization to endorse the Sweat-free Consortium, a coalition of local and state governments joining together to pool their considerable buying power to purchase only apparel that is not manufactured at home or overseas in a sweatshop environment.
On July 12th, I was asked to join other national organizations to speak at an event at the National Governor's Conference in Philadelphia. Hundreds of workers and supporters gathered to lobby the Governors to join the Sweat-free Consortium. While there, Governor Edward Rendell of Pennsylvania announced that his state would become the first to join the consortium, already millions of dollars strong through local participation.
The Sweat-Free movement has spread to our state, as well. A bill was introduced to the House sub-committee in Annapolis last session - surprisingly - received good support from legislators; although, the bill was retracted at the last minute by its sponsors to provide legislators an opportunity to learn more about workers who are forced to labor in adverse conditions in the clothing manufacturing industry.
This year we plan to re-introduce the bill to stronger support and are confident in its passage. Governor O'Malley's office has been in contact with the Sweat-free Consortium to begin talks regarding Maryland's participation. Please join the Presbytery of Baltimore as we gather in Annapolis next spring to advocate for Sweat Free government apparel purchasing in Maryland.
Thank you,
Deb Milcarek

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Jesus and the Syrophoenician Woman
_______________________
Texts: Psalm 133, Matthew 15:21-28
"This isn't about tolerance - essentially, living and letting live. Mere toleration of differences can be a wonderful alternative to mayhem. But it is not a stopping point in human relations. It does little to educate people about one another. That's an activity that demands a greater, more committed effort."
--Gustav Niebuhr, Beyond Tolerance
Sermon: Bread Lessons
Preacher: Rev. Dorothy L. Boulton
Come and join us as we wander into the region of Tyre and Sidon, the Riviera of its day, as we meet Jesus and his disciples in what must be one of the most perplexing stories in the gospels. Why is Jesus so harsh and offensive to this Canaanite woman? Where is the compassionate Jesus we have come to know and expect?
Given the reality of ongoing wars and major conflicts, we will probe this story for the insight it gives us into Christ and his understanding of his own mission. What can we learn about our own perspective of "the other" in the context of faith? How do we put that faith into action?
Lots of questions for us this week! Let's ponder them together.
See you in worship,
Dorothy

Update on Backpacks for Success
Many thanks to all who gave so generously to the Backpacks for Success school supply drive. We exceeded our commitment to provide six complete backpacks as we donated six complete elementary school backpacks and three complete middle/high school backpacks. In addition, we collected a large box of school supplies which will be joined with other churches' donations to make other full backpacks. The backpacks and supplies were given to the Catonsville Emergency Assistance Network (CEAN) to help families of Baltimore County who are facing financial difficulties this upcoming school year. This campaign is a local mission supported by the Board of Deacons. -Tina Pritchard
A Glimpse Into Our Past
At a congregational meeting on February 3, 1959, (almost 50 years ago) these urgent needs, as determined by the Church Building Committee, were given: 1) a new kitchen, 2) a new organ, 3) a new manse, 4) a new church school building, and 5) a parking lot. How many of these "urgent needs" have been met?
Our glimpses so far this year have been taken from a book by Mrs. Walter Knipp, History of the Catonsville Presbyterian Church 1880-1955. This book will continue to be our source of information through August.

The kingdom of love is coming because:
Somewhere someone is kind when others are unkind,
Somewhere someone shares with another in need,
Somewhere someone refuses to hate, while others hate,
Somewhere someone is patient - and waits in love,
Somewhere someone returns good for evil,
Somewhere someone serves another, in love,
Somewhere someone is calm in a storm,
Somewhere someone is loving everybody.
Is that someone you?

