Karl Mattison, a Development Officer for the Presbyterian Foundation, will offer participants key components to unlock the mysteries of developing a solid planned giving program. Mr. Mattison will focus on retirement plans, bequests, charitable gift annuities and other ways congregants can leave an imprint on plans for their church. In an afternoon session, Gene Musser, President of Kirby-Smith Associates, will teach participants how to promote a spiritually-based Annual Stewardship Drive. And Robert Hallett, President of TLC Ministries, will offer sound solutions on managing a capital campaign and cultivating responsive stewardship disciples within your congregation. The Stewardship Workshop promises innovative strategies on church fundraising - including, some unique approaches used by members of our own presbytery. Rev. John Schmidt of Central Presbyterian Church and Rev. Cherry Marshall of Hope Presbyterian Church will explain how their churches make the annual Stewardship Drive fun and rewarding for all. The Stewardship Workshop on Saturday, March 10th will be packed with great information and Christian-based tools - just in time to help your church plan a successful Stewardship, Capital Campaign or Planned Giving program next fall. The workshop begins at 10am at First Presbyterian Church of Howard County, 325 Presbyterian Circle in Columbia (on the southeast side of the intersection of Rt. 108 and Rt. 29). For more than four months, a dedicated group of members have studied Anthony Robinson?s extremely insightful and highly relevant book, Transforming Congregational Culture, written to help mainline churches (like our own) understand the massive cultural changes we have experienced over the last forty years. These changes pose a considerable challenge, but also an amazing opportunity for the church to discover anew what Christ is calling us to be and become. What does Christ desire for the church? Connie Renner Nooks and Crannies Has your group stuck some stuff in a closet or seldom used room? Have you forgotten about it; do you still need it? Does anyone even know which group?the stuff belongs to? It is time for some major clearing out of spaces. As our current storage is rather inefficient and much consolidation is needed, this is an opportunity to make an evaluation and reorganization and to clear out unneeded items. As we proceed with renovations of our buildings, some locations are already committed, and some space will need to be used for displaced items. Several rooms on the balcony level will disappear as they will be utilized for air-conditioning mechanical equipment. One room will need to be cleared out to provide an on-site office for the construction superintendent (this saves us money). On the main floor, the pantry space will be converted into a handicapped accessible restroom. A new stairway will impact the stage, drastically reducing the current storage area underneath. There will be tremendous pressure for storage space in the rooms by the kitchen. We have also notified the Child Care Center that they will need to consolidate their things. The trustees are already working on clearing out the pantry. As a separate undertaking, the Boy Scouts are clearing out under the sanctuary stairs and are putting in new shelves for their use. This spring cleaning and emptying of the nooks and crannies needs to occur as soon as possible. Items can be contributed to the Strawberry Festival (June 7) white elephant sale tables; a location will be designated for these donations. We have many groups and organizations that use our facilities. A cleanup and exchange day to consolidate materials that might be used by outside groups is scheduled for Saturday, May 3 (or May 17). Susan Hutton has agreed to coordinate the storage process. If storage is a necessity for your group, that information needs to be reported, and you will be assigned a designated space. You must let Susan know even if you don't think your current storage space is affected. Thanks to everyone for helping with this important step as we?launch the construction phase of the renovations. Do you enjoy decorating and arranging your home? How would you like to help prepare God's house for worship on Sunday mornings? If you're interested, please contact Laurie White. If you can only help out occasionally or are interested in one aspect of the job, that's fine, we are flexible. The more people we have helping out, the less of a commitment it is on everyone. Call Laurie at 410-747-0317 or catch her in fellowship hall. Moment of Grace and Gratitude Members of the congregation are invited to share their Moments of Grace and Gratitude -- times when they have felt particularly blessed by the ministry of Catonsville Presbyterian Church. Elder Doug Lambdin is offering the first of what we hope will be many offerings of thanksgiving submitted by our members. Please contact Doug if you have a Moment to share. When my father became ill and died in November, our loved ones and closest friends rallied around my family and me, offering unending love and support. Moreover, we were comforted and aided greatly by the prayers, well-wishes, personal time given, shoulders leaned on, and meals delivered to us by the wonderful people of this church community. Sadly, it isn?t until a time like this one that we realize we?re not just members of a church to show up on Sunday and help fill a pew; we?ve become, gratefully, a part of an extended family. The people of this church, we find, are valued as a part of our circle of loved ones and friends with whom we now share our joys, our sufferings, our milestones, and our pitfalls, and with whom we will forever have woven in the fabric of our memories. My family doesn?t just live in a house in Catonsville; we also live in the family of Catonsville Presbyterian Church. Doug Lambdin A Glimpse Into Our Past A reminder that all the information in our retrospectives so far this year have been taken from a book by Mrs. Walter Knipp, History of the Catonsville Presbyterian Church: 1880-1955. Mrs. Knipp was a very active member of CPC and the first woman elder in the Baltimore Presbytery (ordained in 1931). This book will continue to be our source of information through August. During Rev. Nesbitt?s pastorate, there was a very active Women?s Auxiliary. After being relieved of its first duties of ?paying the coal bills, and paying and directing the sexton,? it accomplished many other important things including suggesting the use of individual communion cups instead of the silver flagon (and providing for these in 1912); paying bills for repairs on the manse; providing flowers for church services; furnishing choir robes; cooking and serving meals for several church organizations; and, on special occasions, hosting parties for underprivileged children and giving clothes to Baltimore missions. Spring Fling The Presbyterian Home of Maryland will celebrate 125 years of service to the community on Saturday, May 10. There will fun for the whole family with vendors, activities, food, silent auction, and more. Rain or shine. 10:00 a.m. ? 3:00 p.m. The Home is located at 400 Georgia Court in Towson. Yard Sale Dickey Memorial Presbyterian Church at 5112 Wetheredsville Road is having a church and community yard sale on Saturday, May 10, from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 to raise funds for a mission trip to Gulfport, MS, for Hurricane Katrina relief. Hebron Presbyterian Church last Saturday. It was this congregation that made the very first donation to the Presbytery?s 5? A Meal campaign; and, its members, Kathleen Boytim and Janice Yant, continue to lead the way in our mission to combat hunger in our communities. We are grateful to all who have responded so generously since the 5? A Meal campaign began months ago. No sooner had the Hunger Program received funds, it answered a call for help from Trinity Presbyterian Church in West Baltimore. For 21 years, a dedicated group of volunteers ? now, under the leadership of Nancy Bennett and Camilla Martin ? has operated a food pantry twice a month in the community of Walbrook. However, their endurance and amazing commitment to serve those in need were, most recently, strained by the growing number of families coming to their door for assistance. In order to open the doors of the food pantry one more day per month, Trinity needed additional funds to purchase food. The Hunger Program was able to immediately respond to the church?s request only because of the contributions made by Mt. Hebron. This story is a microcosm of what we hope the 5? A Meal will become: neighbors partnering with neighbors in response to the call of the Holy Spirit. Please encourage your congregations to pray and worship in constant remembrance of those in need ? so that all may be united to work more effectively to end hunger.