A REASON TO GIVE
?The reconciliation of man through Jesus Christ makes it plain that
enslaving poverty in a world of abundance is an intolerable violation of
God?s good creation. Because Jesus identified himself with the needy and
exploited, the cause of the world?s poor is the cause of his disciples.?
The Confession of 1967
(9:46)
Development is just another word for fundraising. Raising money for
whatever the cause can be a noble and worthy effort for the fundraiser. But
we must remember the purpose of Christian fundraising: that giving is not
for the glory of man; it is for the glory of God. Many religious
contributions, as well as contributions for other causes, are given so that
the giver?s name can be inscribed on a plaque. Much of the hardware within
church houses across our nation are inscribed with the name of the donor ?
thus, inscribed as contributions unto the glory of man! I Samuel 4:21 ?
?the glory of the Lord has departed!?
When we make a Christian gift, we have good intentions but we sometimes make
gifts for our own glory and not for the glory of God. The Stewardship
Training conducted in July and August highlighted the belief that we should
give for the glory of God and not for the glory of a Christian congregation
or any individual recognition. We cannot say, ?This church is successful
because it has met its budget.? The basis of the need of the giver is to
give for his or her own spiritual benefit rather than on the basis of the
church?s need to balance its budget.
We also must realize that stewardship is part of our worship of God, rather
than a fundraising procedure. Many times a person will give because that?s
what is expected of them as a responsible member of a congregation. It may
even be perceived that to be a ?guilt-free? member of the church one must
contribute to the annual stewardship drive, the capital campaign or some
other eleemosynary aspect of the church.
Giving is part of our individual worship of God. And, for that reason, we
must make Christian giving part of our Christian living experience.

________________________________________
Texts: Psalm 130 & Luke 5: 1-11
"Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch." Jesus
(Luke 5:4)
Message: De Profundis: Out of the Depths
Preacher: Rev. Dr. Kenneth E. Kovacs
Dear Friends:
Looking forward to being back in the pulpit this Sunday and hearing all that
you've been up to the last couple of months.
I selected this text from Luke 5, as a way to start sharing what I've been
up to the last four months, what the sabbatical experience was like for me,
what I discovered and rediscovered.
The two quotes from Tillich and Hollis complement the point Jesus is trying
to make to his disciples. It is truly amazing (and probably overwhelming)
to admit all that we're capable of experiencing and accomplishing when we
risk going out into deep water, particularly the depths of our souls. The
depths is the place where we come face-to-face with ourselves, but also come
face-to-face with God, the source of every abundance.
It seems to me that this is what Jesus has in mind when we're invited to
follow him - go deep. What do you think?
Looking forward to seeing you this Sunday!
Grace and peace,
Ken

The Stuff God is Putting Together
Eternal God, our days and years are in your hand. Our accomplishments are
fleeting, and what we build is temporary. We pray that what we begin here
today will rise to give you glory, standing firm on the foundations of
apostles and prophets, with Jesus Christ himself as the cornerstone.
The Book of Occasional Services [Geneva Press, 1999]
by The Rev. Gradye Parsons,
Stated Clerk of the General Assembly of PC(U.S.A.)
One of my favorite books, How Buildings Learn by Stewart Brand, is about
what happens to buildings after they are built. We tend to look at
buildings as static objects with a utilitarian future. Brand argues that
good buildings are those that adapt to new uses, different inhabitants and
changing customs. Buildings that can adapt and are indigenous to the local
culture usually survive and thrive.
Brand gives particular praise to structures built during the 1930s by the
New Deal programs ? Civilian Conservation Corp, Public Works Administration
and Works Project Agency. These programs provided work for millions of
people who lost their income during the Depression. They found help and hope
while constructing some of our favorite structures.
In Ephesians 2, Paul uses the metaphor of a building to describe the way God
is constructing the church. It is built on a foundation of the saints and
apostles, with Christ as the cornerstone. This construction of God?s has two
great goals. One is to transform you and me from strangers and aliens into
members of God?s household. The second is for the whole structure to grow
together into a holy temple in the Lord, a dwelling place for God.
The church that God is building is not a specific structure. Most of the
time it is not even visible. Sometimes we get a glimpse when we see bread
broken, a cup of water offered or the face of an 88-year-old church member
light up. But, seen or unseen, we should never doubt that this church is
being built and that we are the materials.
We are the stuff God is putting together to build God?s church.

Texts: Isaiah 40: 21-31 & 1 Corinthians 9: 24-27
Message: Running for More than Celery
Preacher: Rev. Dr. Kenneth E. Kovacs
Looking at the texts from Isaiah and Paul's letter to the Corinthians, one
can see the theme for this sermon is about running. There was actually an
Olympic track in Paul's day not far from Corinth. But given the odd title
for a sermon, I'm reluctant to say more about it this week, other than to
ask: for what are you running?
Looking forward to seeing you this Sunday!
Grace and peace,
Ken

in the refrigerator during the worship service. Volunteers are also needed
for moving tables & chairs, preparing food/grilling, cleaning up - the usual
suspects.
Please sign up in fellowship hall to help make this annual event a
success.
This is always lots of fun, so we look forward to seeing you there -
let's have a great time together!

four-month sabbatical. He will share some of the highlights (including
images). The journey will begin in the deserts of New Mexico among
Benedictine monks, Gregorian chant at 4 a.m., and a pile of rocks. (A fuller
presentation will be scheduled for a Sunday evening in October. Watch for
date and time.)
September 14 and 21 (France Rm) - Hospitality: Loving The
Stranger
Hospitality is a theme most Christians take very seriously. How do we
welcome strangers in our community? Do we welcome outsiders? What are our
obligations to strangers? Do guests also have obligations to hosts?
Session 1 will explore the basic principles of the ancient
practice of hospitality, analyze both positive and negative examples of the
observance in the Hebrew Bible, and look at ancient and contemporary
theological questions associated with this social phenomenon.
Session 2 will investigate New Testament and other early
Christian writing for evidence of Christian hospitality and look at possible
implications of such a practice by contemporary disciples of Jesus Christ.
Led by Kathy Glennan.
Mission
Auction Items Needed for Homeless Shelter Benefit: Lazarus Caucus, the local
faith-based non-profit organization that helps support Baltimore County's
Westside Shelter, is hosting their 5th Annual Silent Auction & Dinner on
October 3 at Rolling Road Golf Club. Last year's event provided the homeless
with clothing, food, shelter, job training, transportation assistance, and
medical/mental health/substance abuse treatment. With the housing and credit
crisis, this year's needs are even greater. Silent auction donations are
needed in any of the following categories: vacation home/timeshare
donations, restaurant gift certificates, wellness and/or beauty related
services; car care products or services; tickets or related merchandise in
music, sports, entertainment; gift certificates or items related to family
fun activities (including kids' camps or activities); home improvement
related services or merchandise; electronics.
If you have connections to folks involved with any of the above items
or services, please consider using your network to assist those who have
almost nothing and for whom these tough times present an enormous challenge.
Please contact Brian Koches, Auction Committee chair, if you are able to
help: brian.koches at jacobs.com or 571-213-2287.

is some lemonade, cookies, and some set-up and clean-up time. If you have
any questions, please contact Connie Renner for further information. Thank
you for helping us meet and greet one another each Sunday.

renovated facility, contact the Home at 410-823-4622.
Breaking Down Barriers
On Sunday, September 28, at 3:30 p.m., Second Presbyterian Church will host
a dialogue designed to promote understanding and compassion between Muslims
and Christians: How Is God Revealed to Humankind?
This event comes at a time when tension and suspicion have mounted between
the two groups because of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and turmoil in
the Middle East. The dialogue will feature Dr. Daniel L. Migliore of
Princeton Theological Seminary and Imam Yahya Hendi of Georgetown
University. The event is open to the public and will be held in the church's
sanctuary, 4200 St. Paul Street. There is a flyer on the bulletin board in
